This study investigates the influence of Y2O3 addition on the microstructure, growth kinetics, and mechanical properties of TiO2-based ceramic coatings formed on Ti–6Al–4V alloy through the Micro Arc Oxidation (MAO) process. The experiments were carried out using Ti–6Al–4V plates coated in silicate-based electrolytes, with and without 1 g/L Y2O3, under a constant current density of 5 A/dm2 and a voltage of 360 ± 20 V for different treatment times (1, 3, 7, and 10 min). The coatings were evaluated by weight gain measurements, SEM/EDS analyses, X-ray diffraction (XRD), and constant load scratch testing supported by profilometry. Results revealed that Y2O3 significantly accelerated coating growth during the initial stages, leading to higher weight gains and denser, less porous morphologies compared to Y2O3-free coatings. XRD analysis indicated amorphous TiO2 and anatase phases at short durations, while rutile formation became dominant with longer treatments. Kinetic modeling demonstrated that both coatings initially followed a linear reaction-controlled mechanism (n ≈ 1), with calculated growth constants of 3.44 × 10⁻4 mg/mm2·s for Ti-MAO and 7.45 × 10⁻4 mg/mm2 s for Ti–Y2O3–MAO. However, after approximately 420 s, the Y2O3 coatings exhibited a marked reduction in growth rate due to electrical insulation effects of the thickened ceramic layer, resulting in multi-stage kinetics. Constant load scratch testing showed that Y2O3 incorporation reduced groove depth and width by nearly 45%, improving adhesion strength and mechanical durability. These findings confirm that rare-earth oxide addition is an effective strategy for enhancing the performance of MAO coatings on titanium alloys.

In this study, micro-arc oxidation (MAO) coatings containing different concentrations of ZrO2 were fabricated on 7075 Al alloy in a silicate-based electrolyte to evaluate their microstructural evolution, surface characteristics, and tribological performance. The coatings were produced at 390 V for 30 min in an electrolyte containing 10 g/L Na2SiO3 with ZrO2 additions of 0, 3, 6, and 9 g/L. Surface and cross-sectional morphologies were examined by SEM/EDS, while surface topography and wear track profiles were characterized by profilometry. Tribological behavior was evaluated under dry sliding conditions using a reciprocating tribometer. The results revealed that ZrO2 incorporation markedly influenced the coating growth behavior and surface morphology. The Zr0-MAO coating exhibited a rough and porous structure with large discharge channels, whereas the addition of ZrO2 led to a more compact and homogeneous morphology with reduced porosity. Among the coated samples, Zr6-MAO exhibited the most refined microstructure and the lowest surface roughness (Ra = 4.24 µm). This sample also showed the best tribological performance, with the lowest coefficient of friction (0.27), wear volume (0.0065 mm3), and wear rate (1.63 × 10−4 mm3/N·m). To provide a comprehensive multi-criteria assessment, grey relational analysis (GRA) was employed by simultaneously considering coating thickness, surface roughness, friction coefficient, wear volume, and wear rate. The GRA results were consistent with the experimental findings and identified Zr6-MAO as the optimum coating condition. These findings demonstrate that a moderate ZrO2 addition is highly effective in improving the compactness and wear resistance of MAO-coated 7075 Al alloy.

Cu-Al-Mn-Fe high-temperature shape memory alloys containing 0-1.0 wt.% La2O3 were fabricated by vacuum arc remelting to investigate oxide-dispersion effects on microstructure, martensitic transformation, wear, and corrosion behavior. XRD and SEM analyses revealed that low La2O3 additions (0.2-0.4 wt.%) promoted β1′ martensite refinement and enhanced crystallinity, while higher contents induced structural heterogeneity. The alloy with 0.4 wt.% La2O3 exhibited the highest transformation enthalpy (7.49 J g−1), reduced friction coefficient (~0.55), and the narrowest wear scar (~501 µm). Electrochemical tests in 3.5 wt.% NaCl showed a fivefold decrease in corrosion current density and increased charge-transfer resistance (2512 Ω cm2) for the same composition. Excessive La2O3 led to performance degradation due to particle agglomeration and interfacial defects. The results demonstrated that controlled La2O3 addition enabled microstructural refinement and multifunctional performance enhancement in Cu-based shape memory alloys.

