Gahlouz, Ibtissem; Guemmour, Mohamed Boutkhil; Chellil, Sadek; Chellil, Ahmed; Houari, Amin; Aribi, Chouaib; Polat, Alper; Adjout, Warda; Bey, Mohamed

Purpose – This study aims to design a damage detection and characterization system (targeting cracks and delamination) for aeronautical composite structures. Design/methodology/approach – This methodology relies on a multidisciplinary approach combining polymer-reinforced/metallic carbon fiber hybrid structures with an integrated network of PZT sensors. It leverages experimental data and employs advanced signal processing and imaging techniques to monitor structural integrity and assess the severity of damage. Findings – Verified experimental results confirm the method's reliability in real-life situations. Research limitations/implications – Research Limits: “The primary challenges involve signal processing complexity due to the hybrid nature of AL7075-T6 and CFRP materials, as well as the potential influence of environmental factors (temperature, pressure) on PZT sensor reliability”. Research Implications: “This work enables a shift toward condition-based maintenance, significantly reducing operational costs while enhancing structural safety and extending the service life of critical aerospace and maritime assets.” Practical implications – This study enables a shift from scheduled to real-time structural monitoring. There is a drastic reduction in inspection time and aircraft downtime. Monitoring the fatigue of hybrid AL/CFRP structures helps to safely extend their service life. The study helps in providing precise diagnostics to optimize repair strategies and minimize human error. Social implications – There is a drastic reduction of structural failure risks through early-stage damage detection. Cost savings in maintenance can lead to more affordable air travel for the general public. The study helps in promoting a circular economy by safely extending the lifespan of complex structures and reducing material waste and also in shifting maintenance roles toward high-tech data analysis and specialized software expertise. Originality/value – The study investigates the complex damage mechanics at the interface of AL7075-T6 and CFRP laminates and helps in combining PZT sensor networks with advanced imaging software for real-time damage characterization. Beyond mere detection, the system assesses “structural criticality, ” providing high-value diagnostic data for maintenance optimization and cost reduction.

Investigation of Critical Raw Materials in Sludge of Municipal Wastewater Treatment Plant

Topal, Murat; Arslan Topal, E. Işıl

In the present research, lanthanum, vanadium, tungsten, scandium, bismuth, antimony, gallium, phosphorus, magnesium, and cobalt from critical raw materials (CRMs) were monitored for one year in the sewage sludges from an advanced biological wastewater treatment plant with the aim of presentation of possibility of using sewage sludge as a secondary source of critical raw materials. The amounts of the critical raw materials in sewage sludge were calculated annually, and economic values were revealed. Maximum concentrations of lanthanum, scandium, tungsten, bismuth, antimony, gallium, vanadium, cobalt, magnesium, and phosphorus were 4.3, 1.6, 0.5, 1.51, 1.27, 1.7, 23, 5.6, 6500, and 16,170 mg/kg, respectively. In the sewage sludge, the amount of CRMs, which have been formed annually, have been listed as tungsten < scandium < antimony < bismuth < gallium < lanthanum < cobalt < vanadium < magnesium < phosphorus. In autumn, summer, spring, and summer season, the mean highest concentration was for P, while the minimum concentration was for W. In sewage sludge, P and W elements were the highest and the least of the CRMs, respectively. With the recovery of CRMs in sewage sludge, the highest theoric achievable income is for Mg, while the lowest income is for Sb. It is determined that a total of 26,083.8 USD/year could be obtained by recovering the CRMs mentioned here from the sewage sludge.

Monitoring of Zn and Cr in downstream water from uzunçayir dam in Turkey

    Topal, M.; Arslan Topal, E.I.

In this study, the concentrations of Zn and Cr in downstream waters from Uzunçayir Dam (Tunceli, Turkey) were monitored during spring (March, April, May) and summer (June, July, August) season. Zinc and Cr concentrations in surface water samples were detected using the ICP-MS device. According to the data obtained the lowest Zn and Cr concentrations in the spring season were 65.43±3.2 μg/L in March at 10th day for Zn and 0.28±0.02 μg/L in March at 10th and 20th day for Cr, the highest Zn and Cr concentrations were determined to be 83.12±4.1 μg/L in May at day 30 for Zn and 0.48±0.02 μg/L in May at day 30 for Cr. The lowest Zn and Cr concentrations in summer season were 55.48±2.7 μg/L at 30th day in August for Zn and 0.54±0.03 μg/L at 10th day in June for Cr. The highest Zn and Cr concentration in summer season were found as 69.48±3.5 μg/L in June at day 10 for Zn and 1.23±0.06 μg/L in August at day 30 for Cr. The Zn and Cr concentrations in the downstream of Uzunçayir Dam were found to be smaller than the Zn and Cr concentrations given by the Surface Water Quality Regulation (SWQR). As a result, it was determined that there was no harm in using water from the Uzunçayir Dam as irrigation water or drinking water in terms of Zn and Cr concentrations.

Production Optimisation of a Land-Based Trout Farm and the Reduction of its Environmental Effects

Guner, Yusuf; Kizak, Volkan; Saygi, Hulya; Turan, Gamze; Tekogul, Hatice; Karacalar, Ulviye; Gulec, Fatih; Hekimoglu, Muge

In this study, certain water quality parameters (water temperature, dissolved oxygen (DO), pH, total inorganic nitrogen (TIN), phosphate (PO4), nitrite (NO2), nitrate (NO3), ammonium (NH4), and (BOD5) in the effluents and the efficiency of the treatment systems for eliminating wastes at a commercial trout farm with a capacity of 10 tons/year in Izmir (Kemalpasa) were examined. The DO, temperature, pH, TIN, PO4, NO2, NO3, and BOD5 measured, were different in the outlet waters when compared with the inlet waters (p<0.05). The settling basin did not reduce the TIN and PO4, on the contrary, it caused an increase in the nitrogen (N) up to 19.9% and phosphorus (P) up to 20.30%, while the wetlands reduced the N, P, and BOD5 up to 53.2%, 58.2%, and 36.5%, respectively (p<0.05). According to the chemical and biological methods, the averages of the TIN and P loads for one tone of cultured trout without treatment were estimated to be were 80 kg and 7 kg, respectively. The annual TIN load of this trout farm was estimated to be 21.3 kg while the TP load was 2.9 kg for one tone of cultured trout when the treatment efficiency was taken into account. The microbiological analyses conducted with the effluent waters showed that the rate of aerobic mesophilic bacteria was found to be high in the summer but low in the winter. It was also detected that the coliform group bacteria were present in the environment in the summer while their occurence was with-in standards in the winter. Interactions of the 9 water quality parameters were identified through the linear regression analysis in order to reduce the environmental effects of the facility DO=28.296 - (0.248 x BOD5)- (2.948 x pH) + (0.189 x temperature) + (0.851 x inlet water) + (0.163 x winter) (R-2=0.912). According to this model, the DO values were increased by the temperature, inlet water and the winter season while reduced by the BOD5 and pH. The dissolved oxygen content in the wetland outlet water was measured as being high because of the nutrient and temperature rises which boosted photosyntesis. It was concluded that using mechanical settling methods were inadequate to minimise the nutrients released into the receiving water body so wetlands should be constructed in such a way as to receive the flow of effluents from the trout farms. As a result the quality of water used by the facility has no adverse impact on the aquaculture and environmental ecosystem.
