Optimization of the adsorption of methyl green dye on almond shells using central composite design

    Tanaydin, Mehmet Kayra; Goksu, Ali

Almond shells, known as the agricultural industry’s waste, were utilized to adsorb methyl green dye from aqueous solutions. The effects of initial concentration (2–10 mg/L), the adsorbent dosage (0.1–0.5 g), shaking speed (150–250 rpm), pH (4–7), temperature (20°C–50°C), and particle size (137–892 μm) on methyl green adsorption on the almond shell were examined. The response surface methodology was used to optimize the methyl green dye’s adsorption process using the almond shell. The central composite design was utilized to obtain optimum experimental conditions. Performed experiments obtained the isotherm data, and it was analyzed by utilizing the Langmuir, Freundlich, and Temkin isotherm models. The isotherm data can be fitted well by the Langmuir model. The pseudo-second-order model can anticipate the adsorption kinetics. The thermodynamic parameters such as ΔG° ΔH°, and ΔS° were calculated and found to be –2.878, 42.12 kJ/mol, and 0.151 kJ/mol K, respectively. These values demonstrated that the present adsorption process was feasible, spontaneous, and endothermic in the temperature scope of (20°C–50°C). This study indicates that almond shells were considered an efficient adsorbent to remove from the aqueous solutions. The maximum adsorption capacity of the almond shell (1.1 mg/g) was obtained. In this system, the almond shell’s pre-activation process was not preferred because it will create an extra cost. Adsorption kinetics studies showed that the model is represented as a pseudo-second-order of adsorption data.

Dissolution kinetics of calcined ulexite in ammonium sulfate solutions

Demirkiran, Nizamettin; Tanaydin, Mehmet Kayra; Özdemir, G. Deniz Turhan

Ulexite is one of the boron minerals, which include a respectable amount of hydration water. It can be used as a raw material in the production of boron compounds. Some part of water in the composition of ulexite can be removed from the solid matrix applying dehydration treatment, and a porous structure can be obtained to increase the reaction rate. In the present study, the effect of dehydration temperature on dissolution kinetics of ulexite in ammonium sulfate solutions was researched in a batch reactor utilizing the parameters of solution concentration, solid-to-liquid ratio, stirring speed and reaction temperature. It was determined that the dissolution rate of calcined material increased with increasing solution concentration and reaction temperature and with decreasing solid-to-liquid ratio. The highest dissolution rate was attained with the sample calcined at 150 degrees C. It was found that the dissolution rate fit to the first order pseudo-homogeneous model. The activation energy of the dissolution process was estimated to be 42 kJ.mol(-1).

The wastewaters containing organic and inorganic pollutants after many industrial processes such as metal plating, mining, textile, alloy, battery and industrial chemicals, are often discharged to environment. Heavy metals among these pollutants have highly stable, toxic, non-degradable and carcinogenic characters. They affect not only ecological system, but also human health and many life forms. Therefore, these contaminants should be eliminated or reduced to allowable levels before releasing to environment. Most of heavy metals have toxic character even at low concentrations of about 0.1-0.3ppm. Treatment technologies such as filtration, ion exchange, precipitation, electrodeposition, reverse osmosis, sedimentation, and adsorption have been applied for removal of heavy metals from aqueous solutions. Adsorption is one of the most common and widely applied methods to eliminate the metal ions from waste solutions because of its simplicity and cost effectiveness. Activated carbon, clay minerals, ion exchange resins and various agricultural residues can be used as adsorbent materials in this process [1-3].

Göksu, Ali; Tanaydin, Mehmet Kayra; Akdemir, A.O.; Ekinci, A.; Han, I.; Oztekin, A.; Set, E.; Dadasoglu, F.; Karagoz, K.

Almond shells are considered as agricultural waste. In this study almond shells were chosen as effective adsorbents for removing Crystal Violet (CV) from dye solutions. The experimental data was analyzed via the Langmuir, Freudlich and Tempkin isotherm models to obtain isotherm model for the system and the data shows that the Langmuir isotherm model fitted best. Also, the thermodynamics parameters such as ΔH0, ΔG0 and ΔS0 were investigated. The results of the study show that almond shells are efficient and advantageous economically for removing CV from aqueous solutions. The maximum adsorption capacity was found to be 1.1375mg/g on almond shell. Adsorption kinetic studies indicate that the adsorption data can be represented by a pseudo second order model.

Adsorption of hazardous crystal violet dye by almond shells and determination of optimum process conditions by taguchi method

    Goksu, Ali; Tanaydin, Mehmet Kayra

Almond shells are classified as an agricultural waste of the food industry. In this study, almond shells were prepared as efficient adsorbents for removing Crystal Violet (CV) dye. The effects of adsorbent dosage, pH, initial concentration, shaking speed, temperature and particle size were studied. The Taguchi L25 experimental design method was used to obtain the optimum experimental condition. The data were analyzed using the signal to noise (S/N) ratio and analysis of variance (ANOVA) for removal of CV from aqueous solutions. The isotherm data were obtained from the experiments performed. The obtained isotherm data were analyzed via the Langmuir, Freundlich and Temkin isotherm models of which the Langmuir isotherm model fitted the best. Thermodynamic parameters such as ΔH°, ΔS° and ΔG° were calculated and the results were 18.5 kJ/mol, 0.057 kJ/mol K and –1.514 kJ/mol at 25°C, respectively. The results of this study indicate that almond shells are efficient adsorbents for removing Crystal Violet (CV) from aqueous solutions. The maximum adsorption capacity was found to be 1.075 mg/g on the almond shells. Adsorption kinetics studies showed that adsorption data can be modeled by a pseudo-second-order model. The optimum conditions for the adsorption on almond shells were found to be: adsorbent dosage = 0.5 g, concentration = 4 ppm, pH = 6, shaking speed = 200 rpm and shaking time = 180 min.

    Demirkiran, Nizamettin; Tanaydin, Mehmet Kayra

In this study, cupric oxide powder was prepared from copper powder using a thermal oxidation method. The copper powder was produced by electroless deposition method using ascorbic acid as a chemical reducing agent. The oxide powder product was synthesized at 500A degrees C for 5 h. The metallic copper and oxide powder were characterized using X-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscopy. Based on results from these analytical techniques, it was determined that cupric oxide was successfully synthesized from the thermal treatment of copper powder and was in agglomerated state.
