Karaduman, Oktay
Rare earth compounds, including lanthanide hydroxides, have been greatly interested for their promising uses, such as in optoelectronics or photonics, due to their unique electronic and optical transitions properties based on their 4f electron shells. In this work, for the first time new transparent flower-like lanthanum(III)hydroxide (La(OH)3) with borate (LaB3O6) composite nanosheets having a semiconducting band gap suitable for optoelectronics were synthesized by a very simple one-step solvothermal method from a mixture of pure lanthanum oxide and boron without using water or any acidic solvent or surfactant. The practical synthesis was made for two different solvothermal time durations. The synthesized nanocomposites were investigated by XRD, FIB-SEM imaging, EDS, FTIR, UV-vis absorbance, Raman, Ellipsometry, and TG-DTA analyses. The pure precursors lanthanum oxide (La2O3) and boron converted to La(OH)3 and LaB3O6. EDS elemental mapping showed the homogeneous distribution of elements in the nanocomposites. A strong deep-UV absorbance band was detected. The very low reflectance and excellent visible transmittance (exceeding 86% for the sample with a longer solvothermal process time) reaching infrared region were achieved. The direct and indirect band gap energies were estimated by the Tauc plot method for both of the composite samples. Adding boron reduced the literature given direct band gap value (around 4.5-5.5 eV) of pure La(OH)3. DTA and TGA results revealed the steps of mass losses, including decomposition of La(OH)3. FTIR analyses confirmed the presence of the formed compounds. All results showed that the La(OH)3+LaB3O6 nanocomposites can be suitably used in related applications, including electro-optic, photonic, solar cell, catalysts etc.

Unal, Asuman; Hillman, A. Robert; Ryder, Karl S.; Cihangir, Salih
Although the World Health Organization (WHO) recommends a limit of 1.5 mg l-1 fluoride ions in drinking water, this is not satisfied in many parts of the world. When this limit is exceeded, the electrochemically switched ion-exchange (ESIX) technique (mainly based on conductive polymers) has been identified as a promising method for removing the excess fluoride ions. The present study aimed to develop an efficient method based on the ESIX technique by using poly(aniline-co-o-aminophenol) copolymer to extract fluoride ions. Electrochemical quartz crystal microbalance (EQCM) and acoustic admittance data were utilized to assay the synthetic efficiency of copolymer deposition, and to evaluate the dependence of the defluoridation process on the proportions of the monomers in the copolymer matrix and on film thickness. The resulting films were characterised by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and scanning electrochemical microscopy (SEM) techniques. For optimized co-monomer ratio in the feedstock, poly(aniline-co-o-aminophenol) at an applied potential of 0.30 V showed excellent performance for fluoride removal from water at pH 6.6, to the extent of 20 (mg F-) (g polymer)-1. Comparison of the performance of ESIX using poly(aniline-co-o-aminophenol) with that of other techniques and materials reveal that it has significant potential for water defluoridation.

Korunur, Murat
Reconstruction process of scalar field models (quintessence, tachyon, dilaton and K-essence), which can be performed by making use of some dark energy density definitions such as holographic, Ricci, new agegraphic and ghost types proposals, has been an interesting and very attractive area to many physicists in literature. In this work, in a five-dimensional framework, we establish a correspondence between the quintessence, tachyon and the dilaton type scalar field definitions and the generalized ghost dark energy model by considering the extended form of the Kaluza-Klein (EKK) gravity. Accordingly, we numerically study the associated equation of state parameters, as well as their kinetic energy and scalar potential terms.

Aǧar, Salih; Tosun, Nihat
High cutting force and high cutting tool-chip interface temperature occur during machining of high strength materials like AISI 52100 by using conventional turning method and this makes to the difficult machining operation. Besides, in conventional turning (CT) of these materials, which has high abrasion resistance and hardness properties, an additional process such as grinding is required to achieve the desired surface quality. Ultrasonic assisted turning (UAT) method has been widely used in the machining industry in recent years, as it exhibits better surface quality, lower cutting forces, and cutting temperature than the CT method. This paper focused on experimentally and statistically determining the effects of different cutting parameters and cooling conditions (dry and minimum quantity lubrication-MQL) on surface roughness, workpiece surface texture, tangential direction cutting force, and cutting tool-workpiece interface temperature in the machining of AISI 52100 material by using UAT and CT methods. The experimental results revealed that significant improvements determined in the cutting forces and the surface roughness occurred in UAT compared to CT in all the cooling conditions. However, the increasing cutting speeds caused to observe higher interface temperature values in dry turning by the UAT method. Variance Analysis (ANOVA) was carried out to determine the significance grade of independent variables on dependent variables. According to ANOVA results, while the cutting speed is the most important factor on the surface roughness and the cutting zone temperature, and the cooling method is the most important factor on the cutting force. The effects of turning methods on corresponding surface topography, including surface defects, were evaluated. It is determined that in the surface topography analysis, feed marks are the main texture of the workpiece in the CT method while micro-level indentations and protrusions occurred on the workpiece surface in the UAT method.
