This research paper aimed to establish the optimal conditions for lead (Pb(II)) ions from industrial wastewater (IW) using response surface methodology and central composite design (CCD) approach. A fixed-bed column study was designed by using a novel and reusable biocomposite material, Amanita vaginata (A. vaginata) immobilized on Amberlite XAD-4 resin (A&XAD-4@AV), to find out biosorption behavior of Pb(II) ions. Various experimental variables such as optimum pH value, biocomposite material amount, flow rate, and Pb(II) ions initial concentration were investigated, which significantly affected the Pb(II) ions removal efficiency. The maximum Pb(II) removal efficiency of A&XAD-4@AV biocomposite material was determined as 11.2 mg g−1 under optimum conditions. The reusability of A&XAD-4@AV biocomposite material was found to be suitable. For checking model adequacy, a regression model was derived using CCD to predict the responses and analysis of variance (ANOVA) and lack of fit test was performed. It was observed that the quadratic model, which was controlled and proposed, originated from experimental design data. The ANOVA showed a high coefficient of determination (R2 = 0.9896, R2Adj = 0.9800, R2Pred = 0.9633). Finally, developed and optimized method was applied effectively to wastewater for determining Pb(II) ions levels. The current study indicated that the prepared A&XAD-4@AV is an efficient material to remove of Pb(II) ions from IW.

Multi-walled carbon nanotubes (fMWCNTs) that functionalized and loaded Ag nanoparticles (AgNPs) were investigated to adsorp doxorubicin hydrochloride (DXR). DXR release behavior efficiency was determined using kinetic studies. DXR agent was treated into fMWCNTs@AgNPs material with different drug loading rates. The material was successfully established and characterized using transmission electron microscopy, and fourier transform–infrared spectroscopy. Thermogravimetric analysis was performed to elucidate the effect of temperature on mass loss and X-ray diffraction analysis was systematically assessed the crystalline state of DXR. Various kinetic models including Higuchi, Baker Hixson-Crowell, and power-law were applied. It was revealed that DXR has more binding affinity to the fMWCNTs@AgNPs material system surface as a nanocarrier at pH 7.4 and showed more release at pH 5.0. Functionalized material confirmed its efficiency as pH-based drug delivery system. Used material can be utilized as promising nanocarriers, and findings will contribute to the rational design of novel delivery tools for drugs.

Hydrogels because of their unique potentials, such as highwater content and hydrophilicity, are of interest for the controlled release of drug molecules. In the present study, a biofilm was produced using chitosan, a natural polymer. Characterization analyses of the synthesized biofilm were performed using Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), thermogravimetric analysis-differential thermal analysis, x-ray diffraction, and scanning electron microscopy-energy dispersive x-ray spectrometry. The analysis results of the film before loading were compared to the analysis made after adding vitamin B12 to the film. The release percentage of vitamin B12 was investigated by using ultraviolet-visible spectrophotometery. The FT-IR bands of vitamin B12 were in the range of 2,800-3,500 cm-1 and 1,000 cm-1-1,750 cm-1. When pH increased from 3 to 7, release of vitamin B12 from the biopolymer increased up to pH 5. While examining the release potential, parameters, such as pH, initial concentration of vitamin B12, release time, and solution volume, were optimized by using response surface methodology. It was determined that with the increase in release time and the initial concentration, pH contributed positively to the release of vitamin B12. The following conditions were determined for release of vitamin B12 from the biofilm: pH: 4.2, initial concentration of vitamin B12: 54.0 mg L-1, the release time: 117 min, and volume of solution: 2.1 mL. The analysis of variance results showed that the determination coefficients for the use of synthesized biofilm in vitamin B12 release were high and R2 =0.9704.

Kaplan Ince, Olcay; Aydogdu, Burcu; Ince, Muharrem
This study aimed to develop new generation cakes that were fortified with calcined ZnO nanoparticles (CZnO), uncalcined ZnO nanoparticles (UCZnO), beads (B(CZnO)) synthesized by encapsulating the CZnO with sodium alginate (SA), and the beads (B(UCZnO)) synthesized by encapsulating the UCZnO with sodium alginate (SA) and investigated the zinc (Zn) release in fortified cakes in simulated body fluids (SBF). The present study represents a novel method for increasing intestinal absorption and bioavailability of dietary zinc with zinc nanoparticles for use in the preparation of Zn fortified cakes as a dietary supplement to compensate for zinc deficiency in humans. The results revealed that a rapid increase in the release time and rate in the SGF solution was noted in the UCZnO added cakes. It was attributed to increased intestinal absorption and bioavailability as a result of the ultra-small size of ZnO. Also, ZnO release kinetics in SBF was also studied and data were adjusted into different kinetic models involving zero-order, first-order, Higuchi, and Korsmeyer–Peppas models. The present investigation recommends adding UCZnO to the cakes to control and increase the release from the cakes.

