İkinci Katil [The Second Murderer]: A Turkish Adaptation of Shakespeare's Scottish Play, Macbeth

    Öğütcü, Murat

Serhat Yiğit’s İkinci Katil (2017) is a Turkish adaptation of Shakespeare’s Macbeth. Reminiscent of Tom Stoppard’s Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are Dead (1966), it focuses on minor characters and their otherwise disregarded and peripheral microcosms. However, different from the post-modern self-reflexivity of Stoppard’s play, Yiğit uses an Aristotelian model in his play. Through its concentration on hitherto insignificant minor characters, non-self-reflexive intertextuality, and non-Brechtian acting, İkinci Katil departs both from conventional Shakespearean tragedies and conventionalised avant-garde post-Shakespearean interpretations of these tragedies. The construction of the stage and scenery allows to construct and to deconstruct the play and the source text’s interplay of textual allusions by setting the story of Macbeth to the periphery and the story of the Second Murderer, Warden, to the centre of the action. Therefore, this article will analyse Yiğit’s İkinci Katil and illustrate how the play borrows, adapts and transforms Shakespeare’s Macbeth.

Teaching Shakespeare digitally: the Turkish experience

    Öğütcü, Murat

Although teaching Shakespeare in Turkey naturally creates barriers of language, space and time, the use of digital humanities helped me to overcome these obstacles. My experiences at Hacettepe University, Ankara, Turkey, showed me that combining conventional methods of teaching Shakespeare in Turkey with digital tools helps to familiarise students with Shakespeare's plays both in the Early Modern English and Modern Turkish contexts. To motivate students to study Shakespeare's plays within and without the classroom environment, I used conventional methods like teacher-led assignments and methods including the use of social media and social projects which were then unconventional.

Dostlar ve Hizipler Üzerine: Shakespeare’in Tarih Oyunları

Against „others‟ feet‟: Reassessing Nationalism in Sidney and Spenser

    Öğütcü, Murat

The critical tradition positions Sir Philip Sidney and Edmund Spenser among the pioneers of the nationalisticmovement in Early Modern England. From a historical point of view, this has been the result of the promotion ofBritishness by 19th and 20th century literary critics through their construction of national poets in the literarycanon. Yet, the idea of nation in the Early Modern Period was a multi-layered phenomenon in which religion, sectarianism, race, geography, and social rank were of significance. International and intranational relationshipscould be felt on a daily basis on the streets of the relatively cosmopolitan London that was populated by theEnglish, the Dutch, and the French, which were further divided into Protestants, Catholics, Puritans, and manymore groups in the 16th century. What is more, intellectual discussions about the promotion of the Englishtongue on literary and non-literary levels were far from the homogeny which our present understanding of nationalismimplies. Rather, literary and non-literary intellectual discussions were the result of the negotiations ofimitation, translation, appropriation, and experimentation. Hence, nationalism should be re-historicised from its19th and 20th century concepts to the 16th century to understand to what extent Sidney and Spenser were proudof and promoted their national identities in their works. Accordingly, this article will attempt to discuss nationalismin Sidney and Spenser‟s works with a primary focus on their poetry.

The politics of sports in louise page's golden girls

    Öğütcü, Murat

The 1960s and the 1970s witnessed the transition in British sports from amateurism toprofessionalism. Thereafter, sportspersons have obtained material opportunities withsponsorships and attracted entrepreneurs. However, since sponsors in this new era havebeen using sportspersons to manipulate consumer behaviour, the vested interests ofcapitalists led to the misuse of the media and medical industry at the cost of the health ofsportspersons. The commodifcation of sports has put much pressure on sportspersons forsportive success. This pressure, on the other hand, has been tried to be circumvented bythe illegal use of doping. Although sportspersons in countries of the Iron Curtain were statesponsored, thus were not pressed by entrepreneurs for sportive success, they faced asimilar pressure by their states. To show their political superiority, countries of the IronCurtain forced their sportspersons to use doping. Louise Page in her Golden Girls (1984)criticises, in a light tone, the politics of sports in the Britain of the 1980s. She looks at theresult of the transformation of sports from amateurism to professionalism, deals with thefree use of doping in Iron Curtain countries to contrast it with the illegal use of doping incapitalist Britain, and focuses on the topical issues about British sportswomen and theoppression they have felt because of their gender by the male dominated world of sports. Therefore, this article will frst give a brief history of the development of athletics in Britainfrom the 1960s onwards, then the relationship between media and sports thatcommodifes sports in the Britain of the 1980s, and lastly the use and effects of doping asthey are refected in Golden Girls.

Built on Elizabethan dramatic conventions and religious debates about ghosts, Hamletemploys linguistic and dramatic means to chill its audience. Audio-visual means, alongwith the manner of entrances and exits, are used in order to horrify the audience. Thesecreate a fuctuation between belief and disbelief towards the macabre elements in theplay, which in turn heightens the fear in the audience. Thus, through these elements, gothic catharsis is achieved, which creates cathartic horror that generates fear in theaudience. The overall sensory experience in the Early Modern amphitheatre in which theplay was enacted had a great effect on the creation of this form of catharsis. Therefore, thisarticle aims to illustrate how the Elizabethan playhouse experience affected audiencereaction towards macabre elements and triggered gothic catharsis in Hamlet.

Elizabeth Sahnesi’nin içinde/dışında İdam ve Adalet Shakespeare’in İlk Dörtlemesi

Bu durum, özellikle, Shakespeare’in İlk Dörtlemesi’nde (1589-1594 civarı) kendini göstermiştir. Bundan dolayı, bu makalenin amacı yürütme erki uygulaması olarak kamuya açık idamların politika ve poetika’sını incelemek ve tiyatrolarda bununla ilgili gösterilen sahnelerin gelişigüzel yargılamalardan dolayı oluşan toplum gerginliğini azaltmadığını, aksine, Geç Elizabeth Dönemi’ndeki bu gerginliği arttırdığını örneklemektir.
