MILA: An Innovative Approach to Identifying AI-Generated Content Using BERT, CNN, and BiLSTM

    Utku, Anil

AI ethical principles are essential in balancing the social impacts of rapidly developing technology today. The widespread use of AI technologies has heightened the need for ethical and legal regulations in this area. In this process, fundamental principles such as data privacy, accountability, transparency, and human oversight take center stage to enhance the reliability of artificial intelligence and foster social trust. Generative AI refers to machines producing text, images, audio, and video content. However, generative AI brings ethical discussions since it can produce original content. Detecting AI-generated content is becoming increasingly complex due to the ability of AI models to produce increasingly more fluent and meaningful texts. This study created a hybrid MILA model using BERT, CNN, and BiLSTM models to detect AI-generated content. MILA was compared in detail with SVM, XGBoost, CNN, LSTM, and BiLSTM using sentence-level and article-level datasets. Experiments demonstrated that MILA outperformed the compared models, achieving 94.34% accuracy at the sentence-level and 93.62% accuracy at the article-level.

Preparation of Nanographene-Based Copolymer Nanocomposites: Thermal Decomposition Kinetic, Optical, and Electrical Behaviors

    Barim, Esra; Demirelli, Kadir

The poly(4-methacryloyloxyphenyl-4'-methoxystyryl ketone-co-methyl methacrylate) [P(MPMESK0.25-co-MMA)] was synthesized using a free radical copolymerization method at 60 °C. The composition of the copolymer was estimated by 1H-NMR. The nanocomposites of P(MPMESK0.25-co-MMA)-loaded 9 and 11 wt% nanographene (NG) were produced using the ultrasonic homogenizer sonicator. The FT-IR, 1H-NMR, GPC, TGA, XRD, and SEM techniques were used to characterize the copolymer and composites. The thermal behavior of P(MPMESK0.25-co-MMA) partially heated up to 270, 310, 340, and 380 °C was investigated by FT-IR analysis. A six-membered anhydride ring in the copolymer backbone formed at 340 °C and higher temperatures. TG measurements were used to analyze the thermal decomposition processes of pure P(MPMESK0.25-co-MMA) and P(MPMESK0.25-co-MMA)/NG 11 wt% composite. Apparent activation energies for thermal decomposition of P(MPMESK0.25-co-MMA)/NG 11 wt% were determined using the Flynn–Wall–Ozawa (FWO) and Kissinger–Akahira–Sunose (KAS) methods at a temperature range of 200 and 400 °C for a weight loss of approximately 70%. The average activation energies determined from the FWO and KAS methods were 86.3 and 80.3 kJ/mol, respectively. The dielectric and electrical behaviors of the P(MPMESK0.25-co-MMA) and P(MPMESK0.25-co-MMA)/NG 11 wt% composite were investigated at room temperature. The dc activation energy for dc conductivity of nanocomposite was calculated as 1.092 eV. Optical properties such as absorption, reflectance, refractive index, absorption edge, direct band gap of the copolymer, and composites were investigated from their optical examinations in the wavelength region of 200–800 nm. It was found that the optical energy gap values had shifted to the lower energies with the doping of NG.

Comparative Study of Enzymatic and Oxidative Polymerization of a Benzothiazole-Based Schiff Base and Its Antibacterial Properties

Kaya, İsmet; Solmaz, Adnan; Abuawad, Mohammed Majed Shible

In this study, the Schiff base 1-(((6-nitrobenzo[d]thiazol-2-yl) imino)methyl)naphthalen-2-ol (NBTIMN) was synthesized and subsequently polymerized by two different methods. Oxidative polymerization in the presence of organic (o-(NBTIMN)-O) and aqueous alkaline media (o-(NBTIMN)-A) was one of the techniques. The other was enzyme-catalyzed oxidative polymerization (o-(NBTIMN)-E), which was conducted at room temperature with hydrogen peroxide and the enzyme horse radish peroxidase (HRP). The structures of the obtained oligomers were characterized using FT-IR, 1H-13C-NMR, UV–Vis, CV, and GPC analyses, and their electrochemical and optical band gaps were determined as 2.68, 2.66, and 2.49 eV, and 3.08, 2.90, and 3.07 eV for o-(NBTIMN)-O, o-(NBTIMN)-A, and o-(NBTIMN)-E, respectively. Thermal analyses demonstrated that the o-(NBTIMN)-O and o-(NBTIMN)-A derivatives exhibited enhanced thermal stability, characterized by higher decomposition temperatures and LOI values. SEM analyses revealed distinct differences in surface morphologies depending on the polymerization conditions. Antibacterial assays showed that o-(NBTIMN)-O exhibited the strongest broad-spectrum inhibition, whereas NBTIMN displayed pronounced activity against S. aureus. In contrast, o-(NBTIMN)-A and o-(NBTIMN)-E were found to be inactive. These results highlight the critical influence of polymerization conditions on both the physicochemical characteristics and the biological activities of the synthesized structures. Importantly, the comparative design of enzymatic and chemical polymerization demonstrates the potential for environmentally friendly synthesis strategies. The distinct electrochemical and thermal properties suggest applicability in electronics and sensor-related fields, while the pronounced antibacterial activity of o-(NBTIMN)-O holds promise for biomedical and antimicrobial applications.

