Some Heavy Metals Accumulation in Tissues in Capoeta umbla (Heckel, 1843) from Uzuncayir Dam Lake (Tunceli, Turkey)

Ural, Mesut; Yildirim, Numan; Danabas, Durali; Kaplan, Olcay; Yildirim, Nuran Cikcikoglu; Ozcelik, Mehtap; Kurekci, Eylem Funda

Concentrations of metals were determined in the gills, liver, kidney, heart and muscle in Capoeta umbla caught from six stations from the Munzur River system. Metal concentrations in the tissues tended to vary significantly among stations (p < 0.05). Liver (Cu, 10.10 +/- A 0.23-23.03 +/- A 9.37 ppm; Zn, 14.67 +/- A 3.01-21.82 +/- A 2.39 ppm; Cd, 18.04 +/- A 4.56-52.69 +/- A 10.65 ppb and Fe, 28.87 +/- A 6.78-115.11 +/- A 34.87 ppm) and kidney (Cu, 1.80 +/- A 0.25-3.70 +/- A 0.62 ppm; Zn, 20.81 +/- A 0.37-29.36 +/- A 0.70 ppm; Cd, 132.06 +/- A 5.29-639.51 +/- A 20.14 ppb and Fe, 24.40 +/- A 1.98-59.39 +/- A 1.97 ppm) tissues showed higher metal concentrations than other tissues. It seems that metal contamination in the river is too high for the health of fish and the people who eat them. The geographical locations of catch, season, nature of diet, and the size of fish used for analyses might lead to different metal concentration in the same fish species.

Sequential extraction of cadmium in different soil phases and plant parts from a former industrialized area

Kaplan, Olcay; Ince, Muharrem; Yaman, Mehmet

Cd concentrations in mobile phases of soil are more representative than total Cd concentration for estimating Cd bioavailability, physicochemical reactivity and mobility. In this study, selective sequential extraction procedures were used to determine Cd in different soil phases. Soil samples and plants grown in these soils were collected from a serpentine and copper-mining area in Maden-Elazig-Turkey. The extracted fractions were exchangeable/carbonate, reducible-iron/manganese oxides, oxidizable-organic matter and sulfides, and residual phases except silicates. Concentrations of Cd in soils and plant samples were determined by flame atomic absorption spectrometry and inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry. We found that Cd concentrations in the EDTA and NH(2)OH center dot HCl extracts are higher in most soil samples compared to the other extracts. We conclude that Cd levels in mobile phases are unexpectedly high. The observed Cd concentrations are in ranges of 0.03-3.4 mg kg(-1) for soil and 0.02-2.5 mg kg(-1) for plant parts. The percentages of cadmium up to 56% in exchangeable and carbonates fractions were observed to be significantly higher than in those values less than 2% reported in literature. This study has shown that the modified extraction method can be usefully applied to determine Cd concentrations in potentially mobile phase of soil. Furthermore, it was concluded that Brassicasea and Rumex leaves can be used as hyperaccumulator plants because their translocation factor and/or enrichment coefficient values were found to be higher than 1.0.

Levels of copper in liver, muscle and gill tissues in Capoeta trutta (Heckel, 1843) from Munzur River, Turkey

    Danabas, D.; Benzer, F.; Kaplan, O.; Yildirim, N. C.

Heavy metal pollution of waters is a major environmental problem. Due to their toxicity, long persistence, bioaccumulative and nonbiodegradable properties in the food chain, heavy metals constitute a core group of aquatic pollutants. Capoeta trutta is an economically important fish and the object of significant commercial fishery in the Munzur River. Levels of Cu were measured in samples of the muscle, gill and liver tissues of C. trutta from Munzur River. In liver copper levels were higher at Station I (6.15 mg kg(-1)) polluted by domestic waste than Station II (5.48 mg kg(-1)) (P<0.05). The highest copper level (7.25 mg kg(-1)) was measured in muscle tissue at Station II. There was found no statically differences between stations in gill and muscle (P>0.05). It is suggested that ecological condition of freshwater fish and contamination levels in Munzur River must be regularly monitored.

Toxic Elements in Animal Products and Environmental Health

    Kaplan, O.; Yildirim, N. C.; Yildirim, N.; Cimen, M.

