Private Pain, Public Ruin: Corporeal Allegories of South African Apartheid in Age of Iron

    Hotaman, İncihan

    J. M. Coetzee’s Age of Iron presents a profound exploration of the interplay between private experience and public reality within apartheid-era South Africa. This paper argues that the novel situates Mrs. Elizabeth Curren’s personal suffering, her terminal illness, and her moral awakening as a microcosm of the broader social, political, and ethical collapse of the nation. Through the epistolary form, Coetzee provides a lens into Mrs. Curren’s growing awareness of the violent oppression endured by Black South Africans, highlighting the intersections of complicity, guilt, and the consequences of historical injustice. The novel’s meticulous depiction of her deteriorating body, her decaying home, and her limited interactions with figures such as Florence serves as an allegorical reflection of South Africa’s fragmented society and failing apartheid state. Mrs. Curren’s cancer functions as both a personal and cultural symbol, embodying the cumulative effects of shame and moral repression, while her experiences in the township of Guguletu reveal the stark contrast between mediated images of reality and lived oppression. By analyzing the novel’s layering of personal illness, ethical reflection, and socio-political critique, this paper demonstrates how Coetzee transforms large-scale historical violence into intimate, embodied experience. Ultimately, Age of Iron illuminates the inextricable connection between individual conscience and collective responsibility, illustrating how witnessing oppression entails both suffering and moral reckoning. The novel’s conclusion, which signals the emergence of a new identity rather than simply marking death, underscores the potential for ethical and personal renewal even amidst systemic collapse.

Traces of schrödınger’s cat ın adalet ağaoğlu’s novel hayır

    Cuşa, Hasan

Schrödinger’s cat is a theory put forward by Austrian physicist Erwin Schrödinger in 1935. According to this theory based on the thought experiment, it is assumed that there is a cat inside a closed box and a mechanism that becomes active depending on some conditions. This mechanism consists of a radioactive atom with a 50 percent probability of deterioration and a bottle with cyanide in it. If the radioactive atom is broken, the mechanism will be triggered and the bottle will break. Therefore, the poison released from the bottle will cause the death of the cat. If this atom is not broken, the mechanism will not work and therefore the cat will continue its life from where it left off. In the context of parallel universes, the cat will be considered both alive and dead, unless observation is made in the experimental box. This experiment indicates that the impossibility of the third state is possible. In Schrödinger’s cat experiment, what matters is not whether the cat survives, but the realization that the cat is on the fine line between death and life. From this point of view, it can be said that such a similar thought experiment exists in Adalet Ağaoğlu’s novel Hayır. The purpose of this study is to reveal that Schrödinger’s cat experiment carries traces in this novel.

In the novel by tarık buğra of the national ıdeal symbolıc face: küçük ağa

    Akar, Yeliz

Changes in socio-cultural structure of nations are reflected in their literary works with all their reflections. Turkish literature includes characteristic examples that symbolize the reflective role of art as well. Especially the Turkish novel of the Republican era witnesses the adventure of being rebuilt with its structure nourished from the recent history and Anatolian people. This situation prepares the ground for the new school like the country literature that started in the 1920s and continues to the present day. After 1950, Tarık Buğra joined this school. Tarık Buğra reflects the impact of national struggle on society's memory from a different perspective. The Küçük Ağa is the symbolic expansion of this situation. Küçük Ağa is the embodied spirit of the culturally changing mindset; the author narrates the person who is strong-willed to reestablish his future against the empire's suicidal situation in the name of Küçük Ağa. In the context of the reflections of the National Struggle on literature, we have examined this study in two main sections with reference to the transformation experienced by the protagonist. In the first part, we discussed the personalized face of the concepts of the sultan and the caliphate, and in the second part, we discussed the will of the Turkish society that fought for existence by clinging to the judgmental side of the national ideal.
