Effect of Source Parameter Variability on RVT-Based Site Response Analysis: A Case Study for the Aegean Region of Türkiye

    Icen, Abdullah

This study investigates the influence of source parameter variability specifically stress drop and anelastic attenuation on site response analysis using the Random Vibration Theory (RVT) framework. Site amplifications were computed for a representative site in the Aegean region of Türkiye using four different source parameter sets based on regional literature. A single set of randomized Vs profiles was used to account for subsurface variability, while varying source models enabled the evaluation of epistemic uncertainty in site amplification. The epistemic uncertainty associated with source parameters, expressed as τsource, peaks at approximately 0.04 s, reflecting the sensitivity of high-frequency site response to stress drop and attenuation. The study provides a regionally calibrated quantification of source-parameter-driven epistemic uncertainty for the Aegean region. The findings emphasize the need to account for source-related uncertainty in seismic hazard assessment. Unlike most previous RVT-based studies, this work explicitly isolates and quantifies the effect of stress drop and attenuation on site amplification, highlighting a novel contributor to epistemic uncertainty. Future work should incorporate Monte Carlo simulation of source parameters to support PSHA applications.

Comparative Analysis of the Seismic Risk of Tunceli-Ovacık Rural Building Stock Using Different Rapid Screening Methods

    Polat, Berivan Yılmazer; Ayhan, Ezgi

Located at the intersection of the Yedisu Segment, a seismic gap, and the active Ovacık Fault, the Tunceli-Ovacık district is a region with a high earthquake risk but an unclear level of structural fragility. This study aims to assess the seismic safety of the rural building stock located in a seismically critical area. To this end, the Turkish Rapid Visual Screening (RVS), based on local parameters, and the Canadian Seismic Survey Method, widely used in international literature, were applied to determine the current condition of the buildings; the earthquake risk of the region was analyzed based on the results obtained. Furthermore, similarities and differences between the methods were comparatively examined to ensure scientific integrity. Within the scope of the study, 209 buildings representing the building typology in the region, 88% of which are masonry-mixed systems, were analyzed using both rapid assessment algorithms. While the overall risk distribution ratios were similar, building-level matching analyses showed a medium level of agreement between the methods. This indicates that the local and universal methods, rather than definitively verifying each other, provide complementary data by focusing on different parameters in the seismic assessment of the rural building stock. This study demonstrates that an integrated risk mapping approach, where different methodologies complement each other, can offer a rapid and reliable decision support mechanism for urban transformation strategies in cities with high earthquake risk, such as Tunceli.

Security and Performance-Based Design and Evaluation Criteria for Cryptographic Random Number Generators

    Erdem, Ebubekir; Garipcan, Ali Murat

This study comprehensively examines security and performance-oriented selection and evaluation criteria for Random Number Generators (RNGs) used in cryptographic applications. The study analyzes the fundamental differences between Pseudo Random Number Generators (PRNGs) and True Random Number Generators (TRNGs). Within the scope of these analyses, entropy sources, statistical characteristics, and performance metrics, as well as their effects on security, are evaluated. The ability of TRNGs to meet high security requirements thanks to their hardware-dependent structures is compared with PRNGs, which offer software-based and low-cost solutions. The study evaluates various criteria ranging from minimum entropy tests to space and energy requirements. It also highlights the fundamental challenges encountered in the design and implementation of RNGs in cryptographic systems. Additionally, the fundamental security requirements encountered in RNG design and how these requirements can be met in practice are discussed in detail. In this context, PRNGs, TRNGs based on physical processes, and hybrid RNG designs are analyzed. The advantages and disadvantages of these different design paradigms are then presented in a comparative manner. In conclusion, this study delivers a framework that unifies security, performance, and design considerations for RNGs, setting a benchmark for future cryptographic research. As a result, this framework forms the foundation for the next generation of secure, efficient, and scalable cryptographic systems.