Analyzing Failures In Wind–Solar Hybrid Energy Systems Using a Fuzzy-Based BWM-MARCOS Approach: Challenges and Solutions

Başhan, Veysi; Yucesan, Melih; Demirel, Hakan; Gul, Muhammet

The reliability of hybrid renewable energy systems (HRES) depends heavily on the identification and management of potential failure modes. This study employs a fuzzy-based BWM-MARCOS approach to systematically analyze and prioritize failure modes within wind–solar hybrid systems. The model aims to prioritize the failures considering four important risk parameters: (1) severity of the failure on system, staff, and failure, (2) failure occurrence chance, (3) effort and ease of detecting the cause of the failure, and (4) economic impact of the failure. In this context, four key risk indicators were evaluated to rank failures, revealing that SP1 (cell damage), ESS1 (battery degradation), and WT11 (battery fire) are the most critical due to their potential impact on system operations. Sensitivity analysis confirmed the stability of these rankings under varying parameter weights. Additionally, cross-method validation using fuzzy TOPSIS, SAW, and MARCOS demonstrated high correlation coefficients, underscoring the reliability of the results. Tailored mitigation strategies, including advanced diagnostics, durable materials, and robust monitoring systems, are proposed to address these critical failures. While the current methodology applies to various HRES configurations, future research should incorporate real-world operational data and machine learning techniques to enhance predictive capabilities and dynamic risk management.

A Novel Secure S-box Design Methodology Based on FPGA and SHA-256 Hash Algorithm for Block Cipher Algorithms

Aydin, Yilmaz; Garipcan, Ali Murat; Özkaynak, Fatih

In this study, a novel robust design methodology that successfully meets the performance and security criteria for substitution-boxes (s-boxes), critical component in block cipher systems, is proposed. Unlike traditional methods providing low-level randomness, the proposed method utilizes physical true randomness as the entropy source, significantly improving the robustness and effectiveness of the s-box design. Phase noise (jitter) occurring on ring oscillators (ROs) is used for true randomness inputs with high security and unpredictability properties in the proposed method. The success of the proposed method is evaluated by considering key performance metrics of s-boxes such as bijectivity, strict avalanche criterion (SAC), bit independence criterion (BIC), nonlinearity (NL), and differential probability (DP). In the novel method, including the integration of the secure hashing algorithm (SHA)-256 hash function for cryptographic usage adequacy of the noise signal, 106.75 NL, 0.4995 SAC, and 105.7 average BIC-NL values can be obtained for s-boxes without any additional optimization process. Considering the low DP value, the analysis results confirm that the s-boxes produced by the proposed method can provide remarkable resistance against linear and differential cryptanalysis scenarios. Numerical findings also show that the proposed s-boxes are competitive and superior compared to other s-box designs in the literature. In conclusion, we believe that the methodology producing robust and reliable s-box solutions for block cipher systems contains important contributions inspiring future research regarding design principles.

The Effects of Changing the Effective Crest Length of Labyrinth Side Weir on Discharge Capacity

    Dogan, Yusuf; Kaya, Nihat

Labyrinth side weirs have significant advantages according to conventional side weirs in terms of discharge capacity. Labyrinth side weirs are especially advantageous in places where more discharge is required from small weir openings lengths. The most significant feature of labyrinth side weirs is their effective crest length, which enables them to discharge more flow. In this study, the situation where the discharge capacity is decreased due to the narrowing of the crest length of the labyrinth side weir for any reason was experimentally investigated in detail. It was also considered that the potential narrowing could be in the upstream weir crest length. The overflow from the remaining length of the crest was enabled by the 1/3, 2/3, and 3/3 closure of the upstream crest length of the labyrinth side weir. Therefore, it was attempted to determine the decrease in discharge capacity due to the narrowing in the effective crest length. The values of the discharge coefficient were obtained by using the De Marchi approach. The study was conducted for subcritical flow regimes and steady-state flow conditions. A total of 980 experimental runs were conducted in this study. As the length of upstream effective crest length of the triangular labyrinth side weir at the straight channel decreases, the discharge coefficient also decreases. By narrowing the length of effective upstream crest length in 1/3, 2/3, and 3/3 ratios, the total discharge capacity decreased by approximately 10%, 23%, and 48%, respectively.

Assessment of Seismic Behavior Factor of Code-Designed Steel–Concrete Composite Buildings

    Etli, Serkan; Güneyisi, Esra Mete

In this study, the seismic behavior factor of steel–concrete composite buildings was examined. For this purpose, 5-, 10-, 15- and 20-story composite moment-resisting frame (CMRF) buildings having concrete-filled steel tube columns and composite beams were designed at medium ductility (DCM) and high ductility (DCH) levels as per the regulations of Eurocode 8. Examined DCM structures were designed for a PGA of 0.2 g while DCH structures were designed for a PGA of 0.4 g. SeismoStruct software was utilized in the design and performance assessment of the case study structures. Nonlinear static pushover and incremental dynamic analyses were used. In the pushover analysis, the uniform and triangular load distributions were adopted while 12 earthquake ground motions were employed in the dynamic analysis. The effect of ductility levels and number of stories on the seismic behavior of CMRFs was studied using the results of the nonlinear analysis. To this, the variation in the lateral response, global yielding value, code-based behavior factor and component, and dynamic behavior factor were presented for CMRF structures with DCM and DCH. It was observed that the behavior factor of all CMRFs exhibited well above the design assumptions, especially DCM class CMRFs.
