Rotor Field-Oriented Control of Doubly Fed Induction Generator in Wind Energy Conversion System

    Omac, Zeki; Erdem, Irfan

In this study, robust and high-performance vector control of a rotor side converter (RSC) was performed for stability and efficient operation doubly fed induction generator (DFIG) based on the variable speed wind turbine (VSWT). The mathematical model of the DFIG is simulated in the computer. Amplitude and frequency of the voltage in the DFIG were controlled for different values of load and variable speeds. In the experimental study, a DFIG-based wind turbine system was set up in the laboratory. The field position of the stator was detected from stator voltages by a phase-locked loop (PLL) circuit. The rotor position was measured with an incremental encoder connected to the rotor shaft of the DFIG. The angular position of the slip was calculated by the difference between the rotor and the stator field positions. The frequency and amplitude of rotor currents were determined with the angular position of slip. To generate output voltages of converter feeding rotor windings, the space vector pulse width modulation (SVPWM) technique was used. In the experimental study, the RSC was controlled with the DS1103 board. The prepared experiment set was tested at different operating speeds.

Investigation of an Outer Rotor In-Wheel Switched Reluctance Motor for Electric Vehicles by Finite Element Method

    Omaç, Zeki

The demand of fossil fuel vehicles has decreased due to carbon emissions. Recently, electric vehicles (EV) with electric motor propulsion have gotten attention due to their zero carbon emissions and high efficiency. In this study, an outer rotor in wheel switched reluctance motor (IWSRM) with 18 poles on the stator and 24 poles on the rotor, designed for the propulsion of electric vehicles, is investigated in two-dimensional Finite Element Method (FEM). The magnetic field distributions of IWSRM for different rotor positions at nominal current are obtained. Then, the torque and phase inductance are calculated. As a result, the designed IWRSM provided low torque.

Control of switched reluctance generator in wind power system application for variable speeds

    Omaç, Zeki; Cevahir, Ceren

Switched reluctance generators (SRGs) come into prominence in other electrical machines with its simple structure, only stator winding, reliability, high fault tolerance and the possibility of working within wide speed range. These generators are used especially in wind power plants due to their ability to operate in variable speed range and applications of aviation and electric cars. In this study, the control of the SRG was performed. A simulation of SRG driver in Matlab/Simulink was performed and the real-time implementation control of SRG is carried out on DS1103 Ace kit digital signal processor to determine the performance of the SRG. The output voltage of the SRG is controlled by the proportional-integral (PI) voltage controller. As a result, the graphs of change in SRG phases currents and SRG output voltage were obtained according to different parameters. Simulation results compared with experimental results. Consequently, they overlap on experimental results.

    Omaç, Z.

Solar energy is a clean energy and it is increasingly being used all over the world. In this study, a centrifugal water pump system driven by switched reluctance motor (SRM) has been designed with powered by a photovoltaic (PV) energy source. The voltage of the PV source has been increased by using a boost converter. The mathematical model of the system has been composed in the Matlab/Simulink and simulation results have been obtained. Proportional–integral–derivative (PID) controller has been used to control output voltage of the boost converter at 50 kHz switching frequency. The boost converter is controlled by an eight-bit PIC16F877A microcontroller. The electrical energy obtained by PV panels has been stored in batteries. Battery charge testers have been used to control the battery charge level. The speed and current control of SRM has been done by using DS1103 Ace kit. The values of phases currents have been measured by using hall sensors and transferred to the digital signal processor (DSP) by analog to digital converter inputs. The accuracy of simulation results has been proved by experimental results.

An Intrusion Detection System Using Apache Log Files

    Ince, Cemile; Omaç, Zeki

Today, thousands of systems are exposed to attacks every day. For this reason, many studies have been done in this area. These studies, using data mining (VM) and machine learning techniques, are trying to determine the intrusion detection by examining the log files in different OSI layers. These studies generally use standard data sets and propose hybrid systems to increase the success rate. In this study, an attack detection system (STS) has been developed by using Inonu University web page log files. The log files used as a data set consist of more than 35 million requests and a total of 326 attacks. As a result, the system was trained using artificial neural network (ANN) and attacks were detected with 99.3% success.

Fuzzy-logic-based robust speed control of switched reluctance motor for low and high speeds

    Omaç, Zeki

Switched reluctance motor (SRM) is operated at high magnetic saturation to generate large torque. The flux linkage of SRM is a nonlinear function with phase current and rotor position because of the high magnetic saturation. Also, the performance of the speed controller for the SRM driver system can be negatively affected by noise, disturbances, and inertia of load torque. Therefore, the fuzzy speed controller for the SRM driver system was developed in this study. In addition, a dynamic model of SRM was simulated in Matlab/Simulink software. Based on the results obtained in this study, the speed of the SRM was controlled over a wide range of speeds including low and high speeds by the fuzzy speed controller. Furthermore, in simulation, the rotor speed was simulated depending on the reference speed. Moreover, the speed of the SRM was experimentally tested using the DS1103 Ace kit. Finally, simulation results were compared with experimental results and they were found to be consistent with each other.

Design, analysis, and control of in-wheel switched reluctance motor for electric vehicles

    Omaç, Z.; Polat, M.; Öksüztepe, E.; Yıldırım, M.; Yakut, O.; Eren, H.; Kaya, M.; Kürüm, H.

Estimation of dimension parameters for an electric machine has great importance before assembling on production line. As a matter of fact, researchers should find optimum solution once they decide to perform analytical design of an electric machine. In this study, we have tried to find dimensional and electrical parameters via derived mathematical equations for in-wheel switched reluctance motor (IW-SRM), and the motor has been manufactured. Moreover, an experimental setup is designed, and the speed and torque control of IW-SRM is carried out. The motor tests including both standstill and running test are performed by using the experimental setup. Initial size parameters are intuitively provided as motor analysis is conducted by software package. Then, numerous trials are examined to get optimum results. In fact, this motor is employed by an electric vehicle whose design is ongoing. Therefore, optimum motor parameters for required base speed and torque have been estimated by solving generated equations for IW-SRM with 18/12 poles via MATLAB. Considering parameters estimated, analysis of IW-SRM has been performed by Ansoft Maxwell 15.0 Software Package based on 3D finite element method (3D-FEM). Consequently, the estimated parameters have been validated by the results of Maxwell 3D FEM. Experimental results of the motor manufactured are obtained via the motor driver designed; also have been validated by Maxwell 3D.

Sensorless vector control of PMSM with non-sinusoidal flux using observer based on FEM

Oksuztepe, Eyyup; Omac, Zeki; Kurum, Hasan

Back electromotive force method has been widely used in the position and speed sensorless control of permanent magnet synchronous motors. In this method, it is supposed that the back electromotive forces induced on the stator windings by the rotor permanent magnets are sinusoidal. This assumption causes errors in the estimation of speed and position. In this paper, an observer using the stator winding linkage flux model obtained by using finite element method for position and speed sensorless field-oriented control of permanent magnet motor is proposed. The validity of the proposed method is demonstrated using DS 1104.
