A text lınguıstıcs approach to the short story “sınağrıt baba” by saıt faık
Özet
“Text” is a term frequently used both in literature and linguistics. Although there are slightly different definitions of the word, it is commonly agreed that there are certain criteria to being a text. Text linguists agree that a text must have coherence, consistency, intentionality, admissibility, contingency, informativity and intertextual connection. In the field of textual analysis, text linguistics and functional grammar aim to determine consistency relations and how paragraph structure can be designed through patterns of plot development. The two most important criteria in determining textuality and analyzing a text are coherence and consistency, which are also known as small and big scale structures. Linguistic regulations that create coherence in a small scale structure are used to show the development of the plot which enables the creation of general meaning in a big scale structure. For this reason, analysing texts in ‘structural’, ‘meaningful’ and ‘functional’ terms necessitate analyses through big scale criteria. In the present study titled “A Text Linguistics Approach to the Short Story Sinağrit Baba by Sait Faik, structuring of the text in surface structure or in other words its structural characteristics will be investigated in terms of coherence and the characteristics that reflect the general meaning of the text in the deep structure and constitute the contents of the text will be investigated in terms of consistency. How textual linguistic coherence and consistency are realized in the text in the short story “Sinağrit Baba” will be evaluated with examples from the story