Regional Variations in the Physical and Rheological Properties of Asphalt Binders Recovered from Earthquake-Damaged Roads Following the February 6, 2023 Türkiye Earthquakes

    Furtana, Beyza

This study investigates the physical and rheological properties of asphalt binders recovered from earthquake damaged road sections in Hatay, Kahramanmaras, Gaziantep, and Malatya following the February 6, 2023, earthquakes in southern Türkiye (Mw = 7.8 and Mw = 7.5). Asphalt mixture samples were collected from severely deteriorated pavements, and bitumen was extracted through solvent extraction and rotary evaporation. The recovered binders were subjected to penetration, softening point, rotational viscosity, and Dynamic Shear Rheometer (DSR) tests to evaluate aging, stiffness, high-temperature performance, and viscoelastic behavior. Results revealed significant regional differences: Hatay binders exhibited the lowest penetration, highest softening point, highest viscosity, and the greatest rutting resistance (high G*/sinδ values) while maintaining lower phase angles, indicating enhanced stiffness and elasticity. In contrast, Kahramanmaras binders showed the highest penetration, lowest softening point, and lower viscosity, combined with high phase angles, reflecting a softer, more viscous character with reduced deformation resistance. Malatya and Gaziantep binders displayed intermediate characteristics, with Malatya showing moderate stiffness and Gaziantep retaining greater flexibility. Across all samples, viscosity decreased markedly with increasing temperature, and rutting resistance diminished at higher service temperatures; however, binders with higher initial G*/sinδ values retained better performance. The findings highlight the influence of regional seismic intensity, climatic conditions, and pavement history on binder behavior and emphasize the need for region-specific maintenance and rehabilitation strategies in post-disaster pavement management.

Evaluation of Susurluk Basin Flows Using Trend Analysis Methods

    Acar, Ramazan

Trend analysis of annual average flow data is very important for better water resources management, planning and operation. In this study, annual average flow data from M. Kemal Paşa, Orhaneli and Simav flow observation stations located in Susurluk Basin were tested with Mann-Kendall, Spearman Rho and Şen's Innovative trend methods and the trends of the stations were tried to be determined and the performances of these methods were evaluated. In addition, annual average flow data were submitted to regression analysis, yielding equation sets. For each station, the annual and 100-year changes in m3/s were determined. Analyzing the results, only Şen's Innovative Trend Method analysis found a general decreasing trend for all 3 stations. In the analyses of Mann-Kendall and Spearman’s Rho methods, no trend was detected in all 3 stations. In addition, 100-year percentage change values of the data of 3 stations were determined. According to these values, it is concluded that there will be a significant decrease in the flow values of the stations in the future.

Effect of Ground Diatomite on Early Strength of Self-Compacting Mortars

Karabulut, Büşra; Yon, Merve Sahin; Karataş, Mehmet

Portland cement fabrication is a significant factor that increases the amount of carbon dioxide released into nature. For this reason, it is very important to use natural and waste materials with pozzolanic properties instead of portland cement. In this article, the usability of diatomite rock, a natural pozzolanic material that can be substituted with portland cement, in the manufacture of self-compacting mortar was studied. In the experimental study, prismatic specimens with dimensions of 40 × 40 × 160 mm were used to examine the impact of ground diatomite on the early age mechanical properties of self-compacting mortar; it was produced by replacing 0%, 5%, 10%, 15%, 20% of diatomite with portland cement, respectively. The slump-flow test to obtain self-compacting mortar was conducted according to the European Federation of Specialized Construction Chemicals and Concrete Systems guidance. Specimens prepared using 0%, 5%, 10%, 15% and 20% diatomite were cured in water at 23±2 ̊C temperature for 3 days. 3-day (early age) flexural and compressive strength worths were gained for the samples whose curing period was completed. As a result of this experimental study, it was specified that the highest strengths were in the series containing 5% diatomite, exceeding the reference samples. Additionally, it has been determined that mechanical strength decreases when the diatomite ratio in mixtures is more than 5%.
