Oxidative polycondensation of phenylhydrazine-based Schiff base: structural, thermal, optical and dielectric investigations

Kaya, İsmet; Bayır, Erdal; Solmaz, Adnan

In this study, the Schiff base 3-((2-phenylhydrazono)methyl)benzene-1,2-diol (3-PHMB) was synthesized through a condensation reaction between 2,3-dihydroxybenzaldehyde (2,3-DHBA) and phenylhydrazine (PH). The obtained Schiff base was subsequently subjected to oxidative polymerization in a 10% KOH (w/v) aqueous medium using hydrogen peroxide (35% H₂O₂), sodium hypochlorite (6–14% NaOCl), and oxygen (O₂) as oxidants, yielding the oligomers o-(3-PHMB)-P, o-(3-PHMB)-H, and o-(3-PHMB)-O. The structural, morphological, thermal, optical, and electrochemical characteristics of the synthesized compounds were comprehensively investigated using FT-IR, NMR, SEM, TG-DTA, UV-Vis, CV, and GPC techniques. UV-Vis and CV analyses revealed that the optical band gaps (Eg) were 2.33 eV for 3-PHMB, 2.06 eV for o-(3-PHMB)-P, 2.16 eV for o-(3-PHMB)-H, and 2.02 eV for o-(3-PHMB)-O, while the electrochemical band gaps (Eg′) were calculated as 2.03 eV, 1.65 eV, 1.63 eV, and 1.50 eV, respectively. Thermal analysis showed that the char yields at 1000 °C were 41.43% for o-(3-PHMB)-P, 38.72% for o-(3-PHMB)-H, and 44.35% for o-(3-PHMB)-O. Dielectric measurements indicated that o-(3-PHMB)-O exhibited higher polarization capacity and energy storage ability compared to the other oligomers. Moreover, the electrical conductivity values increased steadily with frequency; at 100 kHz, the conductivity was recorded as 1.74 × 10⁻⁵ S cm⁻¹ for o-(3-PHMB)-O and 1.64 × 10⁻⁵ S cm⁻¹ for o-(3-PHMB)-P. These findings demonstrate that the synthesized Schiff base oligomers are promising candidates for dielectric and optoelectronic applications due to their high thermal stability, controlled molecular weight distribution, and semiconducting properties.

Enhanced impedance, electrical conductivity, dielectric properties for colloidal starch-g-poly (methyl methacrylate) supported with semiconductor cadmium sulfide

    Torğut, Gülben; Gürler, Nedim

In this study, starch-graft-poly (methyl methacrylate) (starch-g-PMMA) composites doped with different amounts (5, 10, and 15 wt%) of cadmium sulfide (CdS) particles were fabricated for electrical measurements using in-situ polymerization technique. The structural characterization of the samples was studied. The dielectric and conductivity properties of the composites were investigated using impedance analyzer depending on the frequency (100 Hz–20 kHz) at room temperature. Spectroscopy revealed that the dielectric constant (ε′), dielectric loss (ε′′), and real (Z) components of impedance are found to decrease with increasing frequency for both starch-g-PMMA and starch-g-PMMA (5, 10, and 15 wt%) composites. On the contrary, the AC conductivity (σac) of samples increased with increasing frequency. In addition, ε′ and ε′′ values of starch-g-PMMA were lower than composites that added CdS. When the CdS content increased from 0 to 15%, ε′ increased from 5.62 to 15.10 at 100 Hz. AC conductivity was improved after adding the CdS particles. The maximum conductivity value for starch-g-PMMA15%CdS is found to be 3.07 × 10–7 at 100 Hz. When the dielectric properties of composites are evaluated, it is concluded that it is an exciting material for electronic applications in technology.

Photoresponse, thermal and electrical behaviors of MXene-based polysulfone nanocomposite

Demirelli, Kadir; Barim, Esra; Çelik, Aytekin; Yegin, Mustafa; Aksoy, Yunus; Hanay, Özge; Hasar, Halil

The Ti3C2Tx MXene nanosheet was prepared by 40% (v/v) hydrofluoric acid etching at 20 °C for 48 h and delamination of bulk MAX Ti3AlC2 precursor material. A 2D nanomaterial MXene Ti3C2Tx as a nanofiller was introduced to polysulfone (PSulfone) matrix. MXene and PSulfone/MXene nanocomposite systems were characterized by X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscope, Fourier-transform infrared and thermogravimetric analysis instruments. Dielectric and electrical characterization of PSulfone/MXene nanocomposite was carried out. The electrical resistance of Ti3C2Tx MXene from measurement current (I)–voltage (V) was measured as 116 Ω. Pure PSulfone matrix exhibits typical insulator behavior, and MXene exhibits a good conductor behavior. But, when MXene was added to the pure PSulfone matrix, the resistance of the MXene/PSulfone nanocomposite increased moderately compared to that of pure MXene. In spite of the excess of surface functional groups, MXene showed surprisingly good electron transport across the surface, while in the case of PSulfone/MXene nanocomposite, the insulating behavior of PSulfone significantly reduced the electron transport of MXene. The semiconductor behavior of PSulfone/Ti3C2Tx MXene nanocomposite indicates that MXene provides efficient charge carrier transfer in the nanocomposite system. By comparing the TGA results between the PSulfone and different weight ratios of PSulfone/Ti3C2Tx MXene nanocomposites, it was determined that MXene nanosheets had a significant effect in slightly accelerating the thermal degradation of PSulfone. Optical conductivity was investigated by preparing a film of PSulfone/MXene nanocomposite on an interdigital contact. It was observed that the optical current values changed depending on the increasing illumination intensity. Considering current–voltage measurements, the photocurrent generation potential of PSulfone/MXene nanocomposite shows that it can be used in photodevice production.