In this study, CeO2-doped ceramic coatings were produced on Al 1050 alloy by micro-arc oxidation (MAO) using a silicate-alkaline electrolyte containing 0, 0.5, 1, and 2% CeO2. The aim was to investigate the effect of CeO2 addition on the microstructure, phase composition, corrosion behavior, and constant-load scratch adhesion performance of the coatings. Surface characterization was carried out by SEM, EDS, XRD, and 3D profilometry, while corrosion performance was evaluated by potentiodynamic polarization and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy in 3.5 wt% NaCl solution. Scratch tests were also performed to assess the mechanical integrity of the coatings. The results showed that increasing CeO2 content improved coating uniformity, reduced surface roughness and porosity, and promoted the formation of a denser oxide structure. XRD analysis confirmed that γ-Al2O3 was the predominant alumina phase in all coatings, while Ce-containing species were incorporated into the oxide layer without forming additional detectable phases. Electrochemical results revealed that CeO2 addition significantly improved corrosion resistance by lowering the corrosion current density and increasing the polarization resistance. Scratch test results further showed improved adhesion-related behavior with reduced crack formation and surface damage. Overall, CeO2 addition effectively enhanced both the corrosion protection and mechanical performance of MAO coatings on Al 1050 alloy.

- MakaleAçık Erişim2025Scopus SJRQ2A Novel CuAlMnFe/CeO2 Composite Alloy: Investigating the Wear and Corrosion Features
Doğan, Fatih; Duru, Erhan
Shape memory alloys (SMAs) are known for their exceptional mechanical properties, particularly their superior wear resistance compared to conventional alloys with similar surface hardness. Rare earth oxides are often used as additives to further improve these characteristics. This study investigates the effects of different CeO2 (cerium dioxide) concentrations (0.01 wt.%, 0.1 wt.%, 0.5 wt.%, and 1.0 wt.%) on the properties of CuAlMnFe alloys produced via powder metallurgy (PM). Various analyses were performed, including scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Energy Dispersive Spectroscopy (EDS), X-ray diffraction (XRD), as well as hardness, wear, and corrosion tests. The increase in wear rate is closely related to the formation of precipitates from CeO2 addition. Improvements in wear resistance and hardness are attributed to the effects of grain refinement and solid solution strengthening due to CeO2. Specifically, the wear rate increased from 1.5 × 10−3 mm3/(Nm) to 3.4 × 10−3 mm3/(Nm) with higher CeO2 content. Additionally, the friction coefficient of the CuAlMnFe alloy was reduced with CeO2 addition, indicating enhanced frictional properties. The optimal CeO2 concentration of 0.5% was found to improve grain uniformity, resulting in better wear resistance. Incorporating CeO2 particles into CuAlMnFe alloy enhances hardness and reduces wear rate when used in appropriate amounts. Additionally, it exhibits superior corrosion resistance, as evidenced by a positive shift in corrosion potential in Tafel measurements in solutions and a decrease in corrosion current density. The C0.5 specimen showed the highest corrosion potential (Ecorr, −588 V) and the lowest corrosion current density (icorr, 6.17 μA/cm2) during electrochemical corrosion in 3.5 wt.% NaCl solution.

- MakaleYalnız künye2024Scopus SJRQ2CeO2/SWCNT nanocomposite coating: A novel approach for corrosion application
Doğan, Fatih
The coatings were prepared by blending different concentrations of SWCNTs and CeO2 particles with an epoxy resin by hydrothermal method, which was then applied to the substrate through the doctor blade technique. The mixtures were transferred into a 1-L capacity autoclave with a teflon-lined flange type and subjected to hydrothermal treatment at 100°C for 3 h. The surface coatings were applied using a doctor blade. Subsequently, the coated materials were placed in an oven and dried for 12 h at 50°C under vacuum conditions. The samples' structural analysis was examined through x-ray diffraction (XRD). XRD analysis verified the CeO2/SWCNT composite coating, and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) was utilized to assess the presence of functional groups. Thermodynamic properties and thermal stability of composite coatings that were modified with SWCNTs and CeO2 particles were studied by thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). The impact of the CeO2/SWCNT composite on the anticorrosion capabilities of the epoxy coating was examined through electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS), Nyquist curve, and Tafel slope characterization. Corrosion tests were conducted on the CeO2/SWCNT composite coatings in a 3.5 wt% sodium chloride (NaCl) solution at 25°C to improve corrosion resistance. The concentration of 0.4 wt% CeO2 was found to be optimal for achieving effective corrosion resistance. The composite coating CNT0.6-C0.4 exhibited significantly higher Ecorr (−426 V) and lower Icorr (2.96 × 10−6 A cm−2) values compared to samples from the CNT0, CNT0.2, and CNT0.6 groups. The paper presents a viable solution with CeO2/SWCNT composite coating for the engineering application of corrosive-inhibiting coatings.

