The structure, optical basicity, ligand field strength and shielding parameters of alkali/alkaline borate glasses doped with V2O5

    Sayyed, M.I.; Abdel-Ghany, A.M.; Askin, A.; Sedqy, E.M.; Sadeq, M.S.

In this work, we study the structural, optical and radiation shielding properties of Na2O–CaO-borate glass doped with different amounts of V2O5. A glass system with the composition (10.5CaO+ 16.5Na2O+ (73-x)B2O3+ xV2O5; where x = 0, 2.5, 5 and 10.5 mol%) was produced following the melt quenching technique. The molar volume and density of glasses both increase with the increase in V2O5:B2O3 ratios. Moreover, the average ligand field strength reduced from 2.32 to 2.15 × 1016 cm2 with the increase in V2O5:B2O3 ratios, which correlates with the increased values of molar volume and interatomic separations. Furthermore, the optical basicity of the glass samples increased from 0.601 to 0.666 with increasing V2O5:B2O3 ratios. The optical absorption spectra are studied for further investigation of the optical features. To extract the absorption edge and the absorption bands, a deconvolution process was applied to the absorption spectra. The obtained bands from this deconvolution process confirmed the presence of vanadium in its oxidation states V3+, V4+ and V5+. Furthermore, more additions of V2O5 produced an obvious reduction in Eg values from 3.69 to 3.08 eV along with a redshift in the fundamental absorption edges. These results were attributed to the further creation of nonbridging oxygens within the glass matrix. Furthermore, the addition of V2O5 rather than B2O3 enhances the radiation shielding parameters. Accordingly, the CaNaBV10.5 glass sample is the best attenuator among the fabricated CaO–Na2O–B2O3–V2O5 glasses due to the highest mass attenuation coefficient and lowest half-value layer. Moreover, the half-value layer values of the present glasses were compared to some common materials in the radiation shielding field. From this comparison, we concluded that all glass samples are better than commercial glass windows and ordinary concrete.

Radiation shielding and mechanical properties of Bi2O3–Na2O–TiO2–ZnO–TeO2 glass system

Sayyed, M.I.; Askin, Ali; Zaid, M.H.M.; Olukotun, S.F.; Khandaker, Mayeen Uddin; Tishkevich, Daria I.; Bradley, D.A.

Recently, heavy metal oxides (HMO) based glass systems attracted great attention to the scientific community to be used as an alternative to the conventional lead, lead composites and concrete based materials for protection of harmful radiation. In this work, we report the role of Bi2O3 on the mechanical and radiation shielding properties of Bi2O3–ZnO–TiO2–Na2O–TeO2 glass system as well as its mechanical behaviour. The mechanical properties of the glasses were calculated using Makishima-Mackenzie model and different shielding factors have been calculated using Monte Carlo simulation via Geant4 code and also using Phy-X software. The mechanical properties based on Makishima-Mackenzie model depend on the values of packing density (Vi) and dissociation energy (Gi) of the oxide constituents. The simulated values of the mass attenuation coefficient showed a good agreement between both approaches. The mass attenuation coefficient (MAC) at 0.284 MeV of the glass with 5 mol% of Bi2O3 is equal to 0.2083 cm2/g, at 0.662 MeV its equal to 0.0785 cm2/g, while at 1.33 MeV, its MAC is 0.0501 cm2/g. The transmitted percentage of the photons through the proposed glasses was found to rise with increasing the energy of the photon, while decreasing with rising the thickness of the glass sample. The transmission factor (TF) revealed that the greater the thickness of the glass, the lower the TF, and the better the shield. Also, the radiation protection efficiency of the glasses was enhanced with the addition of the Bi2O3. The glass sample with composition of 15Bi2O3–10ZnO–5TiO2–5Na2O–65TeO2 possesses the highest effective atomic number among the studied compositions and showed the lowest half value layer. From the obtained data, Bi2O3 seems to be a strong candidate for enhancing the gamma radiation attenuation factors in the bismuth-based tellurite glasses.

Boukhris, Imed; Kebaili, Imen; Sayyed, M.I.; Askin, A.; Rammah, Y.S.

