Experimental and numerical analysis of ceramic fiber geopolymer concrete under blast effect

Dalğıç, Aras; Yılmazer Polat, Berivan; Savaş, Sedat

This study employs both experimental and numerical methods to investigate the blast resistance of ceramic fiber-reinforced geopolymer concrete (CFGC), a cement-free material often referred to as green concrete due to its environmentally friendly nature compared to Portland cement concrete (PCC). Geopolymer concrete specimens, formulated with ground granulated blast furnace slag, silica fume, and varying proportions of ceramic fibers, were subjected to blast tests using 50, 100, 150, 200, and 250 grams of trinitroglycerin (TNG). A standard PCC specimen was utilized as a control. The results demonstrate that the incorporation of 10% ceramic fibers significantly enhances the blast resistance of the geopolymer concrete, reducing crater diameters by up to 20% compared to conventional PCC. Furthermore, the finite element model developed in ANSYS Workbench exhibits a strong correlation with the experimental data, validating the predictive capability of the numerical simulations. Overall, this research highlights the immense potential of CFGC as a sustainable, highly durable alternative for structures exposed to blast loads.

The Behavior of Ceramic Fiber Geopolymer Concrete under the Effect of High Temperature

    Dalğıç, Aras; Yılmazer Polat, Berivan

Geopolymer concrete (GC), also known as green concrete, contains slag, silica fume, and fly ash as binders. The absence of cement in concrete is critical to protect the world from the environmental impacts of cement production. In addition, exposure to high temperatures is a critical parameter that causes loss of strength in concrete. In this study, Geopolymer concrete samples were prepared with 10 different samples containing different proportions of slag, silica fume, and porous ash and subjected to various physical, mechanical, and optical tests. The sample (GS90) with optimum workability and compressive strength, which also showed high performance in water absorption, freeze-thaw, and UPV tests, was used in high-temperature tests. Portland cement concrete (PCC) was used as a control sample. This study investigated the effect of high temperatures on the physical and mechanical properties of fiber-free GCs containing 2%, 5%, and 10% by volume of ceramic fibers. Therefore, fiber-reinforced, fiber-free, and PCC specimens were subjected to high-temperature tests at 100, 300, 600, and 900 °C. As a result of the observation of crack growth, color changes, and compressive strength parameters in the samples subjected to high-temperature tests, the thermal resistance of the 10% ceramic fiber geopolymer concrete sample was 2.5% higher than other samples. There is no study in the literature that examines the behavior of ceramic fiber-reinforced geopolymer concrete at high temperatures. This research revealed an important finding by proving that ceramic fiber reinforcement increases the compressive strength of geopolymer concretes at a remarkable rate after high-temperature impact.

Anti-tank impact absorption with a reinforced concrete plate design

Polat, Berivan Yilmazer; Savaş, Sedat; Polat, Alper

Anti-tank weapons are among the infantry weapons used by the armies of many countries. Anti-tank rockets and explosives such as TNT, generally used for armour piercing, are also frequently used in terrorist attacks. These attacks damage the protection facilities built from reinforced concrete. Rockets or similar explosives’ rapid speed and burst temperatures pierce reinforced concrete during strikes, resulting in casualties and damage to crucial strategic structures. This study aimed to devise an economic and applicable reinforced concrete plate that could absorb the impact of anti-tank rockets and Trinitrotoluene (TNT) type explosives. Therefore, 5 different samples, produced from C50 reinforced concrete and 150×150 cm in size, were formed by combining plates of different numbers and thicknesses. Also, a sample, which was a single thick plate, was prepared. In destructive testing, Rocket Propelled Grenade (RPG-7) was used as the anti-tank rocket launcher. As a result of this study, the impact damage was reduced with hollow concrete plate geometries, and recommendations were developed for complete prevention.

