The Effect of Gadolinium and Lanthanum on the Mortality ofDaphnia magna

Korkmaz, Volkan; Ergüven, Gökhan Önder; Yildirim, Numan; Cıkcıoğlu Yıldırım, Nuran

Rare earth elements (REEs) have been recently identified as emergent contaminants because of their numerous and increasingapplications in technology. The impact of REEs on downstream ecosystems, notably aquatic organisms, is of particular concern, but has to date been largely overlooked. The purpose of this study were to generate toxicological information regarding thesepoorly studied Gadolinium and Lanthanum elements to determine the current risk associated with these elements. The results of this work indicate notable D. magna mortality in high concentration of La and Gd. The highest mortality rate was determined as100% at 100 mg/L concentration for both La and Gd at the end of the 24hour . At the end of the 48 hours, the highest mortalityrate for both La and Gd was observed at 100 mg/L concentration. No mortality was determined at 48 hours at a concentration of10 mg/l Gd. 100% mortality was observed for two elements at 50 and 100 mg/L concentrations at 72 hours. in the natural living water no death was seen in this time period. The findings from our study also indicate that Gd is more toxic than La. Due to thismortality effect of La and Gd to D. magna, it will be important for the ensuring continuity of the ecosystem to monitor especiallyaquatic environments and to treat them with appropriate treatment methods from contaminated environments.

Monitoring the ethalfluralin biodegradation with certain bactofungi mixed culture

    Ergüven, Gökhan Önder

In this study, the biodegradation of ethalfluralin (C13H14F3N3O4), which is the most preferred herbicide in sunflower farming in Thrace region in Turkey, is investigated. Bacteria and fungi were isolated in soil samples obtained in Thrace region, and a mixed culture was prepared using equal volume of microorganism cultures. Five different apparatuses, including sterile agricultural soil were setup and ethalfluralin in 1,500 µg/L concentration was added to each apparatus, and they were watered for 6 weeks with sterilized tap water. Drained water was then collected, and the filtrates were measured for chemical oxygen demand (COD), biochemical oxygen demand (BOD5), total organic carbon (TOC) and ethalfluralin. Furthermore, pH and dissolved oxygen (DO) concentration were measured. Study results demonstrated that the highest biodegradation was observed in the soil sample that contained 10 mL mixed microorganism culture and ethalfluralin. In this filtrate, ethalfluralin, COD, BOD5 and TOC removals were measured as 92%, 85%, 82% and 97% respectively. The DO level remained between 3.00 and 4.50 mg/L in the first 3 weeks for all cultures. After the third week, it increased to 5.8 mg/L in the 5 mL culture mixture and to 7.1 mg/L in the 2 mL culture mixture. pH results demonstrated, an increase during the first 3 weeks and pH values decreased for all culture mixture media due to the formation of carbonic acid.

Role of some selected fungi cultures on bioremediation of herbicide chlorsulfuron

    Ergüven, Gökhan Önder

This study aims for the performance of certain soil fungi for bioremediation of chlorsulfuron herbicide solutions on chemical oxygen demand (COD), biochemical oxygen demand (BOD), total organic carbon (TOC) and active ingredient parameters under agitated culture conditions. Soil fungi were isolated from chlorsulfuron-free soil in an agricultural field. Based on the laboratory experiment results, A. Alternata had the highest removal rate for all parameters about 5-6 days. Additionally, it was observed that M. chlamydosporia showed the lowest COD and active ingredient removal efficiency. On the other hand, TOC removal rates were similar with P. simplicissimum, M. chlamydosporia and S. chartarum species nearly 53%. It was demonstrated that, there were a suitable isolated fungi species for bioremediation of chlorsulfuron in agricultural soil media. It was conducted that all isolated fungi demonstrated up to 50% ability to degrade chlorsulfuron on important environmental parameters.