In the higher organisms, the intake of trace elements occurs mainly through the respiratory system or through the food chain. Particularly, many dangerous elements or compounds, such as metals accumulate along the food chain. In this way, the food chain becomes the main gateway for persistent toxicants to enter higher organisms. Furthermore, these toxic elements generally have an anthropogenic origin and thus their concentrations in the environment grow with the increase of urban, agricultural and industrial emissions. With increasing environmental pollution, a toxic metal exposure assessment study is necessary. Toxic elements are not metabolized at all. Some metals irreversibly are bound to body tissues, e.g., lead to bone or cadmium to kidneys. This review updates the information on carry-over of toxic substances from feed to food of animal origin (meat, organs, milk and eggs). The control of environmental contaminants that may cause residues in food of animal origin is sometimes quite difficult and expensive and is addressed with special attention in this review.

    Kaplan, O.; Yildirim, N. C.; Yildirim, N.; Akyol, E. A.

Generally, the water quality depends on its chemical and microbiological conditions. So, in this study, the chemical and microbiological characteristics of the Perisuyu River through 4 year long surveillance in Tunceli. Turkey were studied. Sampling was carried out four times during the year. Nitrate, nitrite, ammonium concentrations, total dissolved solid, total coliform counts were determined and the presence of Escherichia coli, important water quality indicator, was tested. Generally in water samples E. coli and total coliform were found very high and nitrate, nitrite and ammonium concentrations were low. In 2008 August and 2009 February water pH was higher than the World Health Organization limit value. Electrical conductivity was higher in 2004 May, December and 2008 February.

Kaplan, Olcay; Yildirim, Nuran Cikcikoglu; Yildirim, Numan; Tayhan, Nilgun

The drinking water quality is associated with the conditions of the water supply networks, the pollution and the contamination of groundwater with pollutants of both anthropogenic and natural origin. In this study, water samples were taken from four different waterworks in Tunceli, Turkey and heavy metals concentrations (As, Cu, Cd, Cr, Pb, Ni and Hg) were measured. Four sampling sites were pre-defined in different locations of the city. The obtained results showed that, the heavy metals concentrations in water samples did not exceed the values of WHO (World Health Organization), EC (Europe Community), EPA (Environment Protection Agency) and TSE-266 (Turkish Standard) guidelines.

Sequential and Selective Extraction of Copper in Different Soil Phases and Plant Parts from Former Industrialized Area

Kaplan, Olcay; Kaya, Gokce; Yaman, Mehmet

Copper (Cu) is an essential trace element for all living organisms; however, excess amounts in soil, plants, and food have negative impacts on the environment and human health. The aim of this study was to determine Cu levels in different chemical phases of soils and the relationship between Cu levels in soil phases and concentrations in plants. Soils and plants grown in these soils from an industrialized area in Turkey were analyzed using a selective and four-stage sequential extraction procedure. Copper levels in exchangeable fractions were found up to 658 mg kg(-1) while total levels were in the range of 133-5609 mg kg(-1). Copper concentrations in plant parts (roots and stem) were in the range of 2.6-240 mg kg(-1). The exchangeable forms of Cu were in the range of 3-22% of total Cu concentrations. The relationships were observed between soil Cu and Rumex plant Cu, and soil Cu and root of Brassicasea plant Cu.

SEASONAL VARIATIONS OF BIOCHEMICAL TASTE PARAMETERS IN MILKS FROM CONVENTIONAL AND ENVIRONMENT - FRIENDLY ORGANIC FARMING

    Cimen, M.; Yildirim, N.; Dikici, A.; Kaplan, O.; Yildirim, N. Cikcikoglu

CIMEN, M., N. YILDIRIM, A. DIKICI, O. KAPLAN and N. CIKCIKOGLU YILDIRIM, 2010. Seasonal variations of biochemical taste parameters in milks from conventional and environment-friendly organic farming. Bulg. J. Agric. Sci., 16: 728-732 The aim of this study is to research the milk biochemical taste components in organic (ORG) and conventional (CON) systems for different season. In study, all data were investigated for all season of 2004. Milk fat levels in both groups for summer season were lower than any other season. Average milk fat values in ORG treatment were lower than the values of CON treatment in all season except winter period. Therefore, a decrease in fat percentage for organic milk can directly lead to taste loss. Similarly, total solid rates in conventional milks in spring period were more favorable than rates in organic milk for desired taste. However, the pH value in organic milk was more acceptable for required flavor in summer season.
