Medicinal plants have been used by humans for the treatment of various diseases for thousands of years from past to present. Members of the Lamiaceae family are among the most preferred medicinal plants due to the wide variety of secondary components they contain, particularly essential oils. In this review, Master’s and PhD theses and books based on ethnobotanical studies investigated between 1960 and 2021 as well as internationally recognized databases (PubMed, Scopus, Google Scholar, Web of Science, SciFinder, Springer and Elsevier) were used to determine the medicinal uses of Lamiaceae taxa among the people in Turkey. As a result of the study, it was found that a total of 221 taxa (192 species) belonging to 29 genera, 51 of which are endemic, have medicinal/therapeutic uses. The local names of these taxa, the usage which are used among the people, the diseases in which they are used, and the geographical regions given in the present study. The genera of taxa most commonly used for medicinal purposes by the local people are Salvia (37 taxa), Sideritis (25 taxa), Stachys (22 taxa), Thymus (16 taxa) and Origanum (13 taxa). It was observed that the most frequently used two methods while preparing these plants for use was infusion (61%), and decoction (24%). Studies conducted on National (TURK, BHP), Regional (EU) and International Pharmacopoeias (WHO) and various monographs (AHP, COMISSION E, EMA, ESCOP, PDR) have revealed that there are 29 taxa included in these pharmacopoeias and monographs whose purpose of use are similar to the diseases that local people are trying to treat. Diseases that people use plants for therapeutic purposes are grouped into 12 categories. It was determined that these plants were widely used for therapeutic purposes in gastric disorders as well as otolaryngology and respiratory system diseases. This review briefly discusses whether some taxa commonly used by the local people in the treatment of diseases can be useful in the treatment of the disease in question, in the light of scientific studies.

Reviewing Phlomis rigida Labill From Turkey as a Antimicrobial Efficacy

Sönmez, Pınar Erecevit; Kirbağ, Sevda; Çakilcioğlu, Uğur

This work researched the inhibitory properties of the extract of Phlomis rigida Labill plant including chloroform on gram-negative and positive bacteria, yeasts and dermatophyta; the related plant is used for therapeutic purpose in public. For the disk diffusion method, this extract is effective on Pseudomonas aeruginosa that is one of the negative bacterias by 11.33 ± 0.57 mm inhibition areas. Regarding other bacterias, the effect of the related extract is so low in avoiding the improvement of Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus aureus and Bacillus megaterium by 8.33 ± 0.57 mm inhibition area. It has highly effective on Trichopyton sp. and Candida albicans that are from dermatophytes fungis and yeast by 16.33 ± 0.57 mm inhibition area. About yeast and dermatophytes fungi it has a remarkable impact on Candida glabrata (14.33 ± 0.57 mm inhibition area), Epidermophyton sp. (12.33 ± 0.57 mm inhibition area). Antimicrobial activity of this natural extract against all the microorganisms that were tested by MIC method by concentrations vary by 100 uL and 6.25 uL. Acording to this; the results showed good inhibitory effect with 6.25 μL for C. albicans, Trichophyton sp. with 12.25 μL for C. glabrata. In the other hand it is effective with 25 μL for P. aeruginosa, Epidermophyton sp. with 50 μL for E. coli, S. aureus, B. megaterium. Being used plants for medical purposes as from since the early ages show that these plants can be used as alternatives of available antibiotics; including important medical components is the other reason for being an alternative at the same time. Concerning results, P. rigida can be utilized as a therapeutic drug for the healing of infections caused by microorganisms. In this study, we believe that the P. rigida is important in the search for new antibiotics and will contribute to the literature and the world of drug as it affects different types of microorganisms at the lowest level for the first time.

An ethnobotanical survey of medicinal plants in ballakayati (Erbil, north Iraq)

Kawarty, Awara Mohammed A.M.A.; Behçet, Lütfi; Çakilcioğlu, Uğur

This study aims to identify wild plants used for medical purposes by local people of the Ballakayati district of Erbil in North Iraq, and to determine the local names and uses of those plants. The study was carried out for approximately 3 years between 2016 and 2018. During this period of time, 85 plant specimens were collected. Demographic characteristics of the participants, names of the local plants, used parts of these plants and their preparation methods were investigated and recorded. In the literature analysis of the plants used in this study, 85 plants were found to be used for medicinal purposes while 3 plants were not found in the literature records. Local plant names differ due to local dialects in North Iraq. Locals benefit from the wild plants growing in their districts. In this area, it was found that locals use 85 plants from 38 families for curative purposes. The medicinal plants were used for the treatment of many diseases, mostly for the treatment of a cold, shortness of breath, and heart and gastrointestinal diseases. It was determined that the plants we identified in this study were used directly or as infusion or decoction. The most considerable medicinal plants were Mentha longifolia (L.) L. subsp. noeana (Briq.) Briq. (UV:0.38), Urtica dioica L. (UV:0.38). Furthermore, plants used for medicinal purposes are dried and stored for using them in winter. The medicinal use of Rhaponticum repens (L.) Hidalgo and Tanacetum polycephalum Sch.Bip. subsp. argyrophyllum (K.Koch) Podlech. that we found in this area were recorded for the first time. Different use of those plants were observed in this study.

Morphological, anatomical and cytological investigations on three taxa of Centaurea L. (Asteraceae) from Turkey

Tasar, Neslihan; Doğan, Gülden; Kiran, Yaşar; Oliur Rahman, M.; Çakilcioğlu, Uğur

Morphological, anatomical and cytological features of three Turkish taxa of Centaurea L., viz. C. polypodiifolia Boiss. var. polypodiifolia, C. urvillei DC. subsp. urvillei and C. urvillei subsp. armata Wagenitz were investigated. Stem anatomy revealed the presence of a thick cuticle layer outside the stem, and epidermis with dense hairs was observed in the lower part. Investigation on leaf anatomy showed that different types of hairs on the outside of the leaf were very intense. Palisade parenchyma was observed below the upper and lower epidermis. In Centaurea polypodiifolia var. polypodiifolia, chromosome number was found to be 2n=16, while in C. urvillei subsp. urvillei and C. urvillei subsp. armata 2n=20. Total karyotype length of C. polypodiifolia var. polypodiifolia, C. urvillei subsp. urvillei and C. urvillei subsp. armata was 22.9 μm, 37.84 μm and 40.01 μm, respectively. Among the investigated taxa the karyotype asymmetry index was found lowest in C. urvillei subsp. armata. Satellite was detected in C. urvillei subsp. urvillei and subsp. armata, while it was absent in C. polypodiifolia Boiss. var. polypodiifolia.
