In this study, the removal efficiencies were evaluated based on key environmental parameters such as chemical oxygen demand (COD), Total Organic Carbon (TOC), Total Nitrogen (TN), and Total Phosphorus (TP), using P. chrysosporium white rot fungus to treat synthetically prepared domestic wastewater. The research aimed to assess the suitability of bioremediation results with respect to the Urban Wastewater Treatment Regulation. The experiment was carried out over a span of 11th days, employing static 1/1 and 1/5, as well as dynamic 1/1 and 1/5 dilution ratios. The outcomes revealed varying removal efficiencies, with the highest rates observed at dynamic conditions and a 1/5 dilution ratio: 84% for COD, 81% for TOC, 73% for TN, and 56% for TP. Conversely, the lowest removal efficiencies were determined under static 1/1 conditions, reaching 48% for COD, 33% for TOC, 31% for TN, and 45% for TP. Based on the results, it is evident that P. chrysosporium exhibited effective bioremediation capabilities on synthetic domestic wastewater within a reasonable 11th day period. Furthermore, the results aligned with the specified limit values outlined in the Urban Wastewater Treatment Regulation. Consequently, the study highlights the efficacy of P. chrysosporium as a valuable species for biological treatment stages in urban wastewater management

Consumers’ Preferences for Drinking Water in Istanbul City

Erguven, Gokhan Onder; Kanat, Gurdal; Erguven, Gozde

Water is an indispensable resource for living things to survive. In addition to its direct consumption, water is also used in the preparation of foods necessary for eating and drinking. Therefore, it is extremely important that the water used is drinkable, healthy and safe. The aim of this study is to determine the place of network water as drinking water in consumer preferences. In accordance this purpose, an online questionnaire was prepared with 274 participants from different age groups, including students from Yıldız Technical University (YTU) Department of Environmental Engineering and their relatives and neighbours, including different ages and occupational groups. With this questionnaire, the factors affecting their water preferences and water usage profiles were determined. As a result of the survey, 54.1% of the participants use carboy water, 33.8% use pet bottle water, 12.1% use network water. The criteria that consumers pay attention to in their water preferences are taste, smell, color, cleanliness and the amount of mineral substances in the water, respectively. The reasons for preferring the carboy water, which is preferred by the majority, are that they find the carboy water cleaner and safer and that it tastes better. On the other hand, participants who preferred tap water stated that 33.3% of them preferred this water because its clean and reliable properties, 33.3% of it was affordable and 22.2% of it was easily accessible. When the degree of trust in the network water was questioned, 12.2% of the participants said that they found the network water safe, 40.5% did not find it safe and 47.3% said they were not sure. In addition, when the participants ranked carboy water, pet bottle water and network water according to the degree of reliability, the network water was found to be reliable with a large rate of 89.2%. 35.1% of the respondents stated that they would prefer to drink tap water if the Water Administration periodically discloses their water quality reports and indicates that the network water is clean enough.

Bioremediation Performance of Sphingomonas melonis and Bacillus\rmuralis on Herbicide Diquot Dipremide-(ethylene-d4)

Erguven, Gokhan Onder; Yildirim, Numan; Koçak, Emel; Durmus, Mehmet Harun Bogacbarbaros; Aydin, Ekrem

Bioremediation is a process that utilizes the degradation potential of microorganism to provide a cost-effective and reliable\rapproach for pesticide biodegradation. For this purpose, chosen bacteria Sphingomonas melonis and Bacillus muralis were isolated\rfrom an agricultural soil sample. The biodegradation performance of these isolated bacteria at different Diquot Dipremide-\r(ethylene-d4) (DDE4) herbicide concentrations (250, 500 and 1000 ppm) was investigated under submerged culture conditions.\rBiodegradation performance of isolated bacteria was monitored with COD, TOC and, BOD5 reduction rates in culture medium at\rdifferent incubation periods. According to the results; S. melonis has the highest bioremediation capacity for COD removal (91%\rat 250 ppm). For TOC, B. muralis has the highest removal rate as 82% at 250 ppm. On the other hand, For BOD5 at 250 ppm 85%\rS. melonis showed the best removal performance. Most effective removal rate at 250 ppm concentrations was obtained as 91%\rand 88 by S. melonis and B. muralis respectively at the end of the 216th hour for COD. Additionally, the increase in turbidity\rrelated with population dynamics at the end of the 216 th hour positively effected the bioremediation parameters included COD,\rTOC and BOD5 reductions. These results showed that it can be used for effective COD, TOC and BOD5 removal in S. melonis and\rB. muralis on DDE4 remediation

The Effect of Gadolinium and Lanthanum on the Mortality ofDaphnia magna

Korkmaz, Volkan; Ergüven, Gökhan Önder; Yildirim, Numan; Cıkcıoğlu Yıldırım, Nuran

Rare earth elements (REEs) have been recently identified as emergent contaminants because of their numerous and increasingapplications in technology. The impact of REEs on downstream ecosystems, notably aquatic organisms, is of particular concern, but has to date been largely overlooked. The purpose of this study were to generate toxicological information regarding thesepoorly studied Gadolinium and Lanthanum elements to determine the current risk associated with these elements. The results of this work indicate notable D. magna mortality in high concentration of La and Gd. The highest mortality rate was determined as100% at 100 mg/L concentration for both La and Gd at the end of the 24hour . At the end of the 48 hours, the highest mortalityrate for both La and Gd was observed at 100 mg/L concentration. No mortality was determined at 48 hours at a concentration of10 mg/l Gd. 100% mortality was observed for two elements at 50 and 100 mg/L concentrations at 72 hours. in the natural living water no death was seen in this time period. The findings from our study also indicate that Gd is more toxic than La. Due to thismortality effect of La and Gd to D. magna, it will be important for the ensuring continuity of the ecosystem to monitor especiallyaquatic environments and to treat them with appropriate treatment methods from contaminated environments.
