Adsorption of Reactive Red 120 dye from aqueous solutions using sepiolite clay with a channel-structured morphology: Mechanism, kinetics, isotherm, and thermodynamic studies

    Fırat, Tülay

The effective treatment of dye-containing wastewater remains a major environmental challenge due to the high stability and solubility of reactive dyes. In this study, the adsorption behavior of Reactive Red 120 (RR120), an anionic reactive azo dye, from aqueous solutions was investigated using natural sepiolite clay possessing a channel-structured morphology. Batch adsorption experiments were performed to evaluate the effects of contact time (1–200 min), initial dye concentration (50–500 mg L−1), adsorbent dosage (0.1–1.5 g), solution pH (2–10), and temperature (25–50°C). The adsorption equilibrium was reached within approximately 75 min. The Langmuir isotherm provided the best fit to the equilibrium data, yielding a maximum monolayer adsorption capacity of 168.4 mg g−1 at 298 K. Thermodynamic analysis revealed that the adsorption process was spontaneous and endothermic, with an activation energy of 32.41 kJ mol−1. Adsorption kinetics were analyzed using pseudo-first-order, pseudo-second-order, and intraparticle diffusion models, while equilibrium data were evaluated using Langmuir, Freundlich, and Temkin isotherm models. The kinetic data were best described by the pseudo-second-order model, while thermodynamic analysis revealed that the adsorption process was spontaneous and endothermic. FTIR and XRD analyses further supported the important role of the channel-structured framework of sepiolite in RR120 adsorption. Unlike many clay-based adsorbents that require chemical modification, natural sepiolite exhibited high adsorption performance due to its intrinsic fibrous morphology, nano-channel structure, and high surface area. These findings demonstrate that natural sepiolite is a promising, low-cost, and sustainable adsorbent for the treatment of dye-contaminated wastewater.

The Extraction of Rare-Earth Elements (REEs) from Spent Nickel–Metal Hydride (Ni–MH) Batteries by Bifunctional Ionic Liquids (Bif-ILs): Process Optimization and Kinetics Modeling

    Erust, Ceren

The cathode material of nickel–metal hydride (Ni–MH) batteries includes nickel, cobalt, and rare-earth elements (REEs) such as La, Ce, Nd, and Pr, which are among the critical raw materials (CRMs). Ionic liquids as the environmentally friendly approaches are proposed by various investigations for the extraction of critical metals from spent Ni–MH batteries. In this study, three different Bifunctional Ionic Liquids (Bif-ILs) were designed for comparative studies, namely Aliquat 336–Cyanex 272 (AL–CY), Aliquat 336–PC88A (AL–PC), and Aliquat 336–D2EHPA (AL–D2). The extraction results indicated that temperature has a direct effect on the extraction of critical metals in the presence of all Bif-ILs. Among three types of Bif-ILs, AL–D2 has an optimal extraction power (La: 98.8%, Ce: 94.2%, Nd: 99.2%, and Pr: 98.4%) after precipitation of 99.99% of Ni and Co. Furthermore, kinetics modeling is used for reaction mechanisms investigation. Results indicated that the mixed controlled model by shrinking core model (diffusion controlled and chemical reaction controlled) was the best model fitted to all data (coefficient of determination (R2) > 0.90). according to the Arrhenius equation, activation energies for all REEs in the presence of all Bif-ILs are between 13 and 42 kJ/mol that reflects a mixed controlled reaction.

Determination of Optimum Process Conditions by Central Composite Design Method and Examination of Leaching Kinetics of Smithsonite Ore Using Nitric Acid Solution

Tanaydın, Mehmet Kayra; Bakıcı Tanaydın, Zümra; Demirkıran, Nizamettin

The leaching behavior of Tunceli smithsonite ore in nitric acid was evaluated in two study steps including optimization of leaching process and kinetics modeling. The individual and synergistic effects of effective parameters such as nitric acid concentration, solid-to-liquid ratio, stirring speed, and temperature on the dissolution rate of zinc were investigated using central composite design. Four factors including temperature (30–50 °C), nitric acid concentration (0.2–0.5 mol/L), stirring speed (350–600 rpm), and solid-to-liquid ratio (0.004–0.01 g/L) were investigated. The dissolution percent of zinc (97%) was obtained in 120 min of leaching time: acid concentration 0.5 mol/L, temperature 50 °C, stirring speed 500 rpm, and solid–liquid ratio 2/500 g/mL at the optimum conditions obtained using the central composite design. The dissolution kinetics of smithsonite was examined according to heterogenous models and it was found that the dissolution rate was controlled by ash layer diffusion process. It was found that the leaching rate increased with increasing temperature, stirring speed, and acid concentration as well as decrescent particle size and solid/liquid ratio. The trial data were analyzed by statistical and graphical methods and the activation energy of this leaching process was determined to be 28.63 kJ·mol−1. Investigation of selective leaching and kinetics of copper from malachite ore in aqueous perchloric acid solutions

    Tanaydın, Mehmet Kayra; Demirkıran, Nizamettin

In this study, the leaching kinetics of malachite in perchloric acid solutions was investigated. The dissolution behaviors of copper, zinc, and iron in the ore matrix were determined at different acid concentrations and reaction temperatures. It was observed that the concentration of perchloric acid had a major effect on the dissolution of copper, zinc, and iron. It was determined that the effect of temperature on the dissolution of these species was not as significant as concentration impact. The results obtained shown that copper in the ore matrix was completely leached while zinc and iron were partially dissolved in perchloric acid solutions. In addition, the effects of the acid concentration, reaction temperature, stirring speed, particle size, and solid-to-liquid ratio on the leaching of malachite were researched. In these experiments, it was observed that the leaching rate of copper increased with increasing solution concentration, stirring speed, and reaction temperature, and with decreasing solid-to-liquid ratio and particle size. A kinetic analysis was performed, and it was found that the rate of leaching reaction obeyed the mixed kinetic control model in the unsteady state. The activation energy of the leaching process was calculated to be 34.69 kJ/mol.

Exploring thermodynamics and kinetic parameters of immobilized catalase enzyme via adsorption on krill clay

Nas, Mehmet Salih; Gür, Aycan; Gür, Tugba; Yönten, Vahap

The thermodynamic parameters and immobilization kinetics of catalase enzyme via adsorption onto krill clay were performed in aqueous solution in batch system. The adsorbent was characterized by X-ray fluorescence, scanning electron microscope and Brunauer-Emmett-Teller N-2 adsorption measurements. The effect of some parameters to the adsorption process such as contact time, stirring speed, initial enzyme concentration, initial ionic strength, temperature and pH were analyzed. Maximum adsorption capacity (q(m)) showed a great dependence on pH and initial enzyme concentration. It was found at pH 5.5, and initial enzyme concentration, 0.0075 g L-1 values. Pseudo-first-order, pseudo-second-order and intraparticle diffusion were used to fit the kinetics data on kinetic models. Furthermore, thermodynamic activation parameters such as enthalpy, entropy, Gibbs free energy and activation energy (Delta H degrees, Delta S degrees, Delta G degrees and E-a) which reveal that catalase enzyme adsorption occur spontaneously and in endothermic nature were determined. The obtained results confirmed that the applicability of krill clay is an efficient immobilizing supporter for catalase enzyme and krill clay material can be used as a very effective adsorbent in immobilization of this enzyme from aqueous solutions.
