Analysis of buildings in Tunceli - Pülümür district with the Canadian seismic screening method

Gundogdu, Yunus Emre; Polat, Berivan Yilmazer

This study, which was conducted in the P & uuml;l & uuml;m & uuml;r district of Tunceli, was carried out in an area with high seismic risk due to the region's proximity to the Bing & ouml;l-Yedisu Fault. In the study, the earthquake safety of the existing building stock was assessed using visual inspection methods. In this context, 172 buildings in the P & uuml;l & uuml;m & uuml;r district of Tunceli province were examined in detail in terms of earthquake safety using the Canadian Seismic Screening Method. In the analysis, seismic safety levels of the buildings, structural and nonstructural risks were taken into consideration and seismic priority indexes (SPI) were determined. The results of the study revealed that a large portion of buildings in the P & uuml;l & uuml;m & uuml;r district carry different levels of risk of earthquake. Specifically, the evaluated building stock was entirely constructed before the critical year of 2007 and exhibits high seismic vulnerability. This critical threshold is technically attributed to two main regional factors: the design practices predating the 2007 Turkish Earthquake Code and the absence of ready-mixed concrete technology in Tunceli province prior to that year. Furthermore, based on the method's classification, it is suggested that buildings with a Seismic Priority Index (SPI) greater than 20, which indicates High to Very Hazardous risk levels, should be prioritized for detailed assessment and retrofitting, and that local governments should develop incentive policies for these mitigation efforts.

Anti-tank impact absorption with a reinforced concrete plate design

Polat, Berivan Yilmazer; Savaş, Sedat; Polat, Alper

Anti-tank weapons are among the infantry weapons used by the armies of many countries. Anti-tank rockets and explosives such as TNT, generally used for armour piercing, are also frequently used in terrorist attacks. These attacks damage the protection facilities built from reinforced concrete. Rockets or similar explosives’ rapid speed and burst temperatures pierce reinforced concrete during strikes, resulting in casualties and damage to crucial strategic structures. This study aimed to devise an economic and applicable reinforced concrete plate that could absorb the impact of anti-tank rockets and Trinitrotoluene (TNT) type explosives. Therefore, 5 different samples, produced from C50 reinforced concrete and 150×150 cm in size, were formed by combining plates of different numbers and thicknesses. Also, a sample, which was a single thick plate, was prepared. In destructive testing, Rocket Propelled Grenade (RPG-7) was used as the anti-tank rocket launcher. As a result of this study, the impact damage was reduced with hollow concrete plate geometries, and recommendations were developed for complete prevention.

Geo-polymer concretes: Structure, properties and materials

    Polat, Berivan Yilmazer

In recent years, different types of special concretes have been produced and used according to the usage principles of the buildings. One of these concretes is alkali active concretes produced without the need for cement production which is known as geopolymer concrete. Their high early strength, less drying-shrinkage, high fire, abrasion & acid resistance, less CO2 emissions, least setting time, and high freeze-thaw & corrosion resistance are reasons this type of concrete has emerged as an alternative to portland cement concrete. This concrete is formed by the reaction of material rich in alumina and silica with the activator. Since geopolymer concrete is more environmentally friendly than cementitious concrete, it has been the subject of many studies. Geopolymer concretes have some disadvantages despite all these advantages. One of them is brittleness. It is known that adding fibers to geopolymer concretes positively affects brittleness and ductility, compressive strength, and flexural strength. Also, mineral additives strengthen the durability of concrete. This work presents a summary of the literature on geopolymer concrete's foundations and disadvantages compared to portland cement concrete, mix proportions that give the best strength, management of fiber additives, performance analysis against burst rate, and resistance to attack.
