Investigation of Flower, Leaf, and Stem Parts of Three Gundelia Species Growth in the Eastern Anatolia Region of Türkiye from a Biochemical Perspective

Yilmaz, Fatih; Türkoglu, Ismail; Kirmizikaya Özmen, Gorkem; Yüce Babacan, Ebru; Yilmaz, Okkes

13 species of Gundelia species plants are endemic in T & uuml;rkiye and are frequently used by the public for both nutrition and medicinal objectives. In this study, three parts (flower, leaf, and stem) of three species of Gundelia ( G.dersim , G.glabra, and G.munzurensis) were biochemically investigated. DPPH and ABTS analyses for antioxidant activity were performed on methanol extracts of plant parts. As a result of both analyses in parallel, the flower part of G.munzurensis had the highest %Inhibition value (DPPH:91.85 +/- 0.78; ABTS:97.38 +/- 0) (P<0.001). In total phenolic (29.09 mg GAE/g) and total flavonoid (5.59 mg CE/g) measurements, the highest amount was found statistically quite significant (P<0.001) in the leaf part of G.munzurensis. Gallic, vanillic, ferulic, romantic, and cinnamic acids, which are phenolic acids and of the flavonoids, rutin, catechin, naringin, and naringenin, were determined in all plant parts. Vitamin D3, alpha-tocopherol, ergosterol, stigmasterol, and beta-sterol were detected in parts of all plant species. While palmitic (16:0), palmitoleic (16:1), stearic (18:0), oleic (18:1), linoleic (18:2), and linolenic (18:3) fatty acids as the main fatty acids were detected in all parts of the three Gundelia species, lauric (12:0), tridecanoic (13:0), myristic (14:0), pentadecanoic (15:0), cis-10-pentadecanoic (15:1), heptadecanoic (17:0), cis-10heptadecanoic (17:1), and eicosanoid (21:0) acids were also identified at different concentrations. Considering the biochemical properties of Gundelia species, it shows that they can be consumed as food and also used pharmacologically.

Comparative Micromorphological and Anatomical Investigations on the Subsection Distantes R. Bhattacharjee (Stachys L./Lamiaceae)

    Açar, Mikail; Satil, Fatih

In this study; comparative anatomical and micromorphological studies were performed on the subsection Distantes of the Stachys L. genus (Lamiaceae). Also, it was determined distinctive anatomical characters for the taxa of subsection in the study. In anatomical studies, free-hand cross-sections and the paraffin embedding method was applied with the microtome. Micromorphological studies were performed in LM (Light Microscope) and SEM (Scanning Electron Microscope). In anatomical studies, besides of similarities in stem and leaf structures there were also some differences in taxa. In micromorphological studies, the trichome and nutlet characteristics were found to be useful characters on taxa and at species and subspecies level. As a result of the study, the presence of sclerenchyma like a bundle in the stem structure and the presence and types of glandular trichomes and ornamentation on the surface of nutlet, the presence of the wing and ventral structure in the nutlet were important characters that can be used to distinguish taxa. According to the numerical findings, trichome and nutlet micromorphological characters were more important than anatomical characters.

The Power of Expectations in School Management: Pygmalion Effect

    Gündüzalp, Seda; Özan, Mukadder Boydak

This study aims to discover the pygmalion effect, which suggests to affect a person's expectations from other people on the actions of those people, by taking the opinions of primary school teachers. In order for the study to reach its goal, triangulation technique, which is a mixed method design, has been used. A likert-type five-point scale made up of 18 items and a semi-structured interview form comprising two open-ended questions have been used to acquire data. The scale has applied to take the opinions of teachers working at the schools administered by 25 managers mastering in a postgraduate program without thesis at the Education Management Inspection Planning and Economy Department of Firat University Institute of Education Sciences. The quantitative and qualitative data acquired have been analyzed by means of statistical softwares. It has been concluded from the findings acquired from teachers' views reveal the reality and accuracy of pygmalion effect in the field of education, and show that high expectations pave the way for teachers' motivation, effort, active working, commitment as well as the growth of their enthusiasm. It is seen that high expectations will generally reveal high performance, while low expectations, due to their negative effects on employees, will cause decrease in motivation as well as unwillingness towards the job being done and therefore, a decline or stability in performance.

Co-Author Link Prediction from Academic Databases

    Burhan, Yucel; Das, Resul

Social networks: social communication platforms where individuals exhibit their attitudes and behaviors, gestures and mimics in symbolic actions in a virtual environment. Their swift development and wide usage proportion rises social networks' necessity and popularity. People communicate with each other and share some data like idea, thinking, photo, video and location. When this data is processed, very important information is obtained about the users. In this light, it is possible to make important estimates about the users. To analyze a network, the network model, properties of graph structure, criteria and metrics must be calculated first. In this study, similarity calculation between the subjects which authors studied has been done. In this application, five suitable models (Jaccard Index, Sorensen Index, Common Neighbor, L. H. Newman Index and Salton Index methods) are applied to the data set generated by randomly selected twenty writers. In order to evaluate the calculation results; the results of the similarity calculation between authors with known linkages are used as reference values. Comparisons of obtained similarity values with reference values result in new connections. These links reveal that authors can publish articles together.

Are Reasoning Skills on Geometric Shapes Predictors of Geometry Performance?

    Ilhan, Aziz; Aslaner, Recep

In this study, the relationship between the pre-service mathematics teachers' reasoning skills on geometric shapes and geometry performances were investigated. The participants of the study consisted of 384 pre-service mathematics teachers, 252 females, 132 males who studied at the faculties of education of two universities in Eastern and Southeastern Anatolia in the fall semester of 2016-2017 academic year. In the study, due to the limitations in terms of time and labor conditions, appropriate sampling method was preferred when determining the sample. In the section where the applications of the study were done, relational survey model was used. The data of the study were collected by reasoning skills on geometric shapes test and geometry performance test developed by the researchers. The data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, t-test, ANOVA test, Cohen's f, Cohen's d effect size values, correlation analysis and regression analysis. In the study, when the reasoning skills on geometric shapes and geometry performance data were compared according to gender variable, it was found that the average of men was higher than women. In addition, when the geometry performance scores are examined, it is seen that the third grade has the highest average, while reasoning skills on geometric shapes scores have the highest average in the second grade. When the scale and test scores of preservice mathematics teachers were examined according to gender variable, it was found that reasoning skills on geometric shapes ability and geometry performance scores did not show a significant difference between them. As a result of ANOVA test, it was found that the differences between the classes were significant reasoning skills on geometric shapes ability and geometry performance. The calculated Cohen's effect size values showed that the differences between the classes were low. When this difference was investigated between the classes, it was found that there was a significant difference between some classes. When the Cohen's effect size values of these differences are examined, it is seen that there are low significant effects between the classes. When the correlation values between the variables were examined, a high-level relationship was found between the reasoning skills on geometric shapes ability and the geometry performance. In addition, it was found that reasoning skills on geometric shapes ability is a significant predictor of geometry performance. As a result of the findings obtained in the study, suggestions were made about the use of the concepts of reasoning skills on geometric shapes and geometry performance in academic field and mathematics teaching.
