Gulec, Azime Kucukgul; Danabas, Durali; Ural, Mesut; Seker, Engin; Arslan, Ali; Serdar, Osman

The aim of study was to compare the effects of supplementation of food with herbal oils (Thymus vulgaris and Foeniculum vulgare) on biochemical properties and electrolytes of rainbow trout infected with Yersinia ruckeri. In total, 120 healthy fish (mean weight 84 +/- 1.02 g) were equally divided into four experimental groups. The experimental study was carried out for one week. The first group was control without supplementation and infection, the second group was infected and without oil supplementation, the third group was supplemented with oils (10 ml.100 g(-1) rates) for one week and infected with Y ruckeri and the last group was oil supplemented without infection. Results indicated that fish fed with dietary supplements showed enhanced bactericidal activity, total protein, albumin, cholesterol, triglyceride and bilirubin compared to the control (P < 0.05). As the value of herbal oils was increased in diets, the plasma glucose level decreased. The levels of K, Na, Ca, and Mg increased whereas Cl values decreased, compared to the control. It can be concluded that diet supplementation with herb oils used in this study can increase disease resistance by increasing levels of some biochemical parameters and electrolytes in rainbow trout to Y ruckeri infection.

Aksu, Onder; Gulec, Azime Kucukgul; Demir, Veysel; Danabas, Durali; Yildirim, Numan; Ozcelik, Mehtap; Can, Erkan; Kocabas, Mehmet

This study is aimed to determine the bioaccumulation of copper and zinc in hemolymph of freshwater crayfish (Astacus leptodactylus) fed with zebra mussel (Dreissena polymorpha) collected from Keban Dam Lake. This is the first study on bioaccumulation of Cu and Zn in hemolymph of males and females of A. leptodactylus. The average concentrations of Cu and Zn in the hemolymph samples were found out as 0.54 and 35.07 ppm respectively for male and 0.42 and 15.59 ppm respectively for female control freshwater crayfish. The levels of Zn in the hemolymph of both male and female ones among control and diet groups were statistically significant (P < 0.05). The Cu levels among control and diet groups in female ones were statistically significant (P < 0.05) but not in the male ones (P > 0.05). The results of current study revealed that feed treatment with boiling was not effective at the levels of metal bioaccumulation in hemolymph. It was observed that this metal bioaccumulation is more related with sex differences.

Some Heavy Metals Accumulation in Tissues in Capoeta umbla (Heckel, 1843) from Uzuncayir Dam Lake (Tunceli, Turkey)

Ural, Mesut; Yildirim, Numan; Danabas, Durali; Kaplan, Olcay; Yildirim, Nuran Cikcikoglu; Ozcelik, Mehtap; Kurekci, Eylem Funda

Concentrations of metals were determined in the gills, liver, kidney, heart and muscle in Capoeta umbla caught from six stations from the Munzur River system. Metal concentrations in the tissues tended to vary significantly among stations (p < 0.05). Liver (Cu, 10.10 +/- A 0.23-23.03 +/- A 9.37 ppm; Zn, 14.67 +/- A 3.01-21.82 +/- A 2.39 ppm; Cd, 18.04 +/- A 4.56-52.69 +/- A 10.65 ppb and Fe, 28.87 +/- A 6.78-115.11 +/- A 34.87 ppm) and kidney (Cu, 1.80 +/- A 0.25-3.70 +/- A 0.62 ppm; Zn, 20.81 +/- A 0.37-29.36 +/- A 0.70 ppm; Cd, 132.06 +/- A 5.29-639.51 +/- A 20.14 ppb and Fe, 24.40 +/- A 1.98-59.39 +/- A 1.97 ppm) tissues showed higher metal concentrations than other tissues. It seems that metal contamination in the river is too high for the health of fish and the people who eat them. The geographical locations of catch, season, nature of diet, and the size of fish used for analyses might lead to different metal concentration in the same fish species.

