Analysis of buildings in Tunceli - Pülümür district with the Canadian seismic screening method

Gundogdu, Yunus Emre; Polat, Berivan Yilmazer

This study, which was conducted in the P & uuml;l & uuml;m & uuml;r district of Tunceli, was carried out in an area with high seismic risk due to the region's proximity to the Bing & ouml;l-Yedisu Fault. In the study, the earthquake safety of the existing building stock was assessed using visual inspection methods. In this context, 172 buildings in the P & uuml;l & uuml;m & uuml;r district of Tunceli province were examined in detail in terms of earthquake safety using the Canadian Seismic Screening Method. In the analysis, seismic safety levels of the buildings, structural and nonstructural risks were taken into consideration and seismic priority indexes (SPI) were determined. The results of the study revealed that a large portion of buildings in the P & uuml;l & uuml;m & uuml;r district carry different levels of risk of earthquake. Specifically, the evaluated building stock was entirely constructed before the critical year of 2007 and exhibits high seismic vulnerability. This critical threshold is technically attributed to two main regional factors: the design practices predating the 2007 Turkish Earthquake Code and the absence of ready-mixed concrete technology in Tunceli province prior to that year. Furthermore, based on the method's classification, it is suggested that buildings with a Seismic Priority Index (SPI) greater than 20, which indicates High to Very Hazardous risk levels, should be prioritized for detailed assessment and retrofitting, and that local governments should develop incentive policies for these mitigation efforts.

Piezoelectric energy harvesters in bridge structures: Evaluation of optimal placement and energy harvesting

Sen, Bugra; Polat, Alper; Kapicioglu, Abdullah; Esen, Hikmet

In the present study, energy is harvested from vibrations in bridge structures caused by vehicle passages using piezoelectric energy harvesters (PEHs). In order to maximize the energy harvested, it was aimed to specify the optimal locations of PEHs. In the study, energy harvesting from vibrations in bridge structures was achieved using three different vehicle loads and three different piezoelectric materials. The project of the Ku & scedil;saray & imath;-2 bridge, located in Ku & scedil;saray & imath; village in Baskil, Elaz & imath;& gbreve;, was modelled in the ANSYS program using real measurements. The bridge was analyzed for modal, harmonic, and piezoelectric energy harvesting, respectively. The type with the highest energy production was determined using three different piezoelectric materials (PZT-4, PZT-5A, and PZT-8) for a total of 9 PEHs, and a total of 13 different analyses were performed under three different vehicle loads (60 kN, 90 kN, and 120 kN) to compare the results. The maximum total power obtained from all nine PEHs was 1.484 & micro;W under the 120 kN load with PZT-5A. The maximum power obtained from a single PEH (PEH-1) was 0.49 & micro;W. This power achieved will be adequate for wireless sensor systems used for monitoring the structural health of bridges, and considering that energy harvesting through vibration is independent of meteorological elements, unlike energy sources such as solar and wind, the environmental damage caused by waste batteries in existing systems will be prevented with the dissemination of these systems. With the development of these systems, the energy needs of services such as lighting and traffic signs can be supplied. The results provide an important foundation for the development of vibration-based energy harvesting systems in bridge structures. Thus, the study stands out as an innovative step toward sustainable energy generation in structural engineering.

The effect of electromagnetic fields on building materials: The case of base stations

    Baran, Zeki; Polat, Alper

This study investigates the electromagnetic field (EMF) permeability characteristics of widely used construction materials to determine their effectiveness in electromagnetic insulation against radiation emitted by base stations. Field measurements were conducted at 81 base stations located in the city center of Diyarbak & imath;r in accordance with the standards of the Information and Communication metal, lead, PVC, XPS, and recycled concrete. The results indicate that the highest average electromagnetic field intensity was measured in free-space conditions (3.37 V/m), whereas lead exhibited the most effective shielding performance with an average value of 1.01 V/m, corresponding to an attenuation of approximately 70%. Metal sheets also showed strong shielding capability with an average value of 1.29 V/m. Among conventional materials, recycled concrete demonstrated lower electromagnetic permeability (2.13 V/m) compared to standard concrete (2.60 V/m). Thickness-dependent measurements revealed that increasing recycled concrete thickness from 3 cm to 7 cm reduced electromagnetic field intensity from up to 2.93 V/m to as low as 1.64 V/m, representing a reduction of approximately 44%. Measurements conducted inside and outside the safety distance further confirmed that EMF levels outside the safety distance can be more than twice those measured inside. Overall, the findings demonstrate that material type, thickness, and safety distance play a critical role in reducing electromagnetic exposure. Recycled concrete emerges as a sustainable and effective alternative for electromagnetic shielding in building design.

