This study explores the phytochemical composition and antimicrobial potential of Palustriella commutata, Philonotis calcarea, Cinclidotus riparius, Rhynchostegium riparioides, Plagiomnium ellipticum, and Porella platyphylla, with a focus on bryophyte species phenolic constituents and biological activities. HPLC analysis identified seven phenolic acids (4-hydroxybenzoic acid, 2,5-dihydroxybenzoic acid, 3,4-dihydroxybenzoic acid, caffeic acid, vanillic acid, syringic acid, and p-coumaric acid) across all species in varying concentrations. In in vitro antimicrobial tests, the bryophyte extracts used showed significant activity against Pseudomonas aeruginosa (ATCC 9027), while exhibiting relatively lower inhibition against Staphylococcus aureus (ATCC 25923). The study showed that all species extracts exhibited comparable activity to erythromycin against P. aeruginosa, while Cinclidotus riparius and Plagiomnium ellipticum extracts showed no activity against S. aureus, and the remaining species exhibited lower activity compared to erythromycin. Molecular docking studies demonstrated strong binding affinities of these phenolics to the active site of the target macromolecule (PDB ID: 3FRQ), suggesting meaningful interactions with residues such as ARG122 and ASN123, similar to erythromycin binding patterns. The findings indicate that bryophyte-derived phenolic compounds possess significant antimicrobial potential and may serve as promising candidates for the development of novel bioactive agents. This study provides a broad framework for the insufficiently researched antimicrobial potential of bryophytes by establishing direct links between species-specific phenolic fingerprints, experimentally observed antibacterial activities, and predicted receptor-level interactions. Further complementary biological studies are needed to confirm and expand upon these results.

The Moss Flora of Fırat University Central Campus (Elazığ-Türkiye)

Alataş, Mevlüt; Şahin, Harun; Çambay, Zafer

In this study, the moss flora of Fırat University Central Campus was investigated. As a result of the identification of moss specimens collected from syudy area in different vegetation periods of 2021 and 2023, total of 37 taxa belonging to 8 families and 19 genera were determined. From these taxa, 11 for Elazıg province and 6 for B9 grid square according to the grid-square system of Henderson (1961) are new records. The rich families in terms of number of taxa are Pottiaceae (17), Bryaceae (6) and Orthotrichaceae (5). In addition, the most taxa within the floristic list are xerophyt, photophyt and subneutrophyt.

Reactive oxygen species have been considered to play a significant part in the development of fluorosis, a critical public health issue in many parts of the world. OBJECTIVES: The aims of this study, conducted on two groups of sheep, with and without fluorosis, was (i) to determine the effect of fluorosis on antioxidant enzymes, such as superoxide dismutase (SOD), glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px), catalase (CAT), and on malondialdehyde (MDA); and (ii) to investigate the relationship between the SOD, CAT, and GSH-Px genotypes and the antioxidant enzyme levels. METHODS: The two groups of sheep were: (i) 24 Akkaraman sheep with fluorosis living in Dogubeyazit province of Agri and (ii) 20 Akkaraman sheep with no signs of fluorosis living in Van. The MDA level and the antioxidant enzyme activities were identified spectrophometrically. The genotype characteristics were determined by the PCR-RFLP method using DNA extracted from blood. RESULTS: Compared to the control sheep without fluorosis, we found in the fluorotic sheep: (i) an increase in plasma MDA levels and GSH-Px-1 activity (p<0.05), and (ii) a decrease in SOD and CAT activities (p<0.01). There were significant differences found in the genotype and allele frequencies in both groups (p<0.01). CONCLUSIONS: Fluoride-induced oxidative stress affected the membrane structure resulting in elevated erythrocyte MDA levels and reduced enzyme activity of the enzymes SOD and CAT. According to our data, the gene polymorphisms show a tendency towards fluorosis for our local sheep population.