Determination of Metal (Cu, Zn, Se, Cr and Cd) Levels in Tissues of the Cyprinid Fish, Capoeta trutta (Heckel, 1843) from Different Regions of Keban Dam Lake (Euphrates-Turkey)

    Danabas, Durali; Ural, Mesut

The aim of this study was to evaluate Copper (Cu), Zinc (Zn), Selenium (Se), Chromium (Cr) and Cadmium (Cd) concentrations in liver, muscle, gills and kidney tissues of Capoeta trutta collected from four sites of Keban Dam Lake, Turkey. The highest heavy metal level in all tissues was for Zn, while Cd was the lowest. The lowest heavy metal levels were generally found at Station 4 (Agin) for all tissues (p < 0.05). There were statistically significant differences among stations for Cu, Zn, Cr and Se in gills; for Cu, Zn, Se and Cr in liver and kidney; and Cu, Zn and Cr in muscle (p < 0.05). Cadmium concentrations did not differ between sites for any of the tissues. Turkish Food Codex sets the maximum limits of Zn, Cu and Cd as, 50, 20 and 0.05 mg kg(-1) dry weight, respectively, in the muscle of fish used for human consumption. In our study, the level of Zn was higher than Turkish permissible limits only at Station 3 (Guluskur). Cadmium levels were much higher than permissible limits at three stations [S1 (Pertek), S2 (Kockale) and S3], whereas Cu levels were within permissible limits in all stations.

EFFECTS OF ZEOLITE (Clinoptilolite) ON SOME WATER AND GROWTH PARAMETERS OF RAINBOW TROUT (Oncorhynchus mykiss WALBAUM, 1792)

    Danabas, Durali; Altun, Tulay

The effects of zeolite (Clinoptilolite (CL)) added into pond water, on some water and growth parameters of rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss Walbaum, 1792), were investigated, in the present study. CL was added into water by 0 (control), 1, 2, 3 mg l(-1) rates and carried out in 100 days. The results of the study showed that average body weights of fish in group were respectively, 128.242 +/- 4.748 g, 126.623 +/- 5.545 g, 126.349 +/- 0.339 g and 126.556 +/- 7.663 g and average total lengths were 21.870 +/- 0.355 cm, 21.340 +/- 0.341 cm, 21.783 +/- 0.255 cm and 21.191 +/- 0.193 cm. However, there was no statistical difference among groups for all parameters (P>0.05). At the end of the study, there was no statistical difference among groups for water parameters (P>0.05), but an obvious decreasing was observed in nitrate rates during study and in ammonium and nitrite rates during only first period.

Danabas, Durali; Yildirim, Nuran Cikcikoglu; Gulec, Azime Kucukgul; Yildirim, Numan; Kaplan, Olcay

Fishes are largly used for the assessment of aquatic environment quality and are accepted as bioindicators of environmental pollution. This study evaluated haematological and biochemical responses of Capoeta trutta captured in Munzur River, Tunceli, Turkey. Blood and biochemical parameters (Sodium (Na), Potassium (K), Calcium (Ca), Phosphorus (P), Chlorine (Cl) and Iron (Fe)) were determined. The values of Red Blood Cell (RBC) Haemoglobin (Hb), Haemotocrit (Ht), Haemoglobin Concentration (MCHC), Platelet Count (PLT), Mean Platelet Volume (MPV), Plateletcrit (PCT), Platelet Distribution Width (PDW) from examined haematological parameters were found as 0.67+/-0.09 10(12) L(-1), 13.5+/-0.90 g dL(-1), 14.78+/-0.19%, 218.40+/-4.29 fL, 194.75+/-15.36 pg 108.52+/-1.09 g dL(-1), 34.12+/-5.89 10(9)L(-1), 11.92+/-1.65 fL, 0.061+/-0.01% and 19.77+/-1.71 fL, respectively. The values of Fe, Cl, P, Ca, K and Na from examined biochemical parameters were determined as 91.75+/-28.27 g dL(-1), 92.00+/-4.02 mmol L(-1), 13.20+/-1.26mg dL(-1), 11.65+/-0.74 mmol L(-1), 1.30+/-0.21 mmol L(-1) and 132.5+/-3.90 mg dL(-1) respectively. Observation of blood parameters allows the most rapid detection of changes in fish after the exposure to xenobiotics. It can conclude that hematological and biochemical parameters could be ranked as possible biomarkers of pollution.