Deterioration analysis of historical village house structure in Mersin Kanlıdivane archaeological area by UAV method

    Karataş, Lale; Dal, Murat

The village house located in the Mersin Kanlıdivane archaeological site is one of the oldest settlements in the ruins, built in the second century. The house is mainly built of a yellowish beige limestone. This stone, which is the main material of the building, shows many deterioration patterns today. The aim of the study is to determine the dominant deterioration pattern of the stones in the village house structure in the Mersin Kanlıdivane archaeological site and to investigate the source of the deterioration. In order to investigate the deterioration patterns in the structure, the images obtained by UAV photogrammetry were interpreted and the types of deterioration were mapped. In the study, it is seen that even the types of material problems based on the smallest detail can be determined based on virtual visual inspection, thanks to UAV photogrammetry, without observing the structure in situ with UAV photogrammetry. The findings obtained in the study shows that the color change and surface loss deterioration on the stone surfaces has reached advanced levels as a result of the structure's exposure to the strong climate-induced sun and water effects for centuries. The results of the study show that the main damage observed on the stone surface of the structure is caused by the erosion by the effect of water. Restoration methods should be tried to stabilize the deterioration and replace the most degraded stones. It is recommended to use water-repellent surface coatings to protect the natural stone, especially against the intense water effect in the building.

The influence of microwave curing on the strength of silica fume-added fly ash-based geopolymer mortars

    Yilmazer Polat, Berivan

Geopolymer concretes a substitute for traditional Portland cement as a more environmentally sustainable alternative. In addition, one of the most significant advantages of geopolymer concrete is the high setting speed that can be achieved with thermal curing, that is, the short curing period. Research on geopolymer concrete has focused on curing, where curing is usually done with conventional ovens. Microwave curing initiates heat generation at the molecular level, which results in a minimal heat increase on the surface of the specimens compared to traditional thermal curing methods. In addition, it provides internal, rapid, and homogeneous heating and rapid strength development. This study is based on research that examined the effect of microwave cure on the compressive strength of silica füme-modified geopolymer mortar. In the study, sodium silicate and sodium hydroxide were used for activation, and first of all, fly ash substituted geopolymer mortar specimens were subjected to conventional thermal curing in an oven. On the other hand, the mortar specimens with the same composition were subjected to short-duration (10 minutes) microwave curing at power levels of between 200-600 W. When the results were compared regarding compressive strength, void and per-cent water absorption, UPV, and SEM-internal structure examination, it was revealed that microwave curing could be used faster than the conventional oven curing method in silica füme-added fly ash-based geopolymer mortars. This research can be considered an essential step for further optimizing and popularising geopolymer concrete and microwave curing and proposes a method that should be considered in the future development of more sustainable construction materials.

Pleistocene Glaciations in Karadag, Western Taurus Mountains, Turkey

Bayrakdar, Cihan; Çilgin, Zeynel; Saris, Faize

Karadag is one of the mountains subjected to the Pleistocene glaciations in the Teke Peninsula (Western Taurus) along with Beydaglari, Akdag, and Sandiras Mountains. Karadag, which reaches 2418 m summit at a 30 km straight distance from the northeast of Fethiye Bay, has many peaks over 2300 m. There are plenty of glacial researches and dating studies aim to reveal Pleistocene glaciation chronology of the mountains such as Sandiras and Akdag in the Teke Peninsula. On the other hand, glaciations in Beydaglari were mentioned superficially and in general terms. Lastly, there has not been known any glaciation phenomenon in Karadag, in other words there are not any studies concerning the glaciation on the mountain. However, Karadag has distinctive cirques and moraines on the slopes of high elevations near the peak. In this study, we identified glacial valleys, cirques developed in different sizes and aspects and lastly frontal and hummocky moraines in front of these cirques. They are descending to the elevation of 1800 m. With this study, a new glacial area was identified in Turkey and made a contribution to the glaciation inventory of Turkey. This study aims to reveal the geomorphological and climatological characteristics of this area with regard to tectonic, climatic and karstic characteristics during Pleistocene. Maps and relevant outputs were created and analyzed by geographic information systems using the spatial data obtained from the field studies, unmanned aerial vehicles and meteorological stations.
