The development of sustainable polymer-based materials for radiation shielding has attracted increasing interest, particularly for lightweight and flexible applications. In this study, ternary nanocomposites based on poly (hydroxyalkanoate) (PHA), poly (ε-caprolactone) (PCL), and polystyrene (PS) were prepared and reinforced with cerium oxide (CeO2) nanoparticles (5–15 wt%) to enhance radiation shielding performance. Structural characterization confirmed the preservation of polymer chemical structures and the successful incorporation of crystalline CeO2, while SEM observations revealed a relatively homogeneous nanoparticle dispersion within the ternary matrix, particularly at intermediate filler loadings. Thermal analysis demonstrated enhanced thermal stability with increasing CeO2 content, as evidenced by an increase in residual mass from 0.42% for the neat blend to 11.21% for the nanocomposite containing 15 wt% CeO2, along with a shift of degradation onset temperatures toward higher values. Photon shielding performance was experimentally evaluated in the energy range of 13.37–59.54 keV. The incorporation of 15 wt% CeO2 increased the mass attenuation coefficient (MAC) from 1.277 to 12.366 cm2 g−1 at 13.37 keV, corresponding to an approximately ninefold enhancement, while significantly reducing the half-value layer (HVL) and mean free path (MFP). Neutron shielding analysis showed a slight decrease in thermal neutron attenuation due to hydrogen dilution within the polymer matrix, whereas fast neutron attenuation and neutron removal cross sections exhibited only minor variations; the fast neutron removal cross section increased modestly from 0.1014 to 0.1047 cm−1 with 15 wt% CeO2 addition. Overall, the results highlight clear structure–property–performance relationships in CeO2-reinforced PHA/PCL/PS nanocomposites, demonstrating their potential as lightweight radiation shielding materials for low energy protection with improved thermal stability and shielding efficiency.

Production of Ho2O3 and Dy2O3 rare earth oxides doped selenium thin film and investigation of surface morphology and optical properties

Aydin, Handan; Sait Kanca, M.; Kök, Mediha; Taşgin, Yahya; Tatar, Beyhan

Thin film technology aims to improve and develop the properties of materials by coating technology. In this study, thin films consisting of rare earth element and selenium semiconductor material, which have recently been preferred in technological applications due to their important properties, are examined. Selenium thin films doped with Ho2O3 and Dy2O3 rare earth oxides (REO) were fabricated on glass substrate by thermal evaporation method. The surface morphology and optical properties of the thin films were investigated. As a result of surface morphology examinations, it was determined that homogeneous thin films were obtained and the thickness of the thin films varied between 20 and 30 μm. In addition, the roughness value of the glass substrate decreased as a result of coating with doped selenium thin film. The band energy value obtained by UV-VIS measurements decreased compared to glass and was close to the selenium element value. In the comparison between selenium coatings doped with Ho2O3 and Dy2O3, a notable reduction in the Eg value was observed specifically in the Ho2O3 doped coatings.

Physical and shielding properties of Er2O3 rare earth oxide compound content on PCL/PEG blend

Taşgin, Yahya; Pekdemir, Mustafa Ersin; Yilmaz, Mücahit; Kanca, Muhammed Sait; Kök, Mediha

Rare earth elements (RRE), due to their unique magnetic, electrical, and optical properties, are an important group of elements demanded in many application areas from machine technology to the health industry. In this study, new composites were obtained by mixing Erbium oxide (Er2O3), one of the rare earth element oxides, into PCL–PEG blend, which is also an important material group, in different ratios. The characteristic functional groups of the obtained polymer blend/Er2O3 nanocomposites were determined by the ATR-IR, and as the erbium oxide ratio increased, characteristic peaks of the polymers in the blend as well as characteristic signals of the Er–O–Er bond were found. When the thermal behavior of the obtained composites was examined, it was observed that the polymer blend exhibited miscible blend properties and the melting temperature of the polymer blend increased as the Er2O3 ratio increased. In addition, it was determined that the thermal stability of the composite increased significantly. X-ray measurements of composites at room temperature support other measurement results. It was determined that the presence of Er-RRE oxide increased the crystal structure feature in the polymer blend composite. Gamma radiation shielding capabilities of polymer materials containing different erbium ratios were investigated by calculating shielding parameters such as half value layer (HVL), radiation protection efficiency (RPE), and mean free path (MFP). Cs-137 and Co-60 radioactive sources were used as gamma sources. According to the obtained measurement results, Erbium oxide increased the absorption property of the polymer composite material. Investigation of surface morphology, optical properties and the gamma radiation effect on selenium coated glass substrate containing rare earth oxide

Taşgin, Yahya; Kanca, Muhammed Sait; Kök, Mediha

In this study, in order to add different properties and functions to inorganic amorphous glasses, the applicability and effects of the thin film coating produced by thermal evaporation method were examined by metallographically imaging the effects of 3%–5% CeO2 and Tm2O3 rare earth elements (REE) oxide added to selenium to change the morphology of the glass surface. As a result of the study, it has been proved that CeO 2 and Tm2O3 added to selenium can be coated by thermal evaporation method with AFM images taken from the glass surface and metallographic analyses (SEM, EDX, Mapping). The lowest roughness value was observed in 95Se–5CeO2 coating glass substrate. In all coatings, selenium, which is the main sample, was found to be active, and XRD measurements showed that the thin films were formed by agglomeration on the (101) plane. According to UV-VIS measurements, the lowest optical band energy range was observed in the 95Se–5CeO2 coating.

Application of Local Hard Fillet Weld to Repair Damage Caused by Cavitation in Hydroelectric Power Plant

    Kahraman, Gökhan; Taşgin, Yahya

Hydroelectric power plants come into prominence worldwide day by day due to their low operating and maintenance costs, environment friendly structure and their use as renewable energy sources. In order to obtain maximum energy from such an important energy source, it is necessary to reduce downtime due to failures. One of the most important failures of hydroelectric power plants is the damage caused to the turbine wheel by cavitation. In this study, a sample with the same material as the turbine wheels of the hydroelectric power plants is provided. The effects of the hard fillet weld on the turbine wheel, which we have applied locally to this material, have been investigated both metallographically and physically. As a result of the research, it is observed that the main material and hard fillet weld are mostly compatible. The damages of the turbine wheel of the hydroelectric power plant have been repaired by applying the same method to the turbine wheel damaged by the cavitation. After 10,000 h of operation, the turbine wheel is inspected again. As a result, it has been determined that the hard fillet weld applied to the turbine wheel surface is resistant to the harmful effects of cavitation.

Identification of optimum working conditions in hydroelectric power plants for cavitation

Kahraman, Gökhan; Yücel, Halit Lütfi; Taşgin, Yahya

Turbine faults in hydroelectric power plants not only reduce the operation time of the plant, but also cause a serious loss of income. One of the most important turbine faults is the turbine wheel wear caused by the cavitation and accordingly the other machine equipment faults which cause excessive vibration. In this study, cavitation intensity that the turbines have been exposed in operating conditions has been investigated. As a result of the calculations, optimum working conditions of the units have been determined with graphs obtained in various operating conditions. The obtained data can be easily applied to all hydroelectric power plants exposed to cavitation, and safe operating conditions can be determined.
