Docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) was the major polyunsaturated fatty acid (PUFA) in the sperm plasma membrane, and the levels of PUFAs decreased in treated groups during the cryopreservation process. The supplementation of TT (Tribulus terrestris) to Cyprinus carpio sperm at 200 µg∙L-1 positively affected the maintenance of motility parameters and FAs levels after the freeze-thaw cycle, and TT can be used as an herbal medicine instead of synthetic pharmaceuticals to improve the productive performance in aquaculture.

Ferula sp. is a perennial herbaceous plant and is used in traditional medicine owing to their antimicrobial, antiviral, aphrodisiac and spermatogenic activities in the world. Hence, Ferula sp. was used in the present study for cryopreservation protocol as a herbal supplement. The impact of different concentrations [0 mM (Control), 30 µg L−1, 60 µg L−1, 90 µg L−1] of Ferula sp. extract on the quality and fatty acid (FAs) composition was assessed in fresh and cryopreserved sperm of Cyprinus carpio. Optimal supplementation of Ferula sp. at a concentration of 60 µg L−1 in the freezing extender significantly improved post-thawed sperm quality of C. carpio. Sperm motility parameters were assessed using the sperm class analyzer system. The fatty acid (FAs) content in sperm was analyzed using gas chromatography. The results revealed that the increases in motility rate (80.0 ± 3.54%) at 60 µg L−1 were increased significantly (p < 0.05). Significant differences in sperm parameters [(VCL: curvilinear velocity, VSL: straight line velocity, VAP: average path velocity, and BCF: beat cross frequency)] were observed between the different treatments (p < 0.05). The Monounsaturated fatty acids (MUFAs) showed a slight increase in comparison to fresh spermatozoa during cryopreservation. DHA (Docosahexaenoic acid), LA (Linoleic acid) and ARA (Arachidonic acid) were identified as the major PUFAs (polyunsaturated fatty acid) in the sperm plasma membrane, and however the total PUFAs reduced all treated compared to fresh sperm samples after post-thawing. Overall, the supplementation with Ferula sp. to extender at a concentration of 60 µg L−1 positively influenced the motility parameters and FAs levels during cryopreservation and, Ferula sp. may act as a promising protective substance for the conservation of valuable fish genetic resources.

The depletion of unique genetic resources and increased risk of extinction may result from hybridization between native and introduced species. In the present study, morphological and molecular analysis were performed on two putative natural interspecific hybrids of the genus Salmo and their parent species, Salmo labrax and Salmo munzuricus, collected from Uzunçayır Dam Lake, which is fed by Munzur and Pülümür streams. Molecular analyses revealed the presence of S. labrax in Uzunçayır Dam Lake for the first time. Phylogenetic analysis using the cytochrome b (Cytb) gene of mitochondrial DNA to determine the maternal origin revealed that hybrid individuals belonged to the same clades as S. labrax or S. munzuricus. Recombination activating gene 1 (Rag1) sequence of nuclear DNA was analyzed for paternal analysis and it was determined that hybrid individuals carried similar single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) to S. labrax or S. munzuricus. These findings support that individuals derive from different parental species. Therefore, evidence from trout samples assumed to be natural hybrids in this study suggests interspecific hybridization between S. labrax and S. munzuricus, but further studies are required. Tribulus terrestris (TT) is a famous traditional plant of family Zygophyllaceae and widely distributes around the world. TT has potential to elevate the testosterone, testosterone precursor and luteinizing hormone levels. In this study, trials were conducted to assessment the impact of Tribulus terrestris addition on sperm motility of rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) for the first time. In the trial, we used to different concentrations [0 µg L-1 (Control), 200 µg L-1, 400 µg L-1, 600 µg L-1, 800 µg L-1 and 1000 µg L-1] of T. terrestris extract. Sperm motility characteristics and longevity were determined. In addition, protodioscin content of T. terrestris extract was assessed. The present study revealed that the presence of T. terrestris caused to increase in sperm motility. The increases in duration (49.00±3.61 s) and motility rate (91.67±2.89%) at 400 µg L-1 were statistically significant (p<0.05). Overall, addition of T. terrestris to activation solution can increase the sperm motility of rainbow trout.

Akdeniz bölgesinin güneydoğu kesiminde A. leptodactylus yetiştiriciliği sıcaklık toleransı açısından uygun olabilir.

Triplicate groups of 20 European sea bass (35 g) were fed five diets in which the added lipid was 100% fish oil (FO), 40% (CSO40), 60% (CSO60), 80% (CSO80) and 100% (CSO100) refined cottonseed oil (CSO), for a period of 120 days. Overall fish growth, feed conversion ratio and protein utilization were unaffected by dietary treatment, but hepatosomatic and visceral fat indexes increased with increasing dietary CSO. Fillet fatty acid composition of total lipids reflected the fatty acids in the test diets. The monounsaturated fatty acids were significantly higher in fillet of fish fed diet FO, CSO40 and CSO60 compared to other treatments while saturated and polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA) were not affected by the dietary treatment. Some fatty acids (18:0, 18:1n-9, 20:5n-3 and 22:6n-3) were present in higher concentration in fillet lipid than in the CSO100 dietary lipid indicating accumulation in fillet relative to test diets. Retention of n-3 LC-PUFA within the fillet was increasingly inefficient among fish fed increasing levels of FO. Thus, this study suggests that CSO can be considered as a relatively effective substitute for fish oil in European sea bass (35 g) in terms of growth performances and feed efficiency as far as fish meal is present in the diet.

The compensatory growth response of the European sea bass (Dicentrarchus labrax) that faced cycling starvation and restricted ration was assessed. Juveniles (10.5g) were stocked into 15 tanks at a density of 25 fish per tank. Five different feeding regimes were tested on triplicate groups of fish: CSatiation: control fed for 60days without deprivation, CRestricted: 25% restricted feeding, S-R: 1day starvation then 4days CRestricted feeding, R-F: 1day CRestricted feeding then 4days CSatiation feeding, and, finally, S-F: 1day starvation then 4days CSatiation feeding. The specific growth rate of fish in the CSatiation (2.5 +/- 0.06%day-1), S-F (2.5 +/- 0.11%day-1) and R-F (2.4 +/- 0.18%day-1) were significantly higher than that of CRestricted (2.2 +/- 0.05%day-1) or S-R (2.0 +/- 0.01%day-1). Fish in S-F group were able to achieve catching up with the CSatiation. There was no significant difference in feed conversion rates but R-F and S-F consumed approximately 34% more feed than CSatiation following the first re-feeding day. Although, the highest lipid content was observed in CSatiation (14.4%), S-R (33.3% dry matter) had the highest water content compared with the CSatiation and CRestricted (37.8% and 36.9% dry matter respectively). In conclusion, it may be concluded that sea bass has rapid response to cycling starvation/re-feeding and that a 25% restricted feeding ratio is insufficient to invoke a compensatory growth response in sea bass.
