Evaluation of Nano-Zinc Borate Effects on Thermal Properties, Morphology, Antibacterial Activity, and Drug Release Behavior of Starch/Gelatin Hydrogel Films for Biomedical Applications

Starch and gelatin offer opportunities for use due to their non-toxicity, biocompatibility, physical and functional properties. In this study, different amounts of nano-zinc borate were added to starch/gelatin composition for biological applications and their properties were studied. The structure of the films was investigated by various techniques. Nanostructured zinc borate was synthesized using a chemical method and particle sizes were determined as 196 nm. The atenolol drug was doped into the polymer composite. The atenolol release was performed at pH 7.4 and in phosphate-buffered saline solution medium. Cumulative drug release was 76% with the inclusion of nano-zinc borate in the polymer mixture. The atenolol release was approximately 50%–70% in films with nano-zinc borate added after 300 min. Furthermore, thermal resistance of the films improved with the addition of nano-zinc borate. The investigated chemical compound exhibited pronounced antibacterial activity against Gram-positive bacteria (Bacillus subtilis and Staphylococcus aureus), with significantly greater potency compared to Gram-negative bacteria (E. coli and Pseudomonas aeruginosa). Notably, the formulation containing 1.5% starch, 0.5% gelatin, and 1% nano-zinc borate demonstrated broad-spectrum efficacy against all tested pathogens, highlighting its potential as a promising antibacterial agent. The observed differential activity against bacterial strains suggests that fine-tuning the concentrations of starch, gelatin, and nano-zinc borate may optimize antibacterial efficacy and broaden the spectrum. The results showed us that non-toxic and biocompatible polymer films can be realized in pharmaceutical industry systems and biomedical applications.

Development of rare earth element and carbon fiber-based filler for polyethylene—Mechanical and thermal performance

    Kısmet, Yılmaz; Ayikurt, Pamuk

In the present study, three fillers produced with carbon fiber powder (CFP) and rare earth elements were developed for low-density polyethylene production. These fillers included CFP with a grain size of less than 400 microns and over 90% pure lanthanum and cerium oxides. Polyethylene was employed to ensure the thermoplasticity and homogeneity of the fillers. The fillers were mixed with the matrix material separately, first mechanically and then homogenously in the extruder, then the test bars were produced with an injection machine. In the mechanical tests, it was determined that the tensile strength of the test bars improved by ~20% and the elastic region increased due to the increasing amount of filler. Similarly, an improvement of about 40% in bending stress was realized. In addition, as the fluidity of the mixtures has improved, it has been possible to produce at lower temperatures and save energy in the production. Thermogravimetric analysis was conducted to determine the melting/crystallization temperatures and material losses in the compounds. The scanning electron microscope analysis showed that the fillers were irregularly distributed on the surface in parallel and perpendicular directions. In addition, x-ray diffraction and energy dispersive spectroscopy analyses were performed on the surfaces.

Compatibilization of polyvinyl chloride - polymethyl methacrylate polymer blends with maleic anhydride-styrene-methyl methacrylate terpolymer

    Yilmaz, Ersen

In this study, nonmiscible polyvinyl chloride (PVC) and polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) polymers were made miscible by using MA-St-MMA terpolymer as a compatibilizer. Maleic anhydride-styrene-methyl methacrylate (MA-St-MMA) terpolymer was synthesized in our laboratory and used. The synthesized terpolymer was determined by FT-IR spectroscopy. Equal mass PVC/PMMA mixture samples were prepared in series and the compatibilizer terpolymer varying between 2% and 10% by mass was added to the samples and the effect of the added terpolymer on the miscibility was determined viscometrically, thermally, mechanically and, visually. With the addition of the compatibilizer, the two components in the mixture behave like a single polymer with a single glass transition temperature (Tg) and the mixture became compatible. As a result of viscometric experiments, it has been determined that with the added MA-St-MMA terpolymer, the Δb value derivated from the Krigbaum-Wall equation which is the miscibility parameter of a mixture shifted into the positive (+) zone indicating that the two polymers became miscible. By visual analysis, it was observed that the added terpolymer reduced the opaque appearance and the phase separations of the mixture. From the tensile test, a significant improvement in impact toughness was observed. When all the data obtained were evaluated, it was determined that the synthesized MA-St-MMA terpolymer was a suitable compatibilizer for the mixture of PVC and PMMA.