Linear and nonlinear optical features of La3+ doped tellurite glasses in the form 75TeO2–10ZnO –5Li2O –(10-x)Nb2O5 –xLa2O3: x = 0, 0.5, 1.0, 1.5, 2.0, and 2.5 in mol% (abbreviated as La0.0. La0.5, La1.0, La1.5, La2.0, and La2.5) were investigated. Also, the γ-photons attenuation parameters were tested utilizing Geant4 simulation code. Results revealed that the molar polarizability (αmolar) takes values from 8.685 × 10−24 to 7.933 × 10−24 cm3, while the molar refraction (Rmolar) changes from 21.886 to 20.219 (cm3/mol) for La0.0 to La2.5 glasses. The static dielectric constant (εstatic) varies from 6.368 to 5.191, whereas optical electronegativity (χ*) varies from 0.690 to 0.852 for La0.0-La2.5 glasses. Non-linear optical susceptibility (χ3) decreases from 5.675 × 10−12 to 2.109 × 10−12 (esu) with increment La2O3 content in the glasses, while non-linear refractive index (n2optical) decreases from 8.472 × 10−11 to 3.488 × 10−11 (esu). The radiation attenuation characteristics for the tested glasses were investigated with the help of Geant4 code. The mass attenuation coefficient (μm) was simulated between 0.284 and 2.506 MeV. The influnce of La2O3 on the shielding parameters was examined. Among the studied glasses, La2.5 posseses the highest μm values. Also, La2.5 sample has the lowest transmission fraction, which implies that more photons can be attenuated with La2.5 glass using a thin glass layer. From the transmission fraction results, we found that thick glasses are needed to attenuate gamma rays coming at high energies. At 0.511 MeV, the half value layer (HVL) value of the La0.0 glass is 1.49 cm while, at the same energy, the HVL value of the La2.5 glass is 1.44 cm.

Structural, elastic, optical and γ-ray shielding behavior of Dy3+ ions doped heavy metal incorporated borate glasses

    Divina, R.; Sathiyapriya, G.; Marimuthu, K.; Askin, A.; Sayyed, M.I.

The effect of modifier ions in different basis have been analyzed through a new series of heavy metals incorporated borate based glasses 39H3BO3+30PbO+20MO+10Bi2O3 +1Dy2O3 (where M=Ca,Sr,Ba,Na and K) which are synthesized following melt quenching technique for radiation screening applications. The potentiality of glasses to withstand the penetration of fast moving neutrons is checked by various studies. Functional groups are identified through different stretching and bending modes of vibrations within the glass membrane through FTIR spectral analysis. In addition to that, other structural properties like Boron-Boron distance (dB−B), molar volume of oxygen (Vo), Oxygen Packing Density (OPD), optical basicity (Λth) and Bond density (nb) are calculated theoretically. The bonding nature (β) and nephelauxetic ratio (δ) values reveals that the glasses possess more of ionic linkages. The high density value exhibited by the Bismuth lead borate glasses indicates their capability to act as a good shielding material in reactors emitting hazardous radiation. Different moduli of elasticity (E, K, G, σ) values for the present glasses are calculated and the results reveal the enhancement in shielding performances when compared to other existing glasses and a comparative study is made on it. Optical studies are carried out and the absorption of Dy3+ions to different energy levels is observed and optical band gap (Eopt) values of the synthesized glasses are calculated along with the Urbach energy (ΔE) values. Radiation shielding properties of the produced glasses were investigated in terms of the mass attenuation coefficients (µm), transmission fraction (T), half value layer (HVL) and effective atomic number (Zeff) parameters. The results attained in the shielding study indicated that glass specimen with M = Ba exhibits enhanced shielding behavior as Ba owns high atomic number (Z) compared to other elements. Glass specimen with M = Na shows the poorest shielding characteristics due to the low Z of Na.

Effect of BaO on lead free zinc barium tellurite glass for radiation shielding materials in nuclear application

    Boonin, K.; Yasaka, P.; Limkitjaroenporn, P.; Rajaramakrishna, R.; Askin, A.; Sayyed, M.I.; Kothan, S.; Kaewkhao, J.

In this study, the zinc barium tellurite glasses (ZBaT) synthesized and inspected their radiation defensive mechanism and structural behavior. Glass composition (90-x) TeO2 - 10 ZnO - xBaO, where 25≤ x ≤ 35 (mol%) was prepared using the melt quenching technique and glass-forming pseudo-ternary diagram was discussed. Addition of BaO enhances the polarization in the present glasses there by it increases the bond length hence glass network expands resulting in volume. The mass attenuation coefficient (μm) of ZBaT glasses have been evaluated at various energies via Compton scattering technique. The results found that the μm, effective atomic number and effective electron density decrease with the increase in γ-ray energies which is in a good agreement with theoretical values attained using Geant4 and WinXCOM. At 25 mol% BaO content the glass samples show less mean free path (MFP) which were compared with other standard shield defensive materials. The obtained results reveal that the formation of non-bridging oxygens increased with higher concentration of BaO. The transmission spectra of the prepared glasses displayed optical light transparency thereby demonstrating their efficient role being transparent window when used as radiation defensive material without Pb component proving them as eco-friendly for environment.