Physical and shielding properties of Er2O3 rare earth oxide compound content on PCL/PEG blend

Taşgin, Yahya; Pekdemir, Mustafa Ersin; Yilmaz, Mücahit; Kanca, Muhammed Sait; Kök, Mediha

Rare earth elements (RRE), due to their unique magnetic, electrical, and optical properties, are an important group of elements demanded in many application areas from machine technology to the health industry. In this study, new composites were obtained by mixing Erbium oxide (Er2O3), one of the rare earth element oxides, into PCL–PEG blend, which is also an important material group, in different ratios. The characteristic functional groups of the obtained polymer blend/Er2O3 nanocomposites were determined by the ATR-IR, and as the erbium oxide ratio increased, characteristic peaks of the polymers in the blend as well as characteristic signals of the Er–O–Er bond were found. When the thermal behavior of the obtained composites was examined, it was observed that the polymer blend exhibited miscible blend properties and the melting temperature of the polymer blend increased as the Er2O3 ratio increased. In addition, it was determined that the thermal stability of the composite increased significantly. X-ray measurements of composites at room temperature support other measurement results. It was determined that the presence of Er-RRE oxide increased the crystal structure feature in the polymer blend composite. Gamma radiation shielding capabilities of polymer materials containing different erbium ratios were investigated by calculating shielding parameters such as half value layer (HVL), radiation protection efficiency (RPE), and mean free path (MFP). Cs-137 and Co-60 radioactive sources were used as gamma sources. According to the obtained measurement results, Erbium oxide increased the absorption property of the polymer composite material. Synthesis and characterization of N-(2-acetyl benzofuran-3-yl) methacryl amide and ethyl methacrylate copolymer/graphite oxide composites and study of their kinetic and electrical properties

Demirelli, Kadir; Barım, Esra; Tuncer, Hülya; Barım, Gamze; Abubakar, Abdullahi Musa

Copolymers of N-(2-acetylbenzofuran-3-yl) methacrylamide (BFMAA) and ethyl methacrylate (EMA) were prepared by radical copolymerization. The composition of copolymers was estimated by 1H-NMR spectroscopy. The composites of P(BFMAA39-co-EMA) [COP1] and P(BFMAA15-co-EMA) [COP2] loaded 18 wt% graphite oxide (GO) were prepared utilizing Ultrasonic Homogenizer Sonicator Processor. The FT-IR, DSC, TGA and SEM techniques were used in the characterization of the copolymers and composites. The thermal degradation behavior of COP1 was investigated by FT-IR studies of the partially degraded copolymer. And, this copolymer was able to form a four-member amide ring and imidization via intramolecular while being heated above 340 °C. Dynamic TG analysis under argon gas was used to investigate the thermal decomposition processes of pure COP1 and COP1/GO. Two degradation models including the Flynn–Wall–Ozawa and Kissinger–Akahira–Sunose methods were used to determine the apparent activation energy of the copolymer and its composite for approximately 65% of thermal decomposition occurred between 200 and 400 °C. The results also showed that average activation energy between 111.69 and 134.25 kJ/mol was obtained. The estimated activation energy values make it possible to build a simpler approach to expose the thermal decomposition behavior of copolymer and its composite. Dielectric and electrical behaviors of the copolymer composites having a semiconductor behavior filled with graphite oxide (GO) were investigated. The activation energy values of P(BFMAA15%-co-EMA)[COP2]/GO 18 wt% and COP1/GO 18wt% from dc conductivities were 0.182 eV and 0.245 eV, respectively.

Synthesis, thermal degradation and dielectric properties of poly[2-hydroxy,3-(1-naphthyloxy)propyl methacrylate]

Biryan, Fatih; Demirelli, Kadir; Torgut, Gulben; Pihtili, Guzin

2-Hydroxy-3-(1-naphthyloxy)propyl methacrylate (NOPMA) monomer was synthesized from reaction of 2-[(2-naphthyloxy)methyl]oxirane with methacrylic acid in the presence of pyridine. The polymerization of NOPMA was carried out by free radical polymerization method in the presence of AIBN at 60 A degrees C. The structure of monomer and polymer was characterized by H-1-NMR, C-13-NMR and FT-IR spectroscopy techniques. The glass transition temperature and average-molecular weights of poly(NOPMA) were measured using differential scanning calorimetry and gel permeation chromatography, respectively. The thermal degradation behavior of poly(NOPMA) has been investigated by FT-IR studies of the partially degraded polymer and thermogravimetry. The cold ring fractions (CRFs) were collected at two different temperatures, initially fraction-1 (CRF1) is from room temperature to 320 A degrees C, and the other fraction-2 (CRF2) is from 320 to 500 A degrees C. The volatile products of the degradation were trapped at -195 A degrees C (in liquid nitrogen). All the fractions were characterized by FT-IR, H-1 and C-13-NMR spectroscopic techniques, and the cold ring fractions (CRFs) were also characterized by GC-MS. For the degradation of polymer, the major compound between products of CRFs is alpha-naphthol. The GC-MS, FT-IR and NMR data showed that depolymerization corresponding to monomer was not prominent below 320 A degrees C in the thermal degradation of poly(NOPMA). The mode of thermal degradation containing formation of the major products was identified. The dielectric permittivity (epsilon'), the loss factor (epsilon aEuro(3)) and conductivity (sigma(ac)) were measured using a dielectric analyzer in the frequency range of 50 Hz to 20 kHz.
