Morphological, karyological and palynological investigation of endemic Centaurea kurdica Reichardt from Turkey

    Hayta, S.; Tasar, N.; Kiran, Y.; Cakilcioglu, U.; Bagci, E.

The purpose of this study was to determine the morphological, morphometrical, karyological and palynological features of the endemic Centaurea kurdica Reichardt species from East Anatolian region. Some morphological features of the species like morphology of capitula, involucra, involucral leaves (phyllaries) and achene have been investigated. The chromosome number of Centaurea kurdica was found as 2n = 18 and haploid karyotype formula 6m + 2sm + 1M. Metaphase chromosome length ranged from 5.81 to 3.91 mu m and the total haploid chromosome length was 41.09 mu m. The results of the light microscope investigation of pollen revealed that it is radially symmetrical, isopolar tricolporate and has spheroid-type pollen, and exine ornamentation was also determined as scabrate.

Essential Oil Composition, Antioxidant and Antifungal Activities of Salvia sclarea L. from Munzur Valley in Tunceli, Turkey

    Yuce, E.; Yildirim, N.; Yildirim, N. C.; Paksoy, M. Y.; Bagci, E.

The essential oil composition and in vitro antioxidant and antifungal activity of the Salvia sclarea L. from Munzur Valley in Tunceli, Turkey were evaluated in this research. The in vitro antifungal activity of ethanol, hexane and aqueous extracts of S. sclarea against pathogen fungi Epicoccum nigrum and Colletotrichum coc-codes were investigated. The essential oil of aerial parts of S. sclarea was obtained by hydrodistillation and was analysed by GC and GC-MS. Total antioxidant status was determined by using Rel assay diagnostics TAS assay kit (Lot. RL024) by Multiscan FC (Thermo). 33 compounds were identified representing the 85.0% of the total oil. The most abundant components (> 5%) of the S. sclarea essential oils were caryophyllene oxide (24.1%), sclareol (11.5%), spathulenol (11.4%), 1H-naphtho (2,1,6) pyran (8.6%) and beta-caryophyllene (5.1%). The best antifungal and antioxidant effect was seen in ethanolic S. sclarea extract. It can be said that Salvia sclerae could be used as natural antioxidant.

Study of the Essential Oil Composition of Lallenmantia iberica (M. Bieb.) Fisch and CA Mey. (Lamiaceae) from Turkey

    Yuce, E.; Bagci, E.

The essential, oil of wild-growing Lallemantia iberica (Lamiceae) from Turkey was obtained by hydrodistillation and analyzed by GC and GC-MS. In the oil of the Lallemantia iberica, 40 components were characterized representing 90.1 % of the total oil, with germacrene-D (36.0 %), beta-caryophyllene (18.3 %) and bicyclogermacrene (9.7 %) as the main constituents. The results showed that the analysis of essential oil composition will add some contributions on the usability of this plant as a crop and renewable resources and chemotaxonomy of the genus patterns.