Gamma ray shielding behavior of Li2O-doped PbO–MoO3–B2O3 glass system

Ali, Atif Mossad; Sayyed, M.I.; Rashad, M.; Kumar, Ashok; Kaur, Ramandeep; Aşkın, A.; Algarni, H.

In this work, five glasses for radiation shielding applications in the composition of (30 + x) PbO–5 MoO3–(25 − x) Li2O–40 B2O3 (where x = 0, 5, 10, 15 and 20 mol%) have been prepared. The density increases from 4.354 to 6.578 g cm−3 and the molar volume decreases from 25.144 to 22.520 cm3 with the replacement of Li2O by PbO. The indirect and direct band gap energies decrease from (2.2870–2.2297) eV and (2.9619–2.8660) eV, respectively, as lead content increases from 30 to 50 mol%. In addition, the refractive index of the samples lies between 2.6214 and 2.6429. Geant4 simulation code has been used to evaluate the gamma photon transmission through the prepared samples. Pb50Li5 sample has lower transmission fraction among the studied glasses. For the 2-cm glass thickness, the transmission fraction of Pb30Li25 sample was found to be 0.433 while at the same thickness the transmission fraction of Pb50Li5 sample is 0.265. At 1173 keV, the HVL values were found to be 1.752 cm for Pb50Li5 and 2.693 cm for Pb30Li25 glasses. At the same photon energy, the MFP values were calculated to be 2.529 cm and 3.886 cm for the Pb50Li5 and Pb30Li25 samples, respectively. Due to the higher Pb content existing in the Pb50Li5 glass, this glass effectively blocks the gamma rays compared to the other samples.

Comprehensive study on the structural, optical, physical and gamma photon shielding features of B2O3-Bi2O3-PbO-TiO2 glasses using WinXCOM and Geant4 code

    Sayyed, M.I.; El-Mesady, I.A.; Abouhaswa, A.S.; Askin, A.; Rammah, Y.S.

Glass samples of titanium-lead bismuth borate with the composition of (60B2O3 – 20Bi2O3 – (20-x)PbO – xTiO2), where 0 ≤ x ≤ 10 wt% labeled as BBPT0.0 (x = 0) to BBPT10.0 (x = 10) were synthesized. The melt quenching technique was used in the preparation. The amorphous character and vibrational groups for all samples were confirmed through XRD and FTIR measurements, respectively. The optical band gap (Eopt), Urbach's energy (Eurbach), and the optical dispersion constants have been determined using UV–Vis spectra. Results reveal that the values of the optical band gap energy exhibit a decrease with the TiO2 concentration, in contrast with Urbach's energy which displays a linear increase from 0.43 to 0.64 eV. In addition, the values of single-oscillator energy (Eo) has the same behavior of the optical energy gap (Eopt), while the dispersion energy parameter (Ed) has an inversely behavior. Mass attenuation coefficients (μ/ρ) of the investigated glasses have been computed using the Geant4 simulation toolkit and WinXCOM database software. Geant4 model of a HPGe detector has been employed to perform the Monte Carlo simulations for the glass samples with five thicknesses from 1 to 3 cm at the gamma ray energies in the range of 356–2510 keV. The transmission fractions as a function of the thickness at 356 keV photon energy for all studied glasses has been performed. Half value layer (HVL) was derived from the μ/ρ values. Results showed the studied glasses have good shielding capability according to their mass attenuation coefficients, transmission fractions and HVL values.

Investigation ofthe gamma ray shielding parameters of (100-x)[0.5Li2O–0.1B2O3–0.4P2O5]-xTeO2 glasses using Geant4 and FLUKA codes

    Aşkın, A.; Sayyed, M.I.; Sharma, Amandeep; Dal, M.; El-Mallawany, R.; Kaçal, M.R.

