In this study, an effective cation exchanger was developed from the pine cone by citric acid modification and its hardness removal properties from the waters were investigated. For this purpose, ground pine cone samples were subjected to a citric acid modification following NaOH saponification. Both of the raw (RPC) and modified pine cone (MPC) samples were subjected to standardized hardness removal tests by shaking with hard waters. These tests showed that citric acid modification significantly increases the cation exchange capacity of the pine cone. Most suitable size fraction of pine cone was determined as -16 + 30 mesh (600 mu m < x < 1200 mu m). Also, citric acid modified product obtained from this fraction was used in a continuous system to remove hardness from water. The results of this study showed that the MPC can be used for hardness removal from waters as a cheap, durable and environment -friendly material. Finally, regeneration experiments showed that the MPC can be used for hardness removal from water repeatedly by a simple HCl regeneration. (C) 2015 Taiwan Institute of Chemical Engineers. In this study, firstly, sugar beet bagasse (ŞPK) was treated with sodium hydroxide solution andsecondly, saponified sugar beet bagasse obtained from first stage was modified with formaldehyde. Themodified product from sugar beet bagasse with formaldehyde (ŞPKF) was used for removal of basic red46 (BK46) from aqueous solution. The effective dose for removal was found to be 2 g/L. At 25 °C, 100mL of 0.5 mM concentration solution of BK46 with 2 g/L of ŞPKF was contacted in batch containersfor 360 minutes and it was determined that 80.8% of BK46 was removed under these conditions. Furthermore, the effects of pH and sorbent dose on removal of BK46 were investigated. Thesorption capacities data that obtained against time were applied pseudo-first-order, pseudo-second- order, Elovich, intra-particle diffusion, modified Freundlich ve Banghman kinetic models and the bestkinetic model for BK46 removal was determined to be the pseudo second order kinetic model. TheBK46 solutions that a range from 0.10 mmol/L to 2.50 mmol/L of initial concentration were contactedwith 2 g/L dose of sorbent and equilibrium data were obtained. These equilibrium data were analyzedby using Langmuir, Freundlich, Dubinin-Radushkevich, Frumkin, Temkin ve Elovich isotherms and itwas determined that best-fit models for data are Langmuir and Dubinin-Radushkevich isotherms
