Using Ochrobactrum thiophenivorans and Sphingomonas melonis for bioremediation of Imidacloprid

    Erguven, Gokhan Onder; Demirci, Ulas

To solve the environmental problems of the pesticides, bioremediation methods are commonly useful for their environment friendly properties. These methods are more cheap, useful and have more advantages for remediate receiving environments In this study, imidacloprid which is one of the selective insecticide in all over the world is chosenfor bioremediation studies with two soil bacteria. The imidacloprid used in the Mediterranean climate for cotton, pistachios, tomatoes, peppers and eggplant cultivation. The bioremediation of this insecticide was investigated via the performance of O.thiophenivorans and S. melonis in agitated culture media. The agricultural soil used for the isolation of these two bacteria was taken from the cotton cultivated agricultural area in Adana province in Turkey. For this purpose, the isolated and enriched bacteria were added to the recommended insecticide concentrations, and the Imidacloprid active material, Chemical Oxygen Demand (COD), Biological Oxygen Demand (BOD5), Total Organic Carbon (TOC), pH and dissolved oxygen (DO) parameters were determined for two weeks on each day of the study. O. thiophenivorens and S. melonis bioremediate the Imidacloprid insecticide with high efficiency (over 90%). According to these results, it is understood that these bacteria can be preferred in the bioremediation of receiving environments that are contaminated with such pesticides and can be useful for scientists to handle the opposite effects of such persistent organic pollutants and COD, BOD5 and TOC parameters can easily give opinions about decreasing of pesticides like the active materials

The bioremediation of glyphosate in soil media by some newly isolated bacteria: The COD, TOC removal efficiency and mortality assessment for Daphnia magna

Korkmaz, Volkan; Yildirim, Numan; Erguven, Gokhan Onder; Durmus, Barbaros; Nuhoglu, Yasar

In this study, the bioremediation capacity of three isolates of Bacillus aryabhattai, Pseudomonas azotoformans and Sphingomonas pseudosanguinis and their consortia at glyphosate added soil medium investigated via the reduction of chemical oxygen demand (COD) and total organic carbon (TOC) parameters in filtrate waters obtained from a designed bioremediation setup. Additionally, mortality assays were performed on the filtrate waters with model organism Daphnia magna. According to the results of the experiments, at the end of the 11 days, the highest COD reduction rate seen in media with S. pseudosanguinis as 92.1% while TOC rate was 69.13% in consortia media. While the mortality rate was 10, 10 and 5% on B, P and S application groups at the end of the 72th respectively, these rates were 100% in control group at the end of the 48th. According to the results obtained from bioremediation and mortality assessment, these bacteria can reach the high bioremediation rate one by one and in consortia media.

Remediation of pollutants with economical importance from mining waters: Usage of Cladophora fracta

Topal, Murat; Arslan Topal, E. Is̨ıl; Öbek, Erdal

The accumulations of elements (Mo, Cu, Zn and Ni) those have both pollutant characteristics and economic importance were determined in the macroalga (green alga Cladophora fracta) exposed to mining water with the aim of presentation of the possibility of using the alga as a bioindicator of these elements. The highest element concentrations (Mo, Cu, Zn and Ni) accumulated by Cladophora fracta were determined as 2.38; 19.66; 4510.5 and 19.4 mg/kg, respectively. Bioconcentration factor values decreased in the order: Ni>Cu>Mo>Zn. The Metal Pollution Index (MPI) values calculated between 17.50 and 44.98 were used to determine the pollution degree of Cladophora fracta. As a result, it was determined that Cladophora fracta highly accumulated the elements from the mine gallery water. Therefore, Cladophora fracta was a good bioaccumulator and indicator for the remediation of the elements in mine gallery waters.

Investigation of potential health risks in terms of arsenic in grapevine exposed to gallery waters of an abandoned mining area in Turkey

Topal, Murat; Arslan Topal, E. Işıl; Öbek, Erdal

In this study, potential health risks in terms of arsenic in grapevine exposed to gallery waters of an abandoned mining area in Turkey were investigated. The concentrations of arsenic were determined in roots, stems, and leaves. The translocation factors and bioconcentration factors were calculated. The highest arsenic concentration in the grapevine was determined as 539.4±27 mg/kg, for root. The arsenic concentrations in grapevine as follows: Root>Leaf>Stem. The estimated daily exposure followed an order for the male, female, and children: dermal<inhalation<ingestion<dietary. The non-carcinogenic and total hazard index values calculated for As were higher than 1. The risk of arsenic to be carcinogenic has been determined. The highest carcinogenic risk can be listed as dietary > ingestion > inhalation > dermal. In our study, calculated carcinogenic risk values in terms of dietary, inhalation, and ingestion are higher than 10−4-10−6. As a result, the highest cancer risk on human health was determined as a dietary intake of grapevine leaves according to the calculated carcinogenic risk values.
