  İklim Krizinin Medyada Ele Alınışı: Akademik Eğilimlerin ve Çalışmaların Bibliyografik Analizi

  Bu çalışma, 2000-2023 yılları arasındaki 23 yıllık süreçte Türkiye’de iklim değişikliğine dair medyada yer alan haberleri ve söylemleri ele alan akademik çalışmaları analiz etmektedir. İklim krizi, günümüzde en büyük çevresel tehditlerden biri olarak kabul edilmekte olup, Türkiye de bu etkileri derinden hissetmektedir. Bu bağlamda medya, farkındalık yaratma ve bilgilendirme konusunda kritik bir rol oynamaktadır. Özellikle de medyanın kitleselliği ve kitlelere ulaşma hızı göz önüne alındığında iklim değişikliğinin farklı sonuçları ile medyada yer alıp almadığı, nasıl ve ne kadar yer aldığı kamuoyunun bilinçlenmesinde, kamusal baskı oluşmasında, konunun politik mecralarda tartışılmasında etkilidir. Aynı şekilde iklim değişikliğinin toplum, çevre, nüfus, ekonomi ve benzerine etkilerinin bilimsel olarak tartışılması, akademik kamuoyunda paylaşılması da, politika yapıcıların, sivil toplum örgütlerinin konuya dikkatlerinin akademik düzeyde çekilmesinde önemlidir. Bu çalışmanın amacı iklim değişikliğinin yarattığı sonuçların medyada yer alma biçimlerini sorunsallaştıran akademik metinleri analiz etmektir. Böylelikle iklim değişikliğinin medyada (televizyon, online/basılı gazeteler, sosyal medya, kitaplar, reklamlar, filmler, diziler vb.) nasıl ele alındığını sorunsallaştıran bilimsel çalışmalar bibliyografik olarak analiz edilerek iletişim çalışmaları alanındaki akademik ilginin haritası çıkarılacak ve saptamalarda bulunulacaktır.

  Academic Freedom in Turkey: TSSA Congresses and Talking on Disadvantaged Groups

  Academic milieus such as symposia, congresses and conferences may be analyzed as places where the traces of academic freedom can be tracked. Such an analysis can be carried out through determination of whether the proceedings of these events include studies on disadvantaged groups that focus on class-based, ethnic, religious and sexual discrimination by moving beyond the hegemonic discourse and the dominant paradigm. Within this scope, the current study has two main areas of focus: the first is an analysis of whether and in what context the problems faced by the disadvantaged groups have been discussed in the Turkish Social Sciences Association’s (TSSA) biannual congresses held during the rule of the Justice and Development Party (JDP); and the second is an evaluation of academics that offer a critical perspective on "sensitive" issues. To this end, the current paper, starting from the TSSA congress held in 2001 - a year before the JDP seized power- and including the congresses held in 2003 and 2005, offers a general evaluation of the congresses. In the second part, the paper addresses the congresses held in 2009, 2011, 2013 and 2015, which can be defined as a more liberal period of the JDP rule, coinciding with efforts towards a peaceful resolution to Armenian, Alawite and Kurdish questions. Finally, the paper offers an analysis of the last congress held in 2017 under the state of emergency that saw replacement of a liberal outlook of the government with straightforward pressure on dissent. A total of six congresses have therefore been analyzed with regard to the program content, the proceedings, and ways of handling the issues that relate to Kurds, Armenians, Alawites, women and children.

  Reflecting upon Ourselves through National Press Within the Framework of the visit of Pope Benedict XVI: Tolerant and Civilised Muslims, Admirable Turks *

  This study focuses on the handling of the visit of Pope Benedict XVI to Turkey in 2006 in the three best-selling newspapers of the period (Zaman, Hürriyet, Posta). Negative remarks of the Pope with regard to Islam and Turkey s membership to EU prior to his visit turned this visit into a struggle with a particular emphasis on the atrocity between us and them. Based upon the literature on the relationship between national press and nationalism, this study focuses on how the press constructs the image of us and them through certain discursive strategies. One of the findings of the study is that despite their different understandings with regard to publishing, the three newspapers handled Pope s visit as a tool of consolidation by reconstructing the "image of us" as Muslim Turks. The press emloyed the main strategies of denying one s own negative aspects and defamation of the other. For instance, the fact that Turkish politicians and bureaucrats addressed the Pope as "Mr. Pope" by ignoring his political and religious titles was regarded positively, whereas a particular emphasis was put on the "individuality" of the violence against religious minorities in Turkey stating that such acts were personal actions of the perpetrators. That Islam is a religion of "peace and reason" and that Muslims are tolerant people were frequently repeated in the news stories dealing with the visit, while Christianity was portrayed within the framework of the conflicts between Catholicism, Protestantism and Orthodoxy. In addition to that, an admirable and lovable image of Turks was constructed in the news stories through the "changing views" of the Pope. One of the striking findings of the study is the dramatic change in the language used in the news stories about the Pope. While the Pope was defamed in the news stories prior to his visit because of his negative remarks about Turkishness and Islam, he was portrayed moderately and positively due to his statements and behaviours praising the "image of us" during his visit.
