The Symptom Experience and Functioning of Non-Hospitalized COVID-19 Patients Within the First 20 days

The adverse physical, psychological, and mental health consequences associated with COVID-19 illness are well-documented. However, how specific symptoms change over time and how COVID-19 affects one’s day-to-day activities of daily living (ADL), Quality of Life (QoL), sleep quality, and fatigue severity are not well described. This longitudinal and descriptive study examined the changes in COVID-19 symptoms, ADL, QoL, sleep quality, and fatigue severity within the first 20 days. A convenience sample (n = 41) of non-hospitalized SARS-CoV-2 positive patients were recruited and followed for 20 days. Participants completed self-report measures: COVID-19 symptoms, ADL, QoL, sleep quality, and fatigue severity at days: 1, 10, and 20 following a diagnosis. Findings revealed that symptoms decreased over 20 days (p <.001). In parallel with the decrease in symptoms, QoL and ADL improved over 20 days (p <.05). However, sleep quality and fatigue severity did not improve within 20 days (p >.05). Our findings contribute to the growing evidence that COVID-19 symptoms can linger, especially fatigue and sleep quality, that affect overall day-to-day functioning for at least 20 days after diagnosis. To mitigate the effect of COVID-19 on QOL and ADL, findings underscore the need for clinicians to work collaboratively with patients to develop a symptom management plan for a variety of symptoms including fatigue and sleep quality. Beginning to repurpose existing self-management strategies for the longer term COVID-19 symptoms could be beneficial and help to optimize patient outcomes. Future work should examine these variables over a longer timeframe and among different samples of non-hospitalized patients.

The Effects of Hopelessness and Some Variables on Metabolic Syndrome in Schizophrenia Patients

Çevik Durmaz, Yadigar; Menekli, Tuğba; Ersoy Özcan, Berna

This is a descriptive study conducted to determine the prevalence of Metabolic Syndrome (MetS) in Schizophrenia patients and identify the effects of hopelessness and some variables on MetS. The study was conducted at the Psychiatry Clinic of a university hospital in Turkey between May and August 2020 with 105 schizophrenia patients receiving treatment as inpatients. The data of the study were collected by a Personal Information Form, a Physiological Measurements Form and (BHS). The data were analyzed by using SPSS 25. The mean age of the patients was 35.31 ± 9.07, their mean duration of disease was 11.35 ± 9.07 years, and 60.0% of the patients were using atypical antipsychotics as their latest drug treatment. 42.9% of the patients had MetS, while the mean hopelessness level of those with MetS was 10.84 ± 3.81. It was determined that hopelessness levels and some sociodemographic (age) and clinical variables significantly predicted the MetS status in the schizophrenia patients.

Quality of Life and Perceived Social Support Before and After Sex Reassignment Surgery

Gümüşsoy, Süreyya; Hortu, İsmet; Alp Dal, Nursel; Dönmez, Sevgül; Ergenoğlu, Ahmet Mete

This study aimed to explore the pre- and postoperative differences in quality of life and perceived social support of Female-to-Male transsexual patients who underwent mastectomy and complete hysterectomy. Sixty-three Female-to-Male female individuals who underwent complete hysterectomy and mastectomy between November 2019 and November 2020 were included in this study. Data were collected using the Personal Information Form, Multidimensional Scale of Perceived Social Support, and the World Health Organization Quality of Life Scale Short Form. The pre- and postoperative perceived social support mean scores of patients were 57.2 ± 9.0 and 74.9 ± 7.3, respectively. The pre- and postoperative quality of life mean scores of patients were 76.9 ± 8.3 and 107.8 ± 10.1, respectively. There were statistically significant differences between the measurements (p <.05). In addition, the patients whose education level was primary school, whose income was less than their expenditure, whose father was a primary school graduate, whose family had a strict family opinion on sexuality, whose family had a traditional view, and who had a high body mass index were found to have higher postoperative social support perceptions and quality of life. The patients’ postoperative quality of life and perceived social support improved after sex reassignment surgery.

The Effect of the Transtheoretical Model Based Walking Exercise Training and Follow-Up on Improving Exercise Behavior and Metabolic Control in Patients with Type 2 Diabetes

Kaplan Serin, Emine; Citlik Saritas, Seyhan

This study aims to determine the effects of transtheoretical model-based walking exercise training and follow-up on improving exercise behavior and metabolic control in patients with type 2 diabetes. This randomized controlled trial was conducted as a pre-test and post-test experimental model with 76 intervention and 76 control individuals. The intervention group received the transtheoretical model-based exercise training. Data were collected using patient identification form, transtheoretical model scales, pedometer and metabolic outcomes. Data were analyzed by Chi square, two-way ANOVA, Mauchly’s, Greenhouse-Geisser, Friedman, and McNamer test. The overall score means for the exercise change processes, decision-making balance and self-efficacy scales increased compared to the pre-test (p <.001). The mean HDL increased from 41.39 ± 10.35 to 49.18 ± 11.58, and average number of steps per day increased from 3264.31 ± 1933.03 to 5639.37 ± 2317.01. Consequently, this difference between the groups was significant (p <.05).