Experimental investigation and numeric modelling of the impact performance of basalt fiber reinforced geopolymer concrete

    Polat, Berivan Yılmazer; Güngör, Hiranur

Geopolymer concrete (GC) has been found to have better results than Portland cement concrete (PCC), including lower carbon dioxide emissions, higher compressive strength, and greater durability. The study aims to determine the effects of basalt fiber on GC due to the impact caused by the sudden loading effect. Samples were prepared with different mixing ratios for the experimental process, with PCC used as the control sample. Basalt fibers were added to the samples in three different ratios based on optimal mixing ratios determined through physical and mechanical tests, such as UPV (Ultrasonic Pulse Velocity), compressive strength, and flexural strength. Subsequently, fibrous samples were analyzed using SEM (scanning electron microscopy) and EDS (energy dispersive spectroscopy). A drop-weight experiment was conducted on GC plates measuring 50×50×5 cm, which contained two different fiber ratios that yielded the best mechanical and physical properties. The results were analyzed using numerical modeling methods. No changes in content were made. The sample with the highest impact resistance was found to be the 2% basalt fiber-reinforced GC, with a displacement value 21.21% lower than PCC. The language used is clear, concise, and objective, with a formal register and precise word choice. The text follows a logical structure with causal connections between statements and adheres to conventional academic formatting and citation styles. The ANSYS modeling results indicated an 89.63% similarity with the experimental data regarding the displacement values. Additionally, the study demonstrated that the inclusion of basalt fiber additives enhances the impact resistance of geopolymer concrete. Furthermore, numerical modeling can predict the impact behavior of concrete to a significant extent, eliminating the need for experimental processes.

A novel inter-story drift limit proposal for TBEC2018 and fragility prognosis with TSC2007

    Onat, Onur; Yön, Burak

The basic purpose of this paper is to investigate and propose a novel inter-story drift limits for the currentTurkish Seismic Code to get easy structural assessment by using software. For this aim, numerical analysiswas performed by modeling two types of RC frame structures. One of them is 5 stories, the other of them is7 stories. Two different concrete classes, C20 and C25, were considered and three tension reinforcementratios were considered for analysis. Tension reinforcement ratios were determined by half of the compressivereinforcement, equal to compressive reinforcement and double the compressive reinforcement ratio.Incremental dynamic analyses (IDA) were performed on these buildings. In this study to execute IDA, elevenseismic acceleration benchmark records were multiplied with various scaling factors from 0.2 to 1.0.Maximum base shear and corresponding roof displacement responses obtained from IDA curves weregenerated according to these responses. IDA curves were compared with each other by deriving fragilitygraphs. According to results, proposed limits for the current Turkish seismic code (TBEC-2018) provide,0.6%, 2.4% and 3.3% respectively for MN, GV and GC, rather safe limits compared to drift limits presentedin the foredate seismic code (TSC-2007).

Investigation of the contact problem for a partial functionally gradedlayer by using finite element method

    Kaya, Y.; Polat, A.; Bora, P.; Bendine, K.; Özşahin, T.ş.

The difficulty of producing functionally graded materials (FGM) and the fact that they are more expensive than homogeneous materials emerge as an industrial problem. The starting point of this study is to investigate alternative solution methods that will contribute to the mentioned problem. In parallel, the analysis of the contact problem for a layer, which is loaded by a rigid block and resting on the elastic half plane, is presented in this paper. Only the area under the block is considered as FGM, the other parts are considered homogeneous material, unlike the studies in the literature. There is no analytical solution for this study and it is compared with the solution which is completely functionally graded (FG) layer in the literature by using finite element method (FEM). Material properties of the FG layer are defined by the macro added to the ANSYS program. The analysis for the partial FG layer were compared with the completely FG layer analysis as figures and tables, and as a result it was predicted that partial FGM could be used for the static problems and may also be practical applications in the industry.

Prediction and verification of compressive strength of historicalmasonry structures with artificial neural network

    Onat, O.; Yön, B.

Compressive strength and modulus of elasticity are the key material properties of historical structures to adapt finite element model to obtain correct structural assessment. Generally, modulus of elasticity is adapted by multiplying compressive strength of the material. In this paper, it is aimed to predict compressive strength of historical masonry buildings by using material characteristics and physical characteristics. For this purpose, 21 historical masonry mosques, churches and cathedrals were selected. Unit weight, wall thickness, height of the structure, plan area and modulus of elasticity of the selected 21 historical structures are listed as material characteristics and physical characteristics for using compressive strength prediction. Artificial Neural Network model is used to predict compressive strength of 13 different historical structures. Performance of prediction is verified by using MATLAB among all 34 total historical structures. 0.83 Rsquare is obtained from the prediction model and total prediction performance is obtained from trained data 0.97 and 0.79 from all 34 data by using MATLAB.
