In the present work, Homalothecium sericeum biomass was used for removal of Co(II) from aqueous solution. The effects of process parameters (contact time, biosorbent amount, and initial Co(II) con-centration) on the response (Co(II) % removal) were investigated using a batch adsorption system optimized with response surface methodology/central composite design method. Under optimized conditions the maximum Co(II) removal efficiency achieved is 94.07% at an initial Co(II) concentration of 2.05 mg/L, a H. sericeum amount of 0.34 g/50 mL, and a process time of 36.09 min. In this study, the toxicity of the medium after biosorption carried out under optimized conditions was also tested with Daphnia magna bioassay. When mortality results with D. magna were evaluated, although a removal efficiency of 94.07% was obtained after biosorption, this was not sufficient to reduce mortality of D. magna.

- MakaleAçık Erişim2021Removal of Chemical Oxygen Demand, Total Organic Carbon and Color from Textile Industry Wastewater by Using Phanerochaete chrysosporium (ME446)
Erguven, Gokhan Onder; Yildirim, Numan; Çelik, Aytekin
Wastewater discharge from textile industries concern environmental risks. Superiority of microbial methods over other high cost combined methods includes conversion of persistent organic materials to non-toxic last materials, sustainability, low cost, and comfortable. Textile wastewaters can have opposite effects on the quality of water in total organic carbon (TOC) and Chemical oxygen demand (COD). Agitation cultures can reach the surface area of the dyes, whereas a static cannot do. Biotreatment of textile wastewater from the dyeing process using white-rot fungus Phanerochaete chrysosporium (P.C) was investigated in agitated and static culture conditions. Dye is the major pollutant component in this wastewater includes some different organic pollutants. The treatment mediums containing distilled water in 1:10 ratio of wastewater were compared for treatment efficiency of P.C. Especially in agitated conditions at 27 oC and 150 rpm, it was achieved a successful treatment results. Under these conditions, a 48h long treatment reduced by 91,46 % of the original COD (from 1484 mg l-1) and by 94,92% the TOC (initial was 723.66 mg l-1). Moreover, treatment reduced color by 86,28 % from 3.550 A540 to 0.487 A540 at the end of the study. The decolorization properties of P.C obtained high performance and we determined P.C showed up to effective removal rate for COD and TOC within 48 hours. We suggest that these fungus pellets of P.C can reach the decolorization and can be a useful tool for bioremediation of textile dye wastewater within a short time period.

The research study was about revealing the biochemical response of Gammarus pulex related to insecticide methomyl before and after bioremediation by two soil bacteria species, Ochrobactrum thiophenivorans and Sphingomonas melonis. Catalase (CAT), glutathione S-transferase.(GST), cytochrome. P4501A1 (CYP1A1) activities in G. Pulex related to methomyl solution were investigated in 24 h and 96 h. ELISA method was used for test studies. CAT enzyme was decreased in Gammarus pulex that was exposed to methomyl after all exposure period (P < 0.05). CAT activities were returned to control results after bioremediation assays. GST enzyme activity was decreased depending on methomyl exposure during 24 h but increased during 4 days (P < 0.05). After 8 days of bioremediation period, GST activity increased again during 24 h while decreased during 4 days (P < 0.05). CYP1A1 activity increased in Gammarus pulex that was exposed to methomyl after all exposure period (P > 0.05). After bioremediation, statistically significant changes were not revealed in CYP1A1 activities (P > 0.05). According to the results of our study, CYP1A1, CAT, and GST activities in G. pulex sanctioned the capability of Ochrobactrum thiophenivorans and Sphingomonas melonis in methomyl bioremediation. Isolated and enriched Ochrobactrum thiophenivorans and Sphingomonas melonis that were added to 2.5 ppb concentrations of methomyl for 8 days. Spatio-temporal variation of the total and fecal coliform groups as bacteriological indicators in the marine environment was investigated in surface water of the Golden Horn Estuary in monthly intervals between June 2012 and May 2013. Temperature, salinity, Secchi depth, pH, dissolved oxygen and oxygen saturation were measured at 10 stations simultaneously with bacteriological analyses. Highest total coliform counts in surface water was 940×103 CFU/100 ml at the Alibeykoy Creek in November and highest fecal coliform was 178×103 CFU/100 ml at the same area in October. The lowest coliform counts were observed during summer, while the highest counts were in autumn. During rainy days, some domestic wastewater overflowing from sewerages are discharged to the estuary, which those water adversely affect water quality. The total and fecal coliform counts in surface water increased gradually from the lower to upper section of the estuary. Although the Black Sea water pumping from the Strait of Istanbul to the Golden Horn by Kagithane Creek is an important factor in the decrease of pollution and better water quality, there are still some runoff materials including uncontrolled discharges particularly in the Alibeykoy Creek. The results of this study showed that that the bacteriological pollution increased due to municipal wastewater resulting from overflow after the precipitation and the surrounding waters of the Golden Horn basin mix with surface waters. Thus, the most important factor in order to decrease the bacteriological pollution is to provide a full control of the surface discharges.