In the present work, the radiation shielding proeprties of lithium borophosphtellurite glass system with the composition of (100-x) [0.5Li2O-0.1B2O3–0.4P2O5]-xTeO2 (x = 0, 10, 20, 30 and 40 mol%) were reported. The mass attenuation coefficient (μ/ρ) of the selected glass system (LiBPTe0, LiBPTe10, LiBPTe20, LiBPTe30 and LiBPTe40) was calculated at 356 keV, 662 keV, 1173 keV and 1330 keV photon energies by using Geant4 and FLUKA codes and the results were compared to the values obtained theoretically using WinXcom software. The correlation theory has been used to calculate the correlation coefficients (R2) between the results from WinXcom and the both simulations codes (Geant4 and FLUKA) for each sample. Moreover, some other radiation shielding parameters such as effective atomic number, photon transmission, mean free path and half value layer were calculated. The gamma photon transmission results showed that the transmission values of the 356 keV photons are lower than those of energies 662, 1173 and 1330 keV. At 356 keV, the transmission value for LiBPTe0 (at 6 cm thickness) is found to be 0.245 while at the same energy and thickness the transmission value is 0.088 for LiBPTe40. Out of all the glasses considered in present work, LiBPTe40 possesses the highest values of effective atomic number (Zeff). The Zeff values for the present glasses are 8.02, 9.55, 11.16, 12.85 and 14.64 for LiBPTe0, LiBPTe10, LiBPTe20, LiBPTe30 and LiBPTe40 respectively at 356 keV. The mass attenuation coefficient and effetive atomic number results showed that utilization 40% mol of TeO2 significantly improves the gamma ray shielding properties of the selected glass system. The shielding effectiveness of the selected samples was compared with other reference materials namely two radiation shielding glasses and four concretes used in different shielding purposes in terms of the mean free path (MFP) at 356 keV. The results revealed that the MFP of RS-253-G18 is lower than LiBPTe0sample. Moreover, the MFP of ordinary concrete is higher than the MFP of all glasses under examination, thus the investigated tellurite glasses have better attenuation features than the ordinary concrete.

Synthesis, physical, structural and shielding properties of newly developed B2O3–ZnO–PbO–Fe2O3 glasses using Geant4 code and WinXCOM program

    Rammah, Y.S.; Askin, A.; Abouhaswa, A.S.; El-Agawany, F.I.; Sayyed, M.I.

New zinc lead borate glasses with (50B2O3–10ZnO–(40 − y) PbO)–yFe2O3: 0 ≤ y ≤ 10 wt%) composition were synthesized by the conventional melt-quench technique. The amorphous nature of the glasses was tested by using X-ray diffraction spectroscopy. FTIR spectra for the glasses were recorded in the range of 4000–400 cm−1. Physical properties of the proposed glasses were evaluated. The mass attenuation coefficients (μ/ρ) for the glasses were calculated by the Geant4 simulation toolkit code and XCOM software within the photon energy range 365–2510 keV. Different γ-ray shielding parameters such as half-value layer, tenth value layer, and transmission fraction for the proposed glasses were evaluated using the obtained values of the (μ/ρ). Results reveal that for 1 cm glass thickness, the (50B2O3–10ZnO–30PbO)–10Fe2O3 sample has the highest transmission, due to the lower amount of Pb, and thus poorer shielding capability among the other glass samples. In addition, the probabilities of γ-ray interaction with the studied glasses were investigated.

Influence of RE oxides (Eu3+, Sm3+, Nd3+) on gamma radiation shielding properties of lead fluoroborate glasses

Wagh, Akshatha; Sayyed, M.I.; Askin, A.; Özpolat, Özgür Fırat; Sakar, E.; Lakshminarayana, G.; Kamath, Sudha D.

Authors report the change in lead fluoroborate glass properties with change in RE2O3 (RE = Eu, Sm, Nd) chemical composition. The RE2O3 exhibited improvement in the radiation shielding properties of the glass samples. The gamma rays shielding capabilities of the samples were studied using the WinXcom software (for Eu2O3, Sm2O3 doped glasses) and Monte Carlo simulation (for Nd2O3 doped glasses). The results exhibited that the mass attenuation coefficient (μm), effective atomic number (Zeff), and half value layer (HVL) depends on the concentration of RE2O3 and addition of the same significantly increased the shielding capabilities of the glass samples against gamma rays. The increase in photon energy revealed the decrease in radiation shielding properties. The reported density and radiation attenuation properties of RE2O3 doped lead fluoroborate glasses are predominant in radiation shielding applications which will be useful in high strength structures. Of all the glass samples 2.5 mol% of Eu2O3, Sm2O3 and Nd2O3 doped glasses showed enhanced shielding properties.

    Structural, optical, and gamma-ray-sensing characterization of (35 − x) PbO–10 MgO–10Na2O–5 Fe2O3–10 BaO–(30 − x) B2O3 glasses

Kumar, Ashok; Ali, Atif Mossad; Sayyed, M.I.; Aşkın, A.; Rashad, M.; Algarni, H.

