The antioxidant activity, total phenolic content, enzyme inhibition, anticancer properties of Achillea millefolium L. (yarrow), which is generally consumed by humans as herbal tea, were investigated. Yarrow extracts were prepared with different extraction techniques and solvents and the optimum conditions were determined. When the antioxidant activity and total phenolic content results were evaluated, the best yield was obtained with ultrasound-assisted extraction for all solvents. Moreover, the yields from highest to lowest were methanol, water, and acetonitrile. The enzyme inhibition and anticancer of Achillea millefolium L. extracts using methanol were evaluated. The IC50 values for the inhibition of xanthine oxidase and acetylcholinesterase were 4.974 ± 0.54 and 21.891 ± 1.118 µg/mL, respectively. The extract concentration was determined to be 23.85 μg/mL for 50% reduction in growth inhibitory activity cell viability (IC50) against breast cancer (MCF-7).

Garlic has an important place in daily nutrition. It is consumed by people because of its antimicrobial, antibacterial, and antioxidant properties, and it is also known to be good for many diseases. Along with these properties of garlic, its fatty acid content is also important. The goal of this study is to determine the fatty acids in Allium tuncelianum (Tunceli garlic), which grows naturally in Tunceli, Turkey, by gas chromatography with flame ionization detection (GC–FID). Fifteen of 37 fatty acids studied were detected in Allium tuncelianum, and the primary fatty acids in the sample extracts were determined to be the polyunsaturated fatty acid (PUFA) linoleic acid (C18:2n6c, 41.595%) and the monounsaturated fatty acid (MUFA) oleic acid (C18:1n9c, 33.302%). Small quantities of saturated fatty acids (SAFAs) were also present, including palmitic acid (C16:0, 11.739%), henoicosanoic acid (C21:0, 6.946%), and stearic acid (C18:0, 2.362%).

- MakaleAçık Erişim2021Scopus SJRQ3Determination of anthocyanins and anthocyanidins in the wild grape (Vitis sylvestris Gmelin) by high-performance liquid chromatography-diode array detection (HPLC-DAD)
Karaaslan-Ayhan, Nagihan; Yaman, Mehmet
The determination of anthocyanins and anthocyanidins in wild grapes (Vitis sylvestris Gmelin) from Tunceli-Turkey are reported together with the influence of the extraction conditions on the results. Representative sets of anthocyanins (delphinidin-3-o-glucoside, cyanidin-3-o-glucoside, pelargonidin-3-o-glucoside, malvidin-3-o-glucoside) and anthocyanidins (delphinidin, cyanidin, pelargonidin, malvidin) were simultaneously determined by high performance liquid chromatography with diode array detection (HPLC-DAD). The extraction conditions including the solvent type, extraction time and liquid:solid ratio (v:w) were optimized. The anthocyanin and anthocyanidin contents changed significantly depending on the extraction conditions. Malvidin-3-o-glucoside was identified to be the primary compound.

- MakaleYalnız künye2019Scopus SJRQ3Determination of antioxidant capacity using different acidified solvents and element contents of Allium tuncelianum: A regional and varietal study on endemic edible garlic
Karaaslan, Nagihan M.; Ince, Muharrem; Kaplan Ince, Olcay; Goksin Karaaslan, Merve
Allium tuncelianum (Tunceli garlic), an endemic and threatened plant species in the Tunceli province of Eastern Turkey, is an important native source for local people. The antioxidant activities of the acidified extracts of water, acetonitrile, methanol, and ethanol of Allium tuncelianum were investigated using five antioxidant capacity tests. The results indicated that methanol extract efficiencies of garlic samples using the ABTS, CUPRAC, and reducing power capacities were higher than the other extracts. Water extract and acetonitrile extract values were highest for total phenolic content and metal chelating activities, respectively. Moreover, the element contents such as calcium (Ca), copper (Cu), iron (Fe), potassium (K), magnesium (Mg), manganese (Mn), sodium (Na), and zinc (Zn) of Allium tuncelianum samples digested by microwave and ashing ovens were determined by flame atomic absorption spectrophotometry and the results were compared statistically. The Ca, Cu, K, Mg, and Zn concentrations using the microwave method were found to be higher than the ashing procedure. However, the Fe, Mn, and Na concentrations using the ashing method were found to be higher than those using the the microwave protocol.

- MakaleYalnız künye2017Scopus SJRQ3Characterization of antioxidant activity, vitamins, and elemental composition of ciris (Asphodelus aestivus L.) from Tunceli, Turkey
Unal, Ilkay; Kaplan Ince, Olcay
Ciris (Asphodelus aestivus L.), which has been used for a wide range of medicinal purposes and is indigenous in Tunceli, Turkey, was collected from the eastern and western parts of the city. The goal of this study was to determine the vitamins, essential elements, and antioxidant activity of this natural product. The 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl-hydrate radical scavenging activity, metal chelating activity, reducing power, total phenolics, and Vitamin A, Vitamin C, sodium, potassium, phosphorus, magnesium, calcium, copper, manganese, and zinc concentrations were determined in ciris extracts. The concentrations of Vitamin A, Vitamin C, and Mn of ciris from west Tunceli were higher than samples from the east.

- MakaleAçık Erişim2012Scopus SJRQ3DETERMINATION OF TRACE METALS IN PLANT LEAVES AS BIOMONITOR OF POLLUTION EXTENT BY A SENSITIVE STAT-AAS METHOD
Kaya, Gokce; Yaman, Mehmet
The aim of this study is to assess the potential of bioindicator/biomonitor plants to determine pollution extent of toxic metals. Lead, cadmium, and copper concentrations in the plants including Platanus sp., Olea europaea L., Vitis vinifera L., and Armeniaca sp. taken from the industrial area of the city of Gaziantep, Turkey, and control location were determined by using STAT-atomic absorption spectrometry. Lead concentration in leaves of Platanus sp. taken from 50m around the battery plant was found to be higher than 3,000 mg kg(-1). The observed Pb concentration in this plant was 40 times higher than that in Armeniaca sp. grown in the same location. The limits of detection for plants were found to be 0.050 mg kg(-1) for Pb and Cu and 0.005 mg kg(-1) for Cd. It was concluded that the Platanus sp. plant can be considered as both biomonitor and hyperaccumulator.
