Necropolitics and modernity: unveiling the ‘empire’s dirty work’ in heart of darkness, a passage to india and burmese days

    Demir, Ayşegül; Kaygisiz, Ismail

Abstract This article examines the complex interplay between modernity, colonialism, and necropolitics as represented in Heart of Darkness by Joseph Conrad, A Passage to India by E.M. Forster, and Burmese Days by George Orwell. These modernist texts not only critique the dehumanization and systemic extermination justified by colonial ideologies but also highlight the ways in which colonial power uses necropolitical strategies to govern life and death. By integrating Achille Mbembe's concept of necropolitics with Michel Foucault's theory of biopower, this analysis elucidates the racial and sovereign dynamics that both underpin and challenge colonial regimes. The paper contextualizes the relationship between modernism and colonial history, highlighting how modernist narratives reflect a crisis in the colonial agenda and embody Enlightenment ideals that have shaped the socio-political landscape of empires. These narratives offer a critical view of the dichotomy between the colonizer and the colonized, emphasizing the fractured and uncertain epistemological underpinnings of imperial logic. The examination of Conrad, Forster, and Orwell focuses on the ethical and psychological turmoil from colonial dominance, probing how colonialism justifies violence and subjugation. The study reveals how colonial powers exert necropolitical control, deciding who lives and who dies—a control that extends beyond physical dominance to the psychological colonization of minds, perpetuating colonial hegemony. Ultimately, this paper shows how modernist texts critique colonial necropolitics and expose the racial prejudices and biopolitical strategies essential for maintaining colonial regimes. These texts provide profound insights into the lasting impacts of colonialism on contemporary understandings of race, sovereignty, and resistance.

Araf'ta yaşamak: ivo andriç'in drina köprüsü romanında kullanılan 'köprü' metaforunun sınır çalışmaları bağlamında değerlendirilmesi

The politics of sports in louise page's golden girls

    Öğütcü, Murat

The 1960s and the 1970s witnessed the transition in British sports from amateurism toprofessionalism. Thereafter, sportspersons have obtained material opportunities withsponsorships and attracted entrepreneurs. However, since sponsors in this new era havebeen using sportspersons to manipulate consumer behaviour, the vested interests ofcapitalists led to the misuse of the media and medical industry at the cost of the health ofsportspersons. The commodifcation of sports has put much pressure on sportspersons forsportive success. This pressure, on the other hand, has been tried to be circumvented bythe illegal use of doping. Although sportspersons in countries of the Iron Curtain were statesponsored, thus were not pressed by entrepreneurs for sportive success, they faced asimilar pressure by their states. To show their political superiority, countries of the IronCurtain forced their sportspersons to use doping. Louise Page in her Golden Girls (1984)criticises, in a light tone, the politics of sports in the Britain of the 1980s. She looks at theresult of the transformation of sports from amateurism to professionalism, deals with thefree use of doping in Iron Curtain countries to contrast it with the illegal use of doping incapitalist Britain, and focuses on the topical issues about British sportswomen and theoppression they have felt because of their gender by the male dominated world of sports. Therefore, this article will frst give a brief history of the development of athletics in Britainfrom the 1960s onwards, then the relationship between media and sports thatcommodifes sports in the Britain of the 1980s, and lastly the use and effects of doping asthey are refected in Golden Girls.

Built on Elizabethan dramatic conventions and religious debates about ghosts, Hamletemploys linguistic and dramatic means to chill its audience. Audio-visual means, alongwith the manner of entrances and exits, are used in order to horrify the audience. Thesecreate a fuctuation between belief and disbelief towards the macabre elements in theplay, which in turn heightens the fear in the audience. Thus, through these elements, gothic catharsis is achieved, which creates cathartic horror that generates fear in theaudience. The overall sensory experience in the Early Modern amphitheatre in which theplay was enacted had a great effect on the creation of this form of catharsis. Therefore, thisarticle aims to illustrate how the Elizabethan playhouse experience affected audiencereaction towards macabre elements and triggered gothic catharsis in Hamlet.
