Yayla, Nihal; Albayrak, M Gökhan; Güler, Ömer; Sen Baykal, Duygu; Alkarrani, Hessa; ALMisned, Ghada; Issa, Bashar; Tekin, H.O.

This study investigates the multi-dimensional effects of increasing Gd2O3 reinforcement on the structural, mechanical, and gamma-ray shielding properties of AISI 316L stainless steel composites. Samples with varying Gd2O3 content (1%, 5%, 10%, and 20% by weight) were synthesized and characterized through x-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS) to assess the microstructural changes and homogeneity of Gd2O3 dispersion after mechanical milling. The addition of Gd2O3 significantly enhanced the gamma-ray shielding properties, with the mass attenuation coefficient (MAC), linear attenuation coefficient (LAC), and half-value layer (HVL) improving as the Gd2O3 content increased, particularly in low to moderate photon energy ranges. Simultaneously, the elastic modulus exhibited an inverse relationship, decreasing with higher Gd2O3 content due to the lower stiffness of gadolinium compared to iron. Transmission factor (TF) values also decreased, indicating enhanced photon attenuation with higher Gd2O3 content across various thicknesses. The experimental characterization confirmed improved Gd2O3 dispersion and material uniformity after mechanical milling, contributing to the composites’ superior radiation shielding performance. It can be concluded that Gd2O3-reinforced AISI 316L stainless steel composites offer a promising balance between enhanced radiation shielding properties and reduced mechanical stiffness, making them ideal candidates for applications requiring efficient and adaptable radiation protection especially for portable and non-structural shielding applications.

ALMisned, Ghada; Susoy, Gulfem; Baykal, Duygu Sen; Kilic, G.; Güler, Ömer; Tekin, H.O.

This comprehensive study investigates the radiation attenuation properties of various bismuth (Bi) and lead (Pb) based alloys, with a focus on identifying superior shielding materials for nuclear safety and industrial radiation protection. The research encompasses an in-depth analysis of seven alloys, namely GTSB5, Sn%40Bi, Bi50Sn50, A1, PbAl-4, Safe Alloy, and P1, assessing their efficacy in gamma-ray and neutron attenuation. Utilizing some computational tools, various parameters such as mass and linear attenuation coefficients, half and tenth value layer values, effective atomic and electron numbers, buildup factors, and transmission values were evaluated. Our findings highlight Alloy P1's outstanding performance, attributed to its high density (11.05 g/cm3) and optimized elemental composition, including Silver (Ag). In addition, P1 demonstrates exceptional gamma-ray attenuation across multiple energy spectra and superior neutron shielding capabilities, evidenced by its significant fast neutron removal cross-section (∑R, 0.12003 1/cm). The study revealed that the addition of Ag enhances the photon and beta particle absorption capacity, positioning P1 as a promising material in radiation shielding applications. The correlations between alloy density and gamma-ray shielding properties were particularly notable, with P1's density contributing to its enhanced attenuation capabilities. Furthermore, P1's lower half value layers (1.14469 cm) and tenth value layers (3.80256 cm) at 15 MeV indicate its efficiency in reducing radiation intensity with minimal material thickness.

Özkul, İskender; Karaduman, Oktay; Şimşek, Tuncay; Şimşek, Telem; Canbay, Canan Aksu; Güler, Ömer; ALMisned, Ghada; Tekin, H.O.

This study systematically investigates the influence of Cr and Mn additions on the structural, magnetic, and radiation shielding properties of NiFeGaCo-based ferromagnetic high-entropy shape memory alloys (FHESMAs) synthesized via the arc melting method. The fabricated NiFeGaCo, NiFeGaCoCr, and NiFeGaCoMn alloys were comprehensively characterized in terms of their phase formation, microstructure, martensitic transformation behavior, and magnetic performance. The results demonstrated that Mn addition significantly improved the magnetic properties, yielding the highest saturation magnetization (56.64 emu/g) and lowest coercivity (5.55 Oe), making NiFeGaCoMn highly suitable for soft magnetic applications. In contrast, Cr addition provided moderate magnetic behavior but enhanced structural stability with the largest crystallite size and lowest lattice strain. Moreover, gamma-ray and fast neutron shielding investigations revealed that the Cr-containing alloy exhibited superior performance in terms of linear attenuation coefficient, half-value layer, effective electron density, and fast neutron removal cross-section values, while Mn addition slightly reduced these shielding capabilities. It can be concluded that Cr addition offers a balanced advantage in designing FHESMAs with combined magnetic sensitivity and radiation shielding efficiency, whereas Mn addition is more effective for maximizing magnetic performance with a compromise in shielding characteristics.

