Erdem, Necla Seval; Asikoglu, Ahunur; Altun, Müjde

In order to improve today's conditions and to ensure a healthy life for future generations, different solutions have been sought in different areas around the world and important steps have been taken in this direction. As the building sector is one of the leading sectors in terms of energy consumption, steps towards creating living conditions in comfortable and healthy spaces made by various regulations, directives, etc. started to be taken with studies, while reducing the energy use in buildings. According to the Energy Performance in Buildings Directive-recast published by the European Union in 2010, member states were asked to set and implement their own NZEB (nearly zero energy building) targets. During this period, there has been an increase in the use of existing certification systems whose criteria meet the country's NZEB objectives. In recent years, countries in different climatic zones have started to construct buildings that comply with the Passive House certification system and the EnerPHit certification system, the version used in existing buildings. In the study, specifications have been analyzed in detail and the results achieved over values through 34 different EnerPhit certified buildings in the world, including one in Turkey. With this study, it is aimed to contribute to the literature with the examination the analysis of EnerPHit certification system criteria, the application techniques, potential for Turkey. Reducing the dependence on foreign energy in Turkey with energy efficient improvement of the existing building stock in country, creation of healthy and comfortable and energy consumption costs will be provided.

Phase change material applications on buildings using whole-building energy simulation tools

Erdem, Necla Seval; Orhon, Ahmet Vefa

In this paper, building energy simulation tools that analyze the applicability of phase change materials used in passive air conditioning applications in different building components and in different climatic conditions and studies using these tools will be discussed. Within the scope of the study, the concepts of phase change materials and energy simulation tools will be examined and selected examples based on the scanning model will be examined according to different environmental conditions and application details. The study is a review that emphasizes the need to match the experimental researches conducted in recent years with energy simulation tools.

Investigation of Phase Change Materials on the Use of Trombe Walls for Thermal Energy Storage Systems

Erdem, Necla Seval; Orhon, Ahmet Vefa

This study is conducted to determine the contribution of phase change materials (PCM) and trombe walls (TW) for energy efficiency and it is aimed to identify the criterias that is required during design process. In this study, after giving general definitions about PCM and TW, domestic and foreign literature is searched and application examples are analyzed and compared. It is observed that phase changing trombe wall (PCTW) application alleviated the heavy mass of the wall unlike the traditional methods and PCM increased the efficiency of heating and cooling applications by providing latent heat storage to the massive wall. Although TW has simple application schemes, there are some difficulties in achieving full efficiency. It can be confusing to predict how a PCTW, whose details are decided, will respond to environmental conditions throughout the whole year. Accordingly, considering the criteria that will affect the system before designing the PCTW, it will increase efficiency to see possible problems that the wall may face. In the PCTW system, which is planned to be designed in a specific climate zone, the most efficient result can be achieved by optimization of these criterias.
