Kismet, Yilmaz; Dogan, Akar; Wagner, Manfred H.
In this study, three different electrostatic powder coating wastes of thermoset structure were used as fillers for low-density polyethylene (LDPE). The mechanical, thermal, and morphological properties of these composites materials are reported. The thermoset powder coating wastes were hydrolyzed using water and alcohol, and then 10%, 20%, and 30% by weight of the deactivated wastes were mixed with LDPE, first in a mechanical dry mixer, and subsequently homogenized by melt compounding in an extruder at about 160 °C. Standard tensile test bars and plate-shaped samples were produced from these homogeneous compounds by injection molding. The effects of adding hydrolyzed powder coating wastes on the properties of LDPE were determined by mechanical, thermal, and morphological tests. Tensile strength and perforation threshold of the sample filled with powder coating wastes decreased to some extent compared to un-filled sample. However, an increase in izod impact and bending strengths has been observed. The results of this investigation demonstrate that powder coating wastes with thermoset structure can be used as fillers in LDPE.

Kismet, Yilmaz; Wagner, Manfred H.
The present study investigates the individual effects of three different thermosetting waste materials, used as fillers, on the mechanical, thermal and flow properties of acetal copolymers (POM). Different amounts ranging from 5% to 30% by weight of hydrolyzed powder coating recyclates were mixed as filler material in POM. The matrix and the fillers were first dry-mixed and then compounds were prepared through melt extrusion. The resulting compounds were cooled, granulated, and then standard tensile test bars were produced through use of an injection-molding machine. We investigated the mechanical and thermal properties of test specimens, and tensile strength, bending strength and impact strength were evaluated as a function of type and amount of filler material in the POM matrix. In addition, the change in melt flow index of POM/filler mixtures was determined, before and after extrusion. Furthermore, the morphology of the specimens was examined via electron microscopy. The results of this investigation are encouraging and present an innovative approach to reutilize hydrolyzed electrostatic powder coating wastes with thermoset structures as fillers in acetal copolymers.

The interest of additive manufacturing with 3D printing increases day by day, which provides improved mechanical, electrical, magnetic and thermal properties of 3D parts. The production of 3D parts with the stereolithography (SLA) method, which allows it to be produced with high precision, resolution and complex geometries, distinguishes itself from other alternative additive manufacturing methods (FDM. SLS. LOM. LMD etc.). However, studies on the preparation of functional 3D polymer nanocomposites with the SLA method are quite limited. This study aims to produce silver (Ag) and/or copper (Cu) based 3D polymer nanocomposites for enhancing its mechanical strength, thermal stability and electrical conductivity. Mono and bimetallic (Cu/Ag) nanoparticles have been in-situ synthesized by selective irradiation of laser beam method using a commercial SLA device. In this method, metal (Cu/Ag) acrylate containing photocurable resin is not only cured but also leads to thermal decomposition of metal ions into nanoparticles to form functional 3D structures. The mechanical, electrical and thermal properties of polymer nanocomposites are characterized in detail. As a result of the analysis, the nanoparticles, with an average diameter of 25–55 nm, are well dispersed in the polymer matrix without agglomeration. The temperature at which 5% weight loss of Ag and Cu based polymer structures is measured as 179.3 °C while the glass transition temperature is found to be 223.81 °C. Most importantly, the resistance values are significantly decreased from 456.62 GΩ (Gigaohm) to 1.50 GΩ by increasing the amount of Ag addition at 3D polymeric structures. Therefore, this study allows the production of polymer nanocomposites not only in complex structures but also in desired properties especially for electrically conductive materials, capacitors and electronic applications.

- MakaleYalnız künye2019Scopus SJRQ1Fabrication, characterization of poly(MA-co-NIPA)-graphene composites and optimization the dielectric properties using the response surface method (RSM)
Torğut, Gülben
Poly(Maleic anhydride-N-isopropyl acrylamide poly(MA-co-NIPA) copolymer was synthesized by Free radical polymerization method. Response surface methodology (RSM) was used for optimizing the dielectric constant (έ) and dielectric loss factor (ε՛՛). The aim of this study is to determine the quantitative relationship between selected parameters (frequency, applied voltage and graphene content) at room temperature. The importance of process parameters in the model is assessed by analysis of variance (ANOVA) investigation. Our results show that, with increasing the frequency the έ and ε՛՛ of the polymers decreases, whereas voltage has no significant effect on έ and ε՛՛ of the composites. With the incorporation of graphene into poly(MA-co-NIPA) the έ and ε՛՛ considerably increased by 244% and 387% respectively. The model predicted the maximum value of the έ (13) when the frequency was set at 4506, the voltage was set at 1.45, and the graphene content was set at 14.97 wt%. Also, the RSM indicated that maximum ε՛՛ (1969) was achieved at the frequency of 512, at the voltage of 20.44, and at the graphene content of 14.76 wt%. The morphology of composites was investigated by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). SEM results demonstrated that the poly(MA-co-NIPA)-graphene composites has interconnected and they form different morphologies with the increase of GNs content. ATR tests showed that no significant change in chemical bond and crystallization is found in composites.
