Essential Oil Composition of Two Grammosciadium DC Species, G. platycarpum (Boiss et Hausskn) Schischk and G. macrodon Boiss (Apiaceae), from Turkey

Yüce, Ebru; Paksoy, Mehmet Yavuz; Bagci, Eyup

Purpose: To investigate and compare the essential oil composition of two Grammosciadium species obtained by hydrodistillation Methods: The essential oil of the aerial parts of two species was obtained by hydrodistillation and analyzed by gas chromatography (GC) and gas chromatography - mass spectrometry (GC-MS). Results: In G. platycarpum, twenty-seven compounds were identified representing 99.3 % of the total oil. The major constituents of the oil were limonene (28.4 %), beta-pinene (16.1 %), beta-selinene (15.9 %), delta-3-carene (11.2 %), alpha-farnesene (6.0 %) and p - cymene (4.7 %). The oil of G. macrodon contained thirty-seven components representing 94.4 % of the total oil, with caryophyllene oxide (15.9 %), germacrene - D (12.4 %), beta-caryophyllene (11.5 %), delta-3 - carene (10.1 %) and cyclohexane (4.6 %) as the main constituents. Conclusion: The essential oil composition of G. macrodon was analysed for the first time, the most abundant constituents being caryophyllene oxide, and cyclohexane.

Antimicrobial Activity of the Methanol Extracts and Essential Oil with the Composition of Endemic Origanum acutidens (Lamiaceae)

Gulec, Azime Kucukgul; Erecevit, Pinar; Yuce, Ebru; Arslan, Ali; Bagci, Eyup; Kirbag, Sevda

The chemical composition of hydro distilled essential oil from Origanum acutidens (Hand. and Mazz.) Ietswaart was collected from Tunceli (Turkey) were analyzed by GC and GC-MS. Essential oil and methanol extract of Origanum acutidens were tested against Yersinia ruckeri (ATCC 29473), Aeromonas hydrophila (ATCC 607920), Lactococcus garviae (ATCC 43921) Staphylococcus aureus (ATCC 29213) fish pathogenic bacterial strains. The analysis of the essential oil of Origanum acutidens showed the presence of 6 components accounting for 93.8 % of the total amount. Calvacrol (61.8 %), p-cymene (15.5 %) and thymol (12.7 %) that possessed antimicrobial activity were found as the major component. The final concentrations of the methanol extract and the essential oil were determined by using disk diffusion assay. Mean inhibition zones of bacterial strains for Origanum acutidens essential oil varied from 28.0 +/- 1.2 and 36.7 +/- 0.7 mm. The inhibition zones of methanol extract (10 mu L and 20 mu L) of Origanum acutidens against bacterial strains were in the range 8.7 +/- 0.7 - 11.0 +/- 0.6 mm and 12.7 +/- 0.67 - 22.7 +/- 1.3 mm, respectively. Our results suggest that both the methanol extract and the essential oil of Origanum acutidens may be valuable as potential antibacterial agents against the major fish pathogens.

The essential oils of the aerial parts of two Hypericum taxa (Hypericum triquetrifolium and Hypericum aviculariifolium subsp depilatum var. depilatum (Clusiaceae)) from Turkey

    Yuce, Ebru; Bagci, Eyup

In this study, essential oil compositions of two Hypericum L. taxa (Hypericum triquetrifolium Turra. and Hypericum aviculariifolium Jaub. et Spach subsp. depilatum var. depilatum (Freyn et Bornm.) Robson) naturally grown in Turkey were determined using gas chromatography and gas chromatography-mass spectrometry systems. The essential oils were obtained by hydrodistillation from the aerial parts of plants. A total of 45 compounds were identified in the essential oils of H. triquetrifolium; 1-hexanal (18.8%), 3-methylnonane (12.5%) and alpha-pinene (12.3%). In this study, 41 components were identified in H. aviculariifolium subsp. depilatum var. depilatum oil; alpha-pinene (52.1%), germacrene D (8.5%) and beta-pinene (3.6%) were the predominant constituents. The essential oil analysis showed that monoterpene concentrations were higher than that of the sesquiterpenes in both oils. The results were discussed in the meaning of the usefulness of these plants and their chemicals as natural products and potential usage in chemotaxonomy.

Constituents of the Essential Oils of Two Hypericum capitatum Choisy Varieties (var. capitatum and var. luteum Robson) from Turkey

    Bagci, Eyup; Yuce, Ebru

The essential oils from the aerial parts of two varieties (var. capitatum and var. luteum Robson) of Hypericum capitatum (Sect. Drosanthe) grown in Turkey were analyzed by GC and GC-MS. Forty-eight compounds were identified in the essential oils of var. capitatum with alpha-pinene (20.3 %), caryophyllene oxide (11.8 %), hexadecanoic acid (8.9 %), beta-caryophyllene (6.5 %) and undecane (3.8 %) as main constituents. Thirty-eight components were identified in the oil of var. luteum with camphor (15.3 %), germacrene D (10.5 %), beta-myrcene (7.4 %), caryophyllene oxide (6.5 %) and beta-cububene (6.3 %), as the abundant components. More quantitative and qualitative differences were determined between two varieties of H. capitatum essential oils. The results were discussed in means of renewable resources and chemotaxonomy.