Amorphous PbO–MgO–Na2O–Fe2O3–BaO–B2O3 glass system has been prepared. FTIR spectra studied in the range of 400–1600 cm−1 which gives information regarding the different structural, vibration bonds. To study the various optical parameters, the UV absorption spectra are studied in the range 190–1100 nm. The photon attenuation characteristics for the current samples were studied using Geant4 simulation code. The transmission fraction (T) was calculated and the results showed that the addition of PbO decreases the values of T. For the samples which contain 55 mol% and 35 mol% of PbO, the T values are, respectively, 0.065 and 0.161 at 356 keV. High atomic number and high of lead result in lower half-value layer values for Pb55B10 glass compared to the Pb35B30 sample which has the lowest amount of Pb in its structure. At 356 keV, the tenth value layer values are 2.521 and 1.685 cm for the samples coded as Pb35B30 and Pb55B10, respectively. From the radiation-shielding parameter results, the use of high-density glasses against the penetrating gamma rays provides a better shielding performance using thinner glass layer.

An investigation on physical, structural and gamma ray shielding features of Dy3+ ions doped Telluroborate glasses

    Sathiyapriya, G.; Marimuthu, K.; Sayyed, M.I.; Askin, A.; Agar, O.

Structural, physical and gamma ray shielding properties of Dy3+ doped telluroborate glasses have been discussed. The molar volume of the glasses is proportional to the TeO2 content. The FTIR studies investigate the expansion of TeO2 content and the dynamic change of tetrahedral [BO4] units into trigonal [BO3] units. Using the absorption spectra, optical band gap (Eg) and Urbach's energy (ΔE) values are calculated. The molar volume of oxygen (VO) and boron‑boron separation (<dB–B>) values are increasing while there is a fall in oxygen packing density (OPD) from 0% to 40% of TeO2. The ionic nature of the present glasses is analyzed from the bonding parameter (δ), optical basicity (Λth), covalent and ionic characteristic factors. The gamma photon attenuation investigated employing GEANT4 code. The transmission factor (TF) shows that 0TBD sample (0 wt% of TeO2) has the highest TF, while the 4TBD sample (40 wt% of TeO2) has the lowest TF.

Physical, structural, optical, and radiation shielding properties of B2O3–Gd2O3–Y2O3 glass system

    Al-Hadeethi, Y.; Sayyed, M.I.; Kaewkhao, J.; Askin, A.; Raffah, Bahaaudin M.; Mkawi, E.M.; Rajaramakrishna, R.

In the current paper, glass samples were prepared from the composition xGd2O3–(30-x)Y2O3–70B2O3 (where x = 5, 10, 15, 20 and 25 mol%) via the technique of melt-quenching. Various optical parameters and inter-atomic separation were evaluated for the fabricated samples. The results showed that the inter-substitution of Y2O3 content in replacement with Gd2O3 content in the glass matrix shows structural variation in the glass. The density increases from 3.5521 to 4.1613 g/cm3 with increase in Gd2O3 content that signifies the role of Gd2O3 being a glass modifier. The transmission spectra of the glass sample show more than 85% transmittance suggesting their superior transparency in the visible region. Also, several important shielding parameters of the prepared glass system have been computationally determined via the Geant4 model and the results were compared with Phy-X/PDS database software. The results revealed that the mass attenuation factor (µ/ρ) obtained by utilizing the two different toolkits are in agreement. The transmission fraction and the half value layer parameters of the glass system indicate that the glass sample with higher Gd concentration provides a better gamma blocking ability thanks to the high atomic number of Gd.

Extensive study of newly developed highly dense transparent PbO-WO3-BaO-Na2O-B2O3 glasses for radiation shielding applications

Sayyed, M.I.; Aşkın, A.; Ali, Atif Mossad; Kumar, Ashok; Rashad, M.; Alshehri, Ali M.; Singh, Mandeep

Amorphous PbO – WO3 – BaO – Na2O – B2O3 glass system have fabricated using traditional melt quenching method. The XRD and FTIR spectra confirm the amorphous nature and the various structural properties of the glasses respectively. The various optical properties have been measured in the spectral range 400–4000 cm−1. Also, to understand the shielding ability of the fabricated glasses, we used the Geant4 model of a HPGe detector and WinXcom program to calculate the mass attenuation coefficient (MAC) at six energies between 356 and 2510 keV. In order to confirm the agreement between both methods, we used correlation theory and calculated the correlation coefficients (R2) for each sample. It is found that the R2 values are close to 1 for all samples. The MAC values at 356 keV for the prepared samples lies between 0.221 and 0.246 cm2/g. It is found that the usage of different concentration of PbO (from 50 to 70 mol%) affects the MAC values and thus the attenuation ability of the samples due to the heavier density of the PbO in comparison to B2O3. The effective atomic number results showed that Pb70B10 sample (contains 70 mol% of PbO) was higher than the other samples. Hence, Pb70B10 absorbs more photons than the rest of the prepared glasses.