High Entropy Alloys (HEAs) hold considerable potential for sophisticated nuclear applications, offering a vast spectrum of compositional tuning to enhance mechanical properties at high temperatures, as well as to increase resistance to radiation and corrosion. This study explores the suitability of Cantor HEAs, specifically the CoCrFeMnNi matrix enriched with elements such as Zr, Nb, Mo, Hf, Ta, and W, for nuclear applications. These elements were selected for their high atomic numbers and neutron capture cross-sections, vital for enhancing gamma-ray and neutron shielding properties. Utilizing advanced computational and theoretical methods, the elastic modulus of these alloys was theoretically estimated while their radiation attenuation capabilities were evaluated through different Monte Carlo simulation codes. CoCrFeMnNiW demonstrated the highest elastic modulus (340.9 GPa), indicating significant mechanical robustness. The addition of W resulted in superior gamma-ray attenuation, with the lowest gamma-ray transmission factors and highest neutron shielding effectiveness among the studied alloys. The calculated mass attenuation coefficients and effective removal cross-sections values demonstrate the potential of these HEAs to provide effective radiation shielding. Our results showed a clear correlation between the elastic modulus and radiation attenuation properties, suggesting that mechanical stiffness does not compromise shielding capabilities. The comprehensive analysis of thermodynamic and structural parameters, including entropy of mixing, mixing enthalpy, and Valence Electron Concentration (VEC), provided essential insights into phase stability and microstructural characteristics. It can be concluded that CoCrFeMnNiW and its related Cantor HEAs as promising materials for advancing nuclear technology, offering a new horizon for safer and more efficient nuclear systems.

Yayla, Nihal; Albayrak, M.Gökhan; Güler, Ömer; Baykal, Duygu Sen; Alkarrani, Hessa; ALMisned, Ghada; Zakaly, Hesham M.H.; Tekin, H.O.

This study explores the structural, mechanical, and radiation shielding properties of 316L stainless steel composites reinforced with varying weight percentages of Pr2O3. The aim is to enhance radiation attenuation capabilities while maintaining structural integrity for nuclear applications. The composites were fabricated using the mechanical alloying method, followed by detailed characterization through X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, and energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy. Key radiation shielding parameters, including mass attenuation coefficient, linear attenuation coefficient, half-value layer, and effective atomic number, and transmission factor values were analysed using theoretical and computational models. Additionally, elastic modulus calculations were performed to assess mechanical properties. The results indicate that incorporating Pr2O3 significantly enhances shielding performance. The 316L-SS%20Pr2O3 composite exhibited the highest mass and linear attenuation coefficients values, with a notable reduction in half value layer values compared to the unreinforced 316L stainless steel. At lower photon energies, effective atomic number improved by 39.3 % for the 316L-SS%20Pr2O3 sample, while neutron shielding efficiency also increased. However, the elastic modulus decreased with higher Pr2O3 content, reflecting a trade-off between mechanical stiffness and radiation shielding efficiency. The findings demonstrate that 316L-SS%20Pr2O3 is a promising material for applications requiring superior radiation shielding, particularly in environments where mechanical load is secondary.

To qualify for nuclear applications, materials must meet specific criteria, including mechanical properties, high-temperature behavior, corrosion resistance, and high-temperature oxidation resistance. High Entropy Alloys (HEAs) are particularly suitable for these applications due to their unique properties. Consequently, we conducted a theoretical and simulation-based approaches to assess some critical properties including radiation shielding properties of some quinary FeNiCoCr HEAs. In this study, we focused on quinary FeNiCoCr HEAs, whose corrosion properties have been previously examined in the literature. We investigated the thermodynamic and radiation shielding properties of HEAs with sixteen different compositions. Our methodology included evaluating thermodynamic parameters such as Mixing Entropy (∆Smix) and Mixing Enthalpy (∆Hmix), as well as structural characteristics like Valence Electron Concentration (VEC) and Atomic Size Difference (δ). This allowed us to systematically deduce the phase behavior and stability of various HEAs. Through computational modeling, we assessed the radiation shielding capabilities of these alloys, particularly their effectiveness in attenuating gamma ray and fast neutrons. The results identified FeNiCoCrW as the alloy with the lowest fast neutron removal cross-section values, highlighting its potential for nuclear applications. Its high melting point and the synergistic interplay between its elemental composition and thermodynamic properties suggest broad applicability in extreme environments. Thus, FeNiCoCrW emerges as a promising HEA with multifunctional capabilities, warranting further exploration and potential integration into advanced engineering solutions.