Electrically conductive concretes produced for different purposes were introduced years ago and since then, intensive scientific research has been going on. Studies in the literature have generally been carried out on conventional concretes with electrical conductivity for floor applications. The current study investigates carbon fiber reinforced mortars filled with fine olivine aggregate. Fine aggregate filled mortars are generally produced for building facade applications. Within the scope of the study, the mechanical, electrical, dynamic and microstructural properties of cementitious mortars containing 0.5%, 0.75% and 1.0% carbon fiber and 100% recycled olivine aggregate were investigated. The purpose of performing dynamic resonance tests was to investigate the effect of carbon fiber on damping ratio. 28-Day compressive, flexural, dynamic resonance, ultrasonic pulse velocity (UPV), Leeb hardness and dry density tests of conductive mortar samples obtained from four different mixtures were performed. In addition, 2, 14, 28, 90 and 180 days electrical conductivity tests were carried out to determine their resistivity in different time intervals. The purpose of performing dynamic resonance tests was to investigate the effect of carbon fiber on damping ratio. While a significant positive effect of CF on electrical conductivity and damping ratio was observed, a negligible decrease in mechanical results was observed. Calcium silicate hydrate (C-S-H) structure formed by hydration using olivine filler in the cement mixture confirmed the binding formations.

Recently, great efforts have been made by researchers on the mixture of electrically conductive concretes that have been developed for different purposes. In this study, an experimental research was carried out on electrically conductive mortar mixtures especially for shell elements produced for building facade cladding. Six different mixtures were produced, including the non-conductive reference mixture. Single-walled carbon nanotube (SWCNT) was used as nano-sized conductive additive material. SWCNT was added at 0.2% and 0.3% of cement weight. SF was added to the same mixtures as another group at the rate of 4% by total weight. 2, 14, 28, 90 and 180 days electrical resistivities of the obtained conductive mortar samples were measured. As a non-destructive method, dynamic resonance testing was performed and the 28-day damping rates of the samples were determined. Ultrasonic pulse velocity (UPV) and Leeb hardness tests were performed, respectively, by using other non-destructive testing methods to obtain information about the internal structure voids and surface hardness of the samples. SWCNT, which causes low machinability and therefore internal structure voids, caused a decrease in compressive strength and flexural strength, as well as a significant increase in electrical conductivity.

İncele - MakaleAçık Erişim2022Characterization of carbon fiber reinforced conductive mortars filled with recycled ferrochrome slag aggregates

Recently, it has been known that carbon fiber, a conductive fiber, is used in different mixture designs and the development of electrically conductive cementitious materials. Howev-er, the evaluation of ferrochrome slag as a recycled aggregate in the mixture of these special concretes has still not been investigated. In this study, electrically conductive mortars were produced using 100% recycled ferrochrome slag aggregate with a particle size of less than 1 mm as filling material and using carbon fiber in 4 different ratios, 0%, 0.5%, 0.75%, and 1%. To investigate the electrical conductivity properties, the resistivity values of the samples were measured at five different times within 2–180 days. In addition, 28-day compressive strength, flexural strength, dynamic resonance, ultrasonic pulse velocity, Leeb hardness, scanning elec-tron microscope, and X-Ray Diffraction tests were performed on all samples. The results were compared with the literature, proving that ferrochrome slag could be used as a reasonable aggregate in conductive mortars. The age effect was minimal in CF-added mixtures. With the addition of 1% CF, the resistivity values decreased approximately 40 times compared to the ref-erence. Moreover, SEM analyses of the CF-0.75 sample showed that the CFs adhered to form a conductive network between the components in the ferrochrome-filled compact structure.

İncele - MakaleAçık Erişim2022Effects of single-walled carbon nanotubes and steel fiber on recycled ferrochrome filled electrical conductive mortars
Dehghanpour, Heydar; Doğan, Fatih; Subaşi, Serkan; Maraşli, Muhammed
The production of electrically conductive concrete was introduced years ago among construction materials, generally for anti-icing. The present study investigates the electrical, mechani-cal, dynamic, and microstructural properties of recycled ferrochrome filled cementitious mortars containing single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) and steel fiber. Within the scope of the study, a total of 5 different mixtures were obtained. 7, 14, and 28-day non-destructive and 28-day compressive and bending tests of cementitious conductive mortars obtained from five different mixtures were performed. The two-point uniaxial method was used to determine the electrical conductivity properties of the samples. The damping ratio of the samples was obtained by performing dynamic resonance tests. Ultrasound pulse velocity (UPV) and Leeb hardness tests were performed as other non-destructive testing methods. Microstructure analysis at the interfaces of conductive concrete samples was characterized by scanning elec-tron microscopy (SEM), EDS (Energy-Dispersive X-ray Spectroscopy), and X-ray diffraction (XRD). The results showed a logical agreement when comparing their mechanical, physical, and dynamic properties. When SWCNT is used with steel fiber, the conductive mortar samples exhibited good conductivity, while their compressive and bending strengths turned below.
