The antioxidant activity, total phenolic content, enzyme inhibition, anticancer properties of Achillea millefolium L. (yarrow), which is generally consumed by humans as herbal tea, were investigated. Yarrow extracts were prepared with different extraction techniques and solvents and the optimum conditions were determined. When the antioxidant activity and total phenolic content results were evaluated, the best yield was obtained with ultrasound-assisted extraction for all solvents. Moreover, the yields from highest to lowest were methanol, water, and acetonitrile. The enzyme inhibition and anticancer of Achillea millefolium L. extracts using methanol were evaluated. The IC50 values for the inhibition of xanthine oxidase and acetylcholinesterase were 4.974 ± 0.54 and 21.891 ± 1.118 µg/mL, respectively. The extract concentration was determined to be 23.85 μg/mL for 50% reduction in growth inhibitory activity cell viability (IC50) against breast cancer (MCF-7).

Investigation of mineral components and antioxidant properties of a healthy red fruit: Cornelian Cherry (Cornus mas L.)

Karaaslan, Merve Goksin; Karaaslan, Nagihan M.; Ates, Burhan

The mineral components of the foodstuff consumed by an individual are important in the growth and development of a human being. In recent years red fruits, because of their potential beneficial health effects, are getting attention of both consumers and manufacturers. One of the red fruits, Cornelian cherry (Cornus mas L.), was investigated in terms of both mineral components and antioxidant properties. The mineral components include calcium (Ca), iron (Fe), potassium (K), magnesium (Mg), and zinc (Zn) in this fruit were determined using flame atomic absorption spectrometry (FAAS). The antioxidant activity tests were applied to the extracts obtained using different solvents to examine the antioxidant properties of this fruit. Statistical analysis indicated that while the best results were obtained from acetone extracts, the lowest results were obtained from water extracts for all antioxidant activity tests (p<0.05). The best average values for DPPH and ABTS radical scavenging capacity, reducing power, total phenolic content and total flavonoid content in acetone extracts were found to be 1053.72±38.12 mg TEAC/100 g FW and 2907.34±152.05 mg TEAC/100 g FW, 5894.99±251.05 mg TEAC/100 g FW, 2979.25±69.40 mg GAE/100 g FW and 255.75±14.92 mg QE/100 g FW, respectively.

THE EFFECTS OF REACTIVE PHTHALOCYANINE BLUE TEXTILE DYE ON PEROXIDASE ACTIVITY, LIPID PEROXIDATION AND TOTAL CHLOROPHYLL CONTENT OF PHASEOLUS VULGARIS L. CV. GINA

Kaya, Armagan; Yigit, Emel; Akbulut, Gulcin Beker; Ates, Burhan

In this study, the effects of Reactive Phthalocyanine Blue (RPB) changes on peroxidase, malondialdehyde (MDA) content and total chlorophyll content of Phaseolus vulgaris L. (bean) were examined. The beans were exposed to different concentrations of RPB between 200-1255 mg/L. In the analyzed plants, different effects were observed on peroxidase activity. When compared to the control group, a significant decrease was identified in the plants which were treated with RPB except for the 1255 mg/L application group. Besides the effects of RPB on MDA content were analyzed. MDA content was found to be lower in all application groups except for 439 mg/L. In addition, total chlorophyll content increased in all application groups except for 338 mg/L when compared to the control group. These findings indicated that RPB caused significant changes in peroxidase activity, MDA content and total chlorophyll. It was shown that the textile dye had a toxic effect on the plants.