We report a comprehensive investigation on customization process of Oxide Dispersion-Strengthened alloys through Sm2O3, Pr2O3, and Er2O3 incorporation into 316L stainless steel matrix in terms of a desired enhancement in structural, physical, and nuclear radiation shielding properties. Oxide powders are incorporated into 316L stainless steel powder all with the same purity of 99.5%. These were Erbium oxide (Er2O3), Praseodymium oxide (Pr2O3), and Samarium oxide (Sm2O3). First, X-Ray diffraction and Scanning Electron Microscope/Energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy analyses are conducted in order to investigate their physical and structural properties. Next, two different experimental setups are employed using a133Ba and 241Am/Be sources for the measurements of gamma-ray and neutron transmission properties of Oxide Dispersion-Strengthened alloys. The maximum density increment is achieved through Er2O3 compared to other reinforced oxides. The detector counting value reached its minimum level when a 5% Er2O3 oxide dispersion was introduced into the 316L SS matrix. Similarly, the most significant degree of photon absorption, the highest values of mass attenuation coefficient, lowest half value layer, and most effective atomic number, were all attained by the same sample. Based on the findings derived from the investigation, it can be concluded that incorporating Er2O3 oxide into 316L steel can be considered as a viable option in terms of enhancing the critical properties of Oxide Dispersion-Strengthened alloys for extreme conditions such as nuclear reactors and other similar fields, where the behavioral attributes of the utilized materials are at utmost importance.

ALMisned, Ghada; Susoy, Gulfem; Sen Baykal, Duygu; Alkarrani, Hessa; Güler, Ömer; Tekin, H.O.

This investigation assesses the gamma-ray and neutron attenuation properties of various alloys, including Pb90Cu10, A5, Manganin-R, Cu0.2Ag0.8, SA4, and W-based, to uncover efficient and cost-effective radiation shielding materials. Our study centers on alloys featuring elements such as lead, molybdenum, silver, and tungsten, selected for their unique protective qualities against radiation. Employing computational methods to evaluate critical parameters like mass attenuation coefficients, half-value layers, linear attenuation coefficients, and effective atomic numbers, transmission factor, we found the W-based alloy to exhibit exceptional shielding properties, primarily due to its tungsten content. Interestingly, this alloy also demonstrated the highest elastic modulus among the samples studied, indicating a potential synergy between an alloy's mechanical strength and its radiation shielding effectiveness. It can be concluded that alloys with higher elastic moduli not only offer better resistance to radiation-induced deformations, enhancing shielding, but also underscore the need for further research on alloys that balance performance, affordability, and environmental impact. The findings underscore the dual importance of composition and mechanical properties in advancing radiological safety and suggest continued investigation into the sustainability and practicality of effective shielding materials.

Oxide Dispersion Strengthened (ODS) materials are known for their exceptional performance in high-temperature and radiation environments. This study explores the radiation shielding properties of 316L Stainless Steel reinforced with TiZrNbHfTaOx High-Entropy Oxide (HEO). By integrating HEOs into the 316L stainless steel matrix, we aim to enhance its structural and radiation shielding properties. The HEO was synthesized using high-energy ball milling and oxidation processes, followed by thorough characterization using X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and energy-dispersive spectroscopy (EDS). Our results indicate significant improvements in both gamma-ray and neutron shielding properties. The 316L SS samples reinforced with 20 % HEO exhibited the highest mass attenuation coefficients (MAC), lowest half-value layers (HVL), and highest effective atomic numbers (Zeff) across all tested photon energies. These enhancements are attributed to the high atomic number elements and unique synergistic effects of HEOs. Neutron shielding was evaluated through equivalent dose rate measurements, with the 20 % HEO sample demonstrating the highest absorbed dose rate percentage and superior neutron interaction cross-sections. Benchmarking against standard materials confirmed the superior performance of HEO-reinforced 316L SS, making it a promising candidate for advanced radiation shielding in nuclear reactors and other high-radiation environments. Our findings suggest that HEO reinforcement not only improves mechanical properties but also significantly enhances the radiation protection capabilities of 316L stainless steel.

This study explores the development and comprehensive characterization of Al6061-Gd₂O₃ composites, designed to enhance radiation shielding and mechanical properties for critical applications in environments exposed to ionizing radiation. The purpose of this research is to assess the effectiveness of Gd2O3 as a reinforcing material for Al6061, with the aim of creating a dual-function composite that combines structural integrity with superior gamma-ray and neutron attenuation capabilities. Using X-ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM), we analyzed the microstructural effects of varying Gd2O3 content, observing homogeneous dispersion at low concentrations and clustering at higher levels. Mechanical properties demonstrated that increased Gd2O3 content reduces the elastic modulus, indicating a trade-off between stiffness and shielding efficiency. Radiation shielding parameters, including Transmission Factor (TF), mass attenuation coefficient (MAC), and Fast Neutron Removal Cross Section (FNRCS), were evaluated through Phy-X/PSD and PHITS Monte Carlo simulations. Results indicate that Gd2O3 reinforcement significantly improves gamma-ray and neutron shielding, particularly at higher concentrations, making the composite viable for non-structural applications prioritizing radiation protection. The findings from this study highlight the potential of Gd2O3-reinforced Al6061 composites to serve as effective shielding materials in environments where radiation exposure is a primary concern.