Mercury (II) ions have significant ecological impacts. In the current study, magnetized iron oxide (Fe3O4) nanoparticles were green synthesized and encapsulated with alginate (ALG). The nanoparticles were converted into a composite (Fe3O4/ALG). The Fe3O4/ALG beads were used to remove Hg (II) from industrial wastewater. Characterization was performed by X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy—energy dispersive spectroscopy (SEM-EDS), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), and thermogravimetric analysis-differential thermal analysis (TGA-DTA). A central composite design (CCD) approach was performed to define the experimental conditions providing the highest global adsorption efficiency and to optimize the pH, temperature and adsorbent mass. Hg (II) concentrations were determined by flame and electrothermal atomic absorption spectrometry (FAAS and ETAAS). The limits of detection (LOD) and quantification (LOQ) were 1.2 mg L−1 and 3.5 mg L−1 for FAAS and 0.2 µg L−1 and 0.5 µg L−1 for ETAAS, respectively. Additionally, Langmuir, Freundlich, and Temkin isotherm models were employed to determine the adsorption mechanism. The adsorption capacity of Fe3O4/ALG was determined to be 49.18 mg g−1 by the Langmuir model. Kinetic studies revealed that the adsorption of Hg (II) best fitted the pseudo-second order model. The Gibb’s free energy (ΔG°) values showed that the adsorption of Hg (II) on Fe3O4/ALG occurred spontaneously.

Tribulus terrestris (TT) is a famous traditional plant of family Zygophyllaceae and widely distributes around the world. TT has potential to elevate the testosterone, testosterone precursor and luteinizing hormone levels. In this study, trials were conducted to assessment the impact of Tribulus terrestris addition on sperm motility of rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) for the first time. In the trial, we used to different concentrations [0 µg L-1 (Control), 200 µg L-1, 400 µg L-1, 600 µg L-1, 800 µg L-1 and 1000 µg L-1] of T. terrestris extract. Sperm motility characteristics and longevity were determined. In addition, protodioscin content of T. terrestris extract was assessed. The present study revealed that the presence of T. terrestris caused to increase in sperm motility. The increases in duration (49.00±3.61 s) and motility rate (91.67±2.89%) at 400 µg L-1 were statistically significant (p<0.05). Overall, addition of T. terrestris to activation solution can increase the sperm motility of rainbow trout.

İncele - MakaleAçık Erişim2022Scopus SJRQ3Adsorptive removal of nickel ions from wastewater by synthesized a novel biocomposite material and process optimization by response surface methodology
Ince, Muharrem; Ince, Olcay Kaplan; Alp, Hevidar
In the present study, a fixed-bed column study was performed using a novel biocomposite mate-rial, Amanita vaginata immobilized on Amberlite XAD-4 resin, to find out the adsorption behavior of nickel (Ni2+) ions from industrial wastewater. The influence of some important operating conditions including pH (3–7), biocomposite material amount (150–250 mg (XAD-4:Amanita vaginata, 5:1)) influent flow rate (4–8 mL min–1) besides Ni2+ ions initial concentration (20–40 mg L–1) on the uptake of Ni2+ solution were also optimized using a synthetic water solution. A central composite design combined with response surface methodology was utilized to maximize Ni2+ ions removal using A. vaginata immobilized on Amberlite XAD-4 resin as a biocomposite material in a column biosorption process. A mathematical model was derived from the central composite design approach for predicting responses and analysis of variance. Also, for checking model adequacy a lack of fit test was carried out. It was determined that the checked and proposed quadratic model was derived from the experimental design data. The biocomposite material adsorption capacity was calculated as 6.28 mg g–1. A high coefficient of determination (R2 = 0.9887) was presented by analysis of variance. Results confirmed that the amount of adsorbed Ni2+ amount did not change with the increase of the flow rate ratio and dose when the initial concentration of Ni2+ ions increased. The maximum adsorp-tion capacity of biocomposite material was achieved at 6.9 pH, 150.1 mg of biocomposite material amount, 7.8 mL min–1 of solution flow rate, and 39.7 mg L–1 of Ni2+ ions initial concentration. Finally, the developed method was applied to industrial wastewater to determine Ni2+ ions concentrations.

Kaplan Ince, Olcay; Ince, Muharrem; Onal, Ali
Risk assessment of cadmium (Cd) for human health play a key role because of toxic effect. Researchers are undergoing constant development for modelling approaches to make a risk assessment. It was carried out a central composite design combining with response surface modeling to optimize and modeling of Cd2+ ions in this study. Also, this study was performed to provide information about possible risk associated with alcoholic beverage consumption. Some independent process parameters including contact time and pH were chosen for optimization. Under optimal parameters, 142.9 mg g−1 was determined as Cd2+ ions removal effectiveness. Significance independent parameters and their interactions were checked using analysis of variance. These results were verified by correlation coefficients (R2 = 0.9967) of the statistical prediction. Estimated daily intake (EDI) and target hazard quotients (THQ) were calculated, to assess health risk. The Cd2+ ions EDI values (µg/day/person) were less than the recommended dietary allowance values and also, its THQ value was less than 1, also. When the obtained results compared with the levels set by regulatory authorities, the studied alcoholic beverages consumption do not pose a toxicological risk.
