Changes in common carp (Cyprinus carpio) sperm quality and membrane lipid composition related to cryopreservation by Tribulus terrestris; [Alterações na qualidade do esperma e na composição lipídica da membrana da carpa comum (Cyprinus carpio) relacionadas à criopreservação por Tribulus terrestris]

Docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) was the major polyunsaturated fatty acid (PUFA) in the sperm plasma membrane, and the levels of PUFAs decreased in treated groups during the cryopreservation process. The supplementation of TT (Tribulus terrestris) to Cyprinus carpio sperm at 200 µg∙L-1 positively affected the maintenance of motility parameters and FAs levels after the freeze-thaw cycle, and TT can be used as an herbal medicine instead of synthetic pharmaceuticals to improve the productive performance in aquaculture.

Freshwater snails are a nutritious food source, providing vital amino acids, minerals, and protein with low lipid levels. Hence, the adaptation ability, growth rate, fatty acid (FA) profile, and shell content of Viviparus contectus were determined. Biometric measurements were recorded for 6 months. Over the 6-month cultivation period, specific growth rates were recorded as 0.32% · day-1 for shell length and 0.92% · day-1 for body weight. The FA profile of the freshwater snail included a total of 32 compounds with saturated, monounsaturated, and polyunsaturated FAs represented by 13, 10, and 9 types, respectively. Monounsaturated fatty acids (MUFAs) exhibited the highest concentration, followed by saturated fatty acids (SFAs) s at 35.14% and polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) at 14.57%. Stearic acid (C18:0), erucic acid (C22:1 n-9), and arachidonic acid (C20:4 n-6) were determined as the most abundant FAs within the saturated, monounsaturated, and polyunsaturated FAs classes, respectively. The energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy spectra analysis revealed that the shell powder composition consisted of the elements, such as carbon, oxygen, calcium, iron, manganese, and silicium. Overall, V. contectus showed a clear increase in growth over the cultivation period, and future studies are needed to obtain the best culture conditions and intensive production of the species.

The profile of fatty acids in the gametes of brook trout (Salvelinus fontinalis) during the spawning period under culture conditions; [Perfil de ácidos grasos en gametos de trucha de arro yo (Salvelinus fontinalis) cultivada en época de desove]

The fertilization and subsequently embryo and larvae development are linked to gamete quality and FA (fatty acid) content is one of the specific factors affecting egg or sperm quality. Hence, FA profile of gametes (egg and sperm) was documented in brook trout (Sa lve linus fontinalis) under cultivation. FAs were detected and measured using gas chromatography. These results indicated that a total of 26 and 22 FAs were determined in egg and sperm, respectively. The levels of PUFAs were determined in nearly identical quantities in both egg (47.57%) and sperm (47.53%). DHA (Docosahexaenoic acid), LA (Linoleic acid), EPA (Eicosapentaenoic acid) and ARA (Arachidon ic acid) were predominant PUFAs for egg and sperm. Interestingly, vaccenic acid (C18:1 n-11) (24.07%) was major FAs in egg. In conclusion, the analysis of fatty acids in broodstock gametes contributes valuable insights into the dietary requirements necessary for effective aquaculture breeding programs.

Identification and Quantification of Fatty Acid Profile of Muscle and Gametes in Threatened Abant Trout (Salmo abanticus) from Wild

Özçiçek, Esin; Kocabaş, Filiz Kutluyer; Kocabaş, Mehmet; Yilmaz, Ökkeş

Abstract: As an important challenge restricting hatchery production, gamete quality and subsequent larvae and juvenile are influenced by broodstock nutritional status (i.e., protein, essential amino acids, fatty acid profile and minerals). Hence, the fatty acid (FA) profiles of muscle and gametes in threatened Abant trout (Salmo abanticus) from wild was elucidated and quantitated using the gas chromatography. Our results indicated that the saturated fatty acids (SFAs) in muscle and sperm (38.00 and 60.98%) of S. abanticus occurred in higher quantities than unsaturated fatty acids. The egg of S. abanticus in the wild is characterized by high (mostly n-6 HUFA, 33.59%). Tricosanoic acid (C23:0) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA, C22:6 n-3) were not determined in sperm of S. abanticus. Overall, the current study provides FA composition in the reproduction cells and muscle of mature S. abanticus and the gametes and muscle had similar general FA profiles with the dominance of C18:1 n-9 (Oleic acid), C16:0 (Palmitic acid), C4:0 (Butyric acid), C18:2 n-6 (Linoleic acid, LA) and C20:5 n-3 (Eicosapentaenoic acid, EPA).

Seasonal changes in fatty acid profile of the freshwater snail Viviparus contectus (Millet, 1813) from lake habitat

Özçiçek, Esin; Kutluyer Kocabaş, Filiz; Kocabaş, Mehmet; Yilmaz, Ökkeş

The freshwater snail, Viviparus contectus, is an important shellfish owing to its nutritional composition (i.e., high amounts of protein, essential amino acids, fatty acid profile and minerals) and its promise as a candidate for the treatment of some diseases in traditional medicine. Hence, the seasonal changes in the fatty acid (FA) profile of Viviparus contectus caught from Demirköprü Dam Lake were determined in this study. Saturated fatty acid (SFAs) (64.54–80.39% of total fatty acids) had the highest concentration followed by polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) (10.63–21.83%) and monounsaturated fatty acids (MUFAs) (6.57–10.13%). Stearic acid (C18:0) was the major SFA while arachidonic acid (C20:4 n−6) was the major PUFA. The season significantly affected the FA profile of V. contectus while no significant difference was determined between seasons with respect to tissue MUFAs levels. A higher level of total SFAs was detected during spring (80.39%) while a higher proportion of MUFAs was detected during the winter (10.13%). The total amounts of PUFAs were highest in winter (21.83%). Overall, V. contectus has nutritional value. However, V. contectus caught in autumn may be nutritionally the most valuable for human consumption due to higher eicosapentaenoic acid 20:5 n−3 and docosahexaenoic acid contents.
