Regarding the Pain of Miners: Representation of Soma Disaster in Press in Turkey

    Özdemir, İnan; Keneş Çoban, Hatice

This article analyzes the discursive representation of 2014 Soma coal mine disaster in the most circulated five national newspapers (Zaman, Posta, Hürriyet, Sözcü, Sabah) in Turkey. As part of the analysis the newspapers were searched for a one-week period after the disaster (14-21 May 2014) and a total of 1169 news were found. The news were first analyzed with content analysis to depict the main topics of the coverage. In the second phase, the news were analyzed for their main discursive strategies. The results indicate that, despite their different political and editorial preferences, the newspapers overlooked the social, economic and political background of disaster by using three main discursive strategies: Generalization, dramatization and personalization. More specifically the press constructed a national mourning story from the pain of miners‟, dramatized the issue with focusing on the tragic stories about miners lives, deaths and heroisms and blamed the particular individuals for the causes of the mine, so that, the press covered the disaster with a class biased perspective.

Syrian 'Refugees' In Printed Press: Construction Of Rational And Emotinal Justifications Of Discriminatory Discourses

    Doğanay, Ülkü; Keneş Çoban, Hatice

This study problematizes the role of mainstream media in dissemination and justification of dicriminatory discourses against Syrian refugees in Turkey. Within the scope of the study, news stories and columns published in three mainstream newspapers (Zaman, Posta and Hürriyet), which have been selected according to their circulation number, in the period from 2011 April, when the first asylum seekers began to seek aylum in Turkey until the end of 2014, when the total number of Syrian asylum seekers exceeded two million. The fundamental supposition of the study is that the mainstream media operated within similar frameworks during the reproduction of discriminatory discourses against asylum seekers. Within the scope of the study, the news stories and columns published in these newspapers have been classified according to their topics, themes and how Syrian asylum seekers are portrayed in these stories and columns in order to have a better understanding of how the presence of Syrian asylum seekers in Turkey is problematized in the newspapers. In the second part of the study, the discouses in the news stories are analysed to reveal which words are used to describe the asylum seekers and on what grounds the content in these newspapers that reproduce the discriminatory opinions and judgments about asylum seekers is justified. In an endeavour to answer these questions, the study follows van Dijk's critical discourse analysis method to focus on the macro and micro structure of news stories and to analyse the interpretive framework of the discriminatory discourses against asylum seekers. The main findings of the study are that the presence of Syrian asylum seekers in Turkey are "problematized" on four main discursive domains oriented at constructing the rational justifications, emotional justifications of discrimination as well as rationalisation of emotions: In the news stories portraying Syrian asylum seekers as a "threat", this portrayal is used to criticize the foreign policy of the government, the asylum seekers, on the other hand, are associated with their economic burden and problems related to security. Secondly, the presence of Syrian asylum seekers in Turkey is "objectified" through an emphasis on how much Money has been spent, how much aid has been provided and how many asylum seekers are in Turkey without any regard to violation of rights and/or human consequences the issue. Thirdly, a discursive framework which "sentimentalize" the reactions against the presence of asylum seekers in Turkey, their conditions and their "excessive visibility" in cities.

Reflecting upon Ourselves through National Press Within the Framework of the visit of Pope Benedict XVI: Tolerant and Civilised Muslims, Admirable Turks *

    Özdemir, İnan; Keneş Çoban, Hatice

This study focuses on the handling of the visit of Pope Benedict XVI to Turkey in 2006 in the three best-selling newspapers of the period (Zaman, Hürriyet, Posta). Negative remarks of the Pope with regard to Islam and Turkey s membership to EU prior to his visit turned this visit into a struggle with a particular emphasis on the atrocity between us and them. Based upon the literature on the relationship between national press and nationalism, this study focuses on how the press constructs the image of us and them through certain discursive strategies. One of the findings of the study is that despite their different understandings with regard to publishing, the three newspapers handled Pope s visit as a tool of consolidation by reconstructing the "image of us" as Muslim Turks. The press emloyed the main strategies of denying one s own negative aspects and defamation of the other. For instance, the fact that Turkish politicians and bureaucrats addressed the Pope as "Mr. Pope" by ignoring his political and religious titles was regarded positively, whereas a particular emphasis was put on the "individuality" of the violence against religious minorities in Turkey stating that such acts were personal actions of the perpetrators. That Islam is a religion of "peace and reason" and that Muslims are tolerant people were frequently repeated in the news stories dealing with the visit, while Christianity was portrayed within the framework of the conflicts between Catholicism, Protestantism and Orthodoxy. In addition to that, an admirable and lovable image of Turks was constructed in the news stories through the "changing views" of the Pope. One of the striking findings of the study is the dramatic change in the language used in the news stories about the Pope. While the Pope was defamed in the news stories prior to his visit because of his negative remarks about Turkishness and Islam, he was portrayed moderately and positively due to his statements and behaviours praising the "image of us" during his visit.
