This comprehensive research has been conducted to consider the distribution of PTEs in the surface sediments of a recently developed Dar-e-Allo copper mine in dependence on the potential ecological and human health risks. Field sampling was carried out discreetly at preselected sampling spots including the natural background, the streams around the mine, waste rock drainages, evaporative deposits, sediments containing Fe oxy-hydroxides and secondary phases. Distribution of target elements (Al, As, Cd, Co, Cr, Cu, Fe, Mn, Mo, Ni, Pb, S, Sb, Se, and Zn) showed high levels of crustal elements. As regards, Fe, Al, and S are identified to exist as the most copious elements in the earth's crust, so have the major portion of potentially toxic elements (PTEs) in the sediment concentrations. Evaluating environmental indices reflected that in general, Cu, S, and Mo have a higher quota of contamination in sedimentary systems. the pollution load index (PLI), modified contamination degree (mCd), Contamination factor (C-f), Sediment potential index (SPI), Geo-accumulation index (I-geo) and Contamination degree (C-d) confirm that sedimentary systems of mining area are heavily contaminated by PTEs and were not found within the guideline acceptable values. The potential ecological risk index (PERI) displayed a high or severe risk level for Cu with a peak in green-blue sediments containing secondary minerals. The results of total carcinogenic risk (TCRs) show that As has high toxicity level and carries a risk of carcinogenicity among children and adults. The TCRs for Cd, Cr, Ni, and Pb with carcinogenic potential are found only in children and they are classified as the prime concern elements that have serious dangers to children's public health. The results of contamination source presumed that the sources of PTEs contamination were principally geogenic along with the anthropogenic sources in the study area. Therefore, the present study has highlighted the implication of human health risks of PTEs in sedimentary systems of copper mining, also will grant advice for prime stakeholders, including mine managers, Environmental Protection Agency, the government and public organizations in connection to protecting the environment, aquatic biota and consumer's health.

Electrochemical behaviour of cross-linker glutaraldehyde as a receptor for carbaryl biosensor

    Ipek, Yeliz

Glutaraldehyde (GA) is a famous cross-linker that is used for immobilization of enzyme or biologic material on electrochemical biosensor electrodes. It has an important role in pesticide biosensor studies. Because of the inhibitor effect of pesticides on acetylcholine esterase enzyme (AChE), it is generally immobilized on the electrode by cross-linking method. Glutaraldehyde is used as cross-linker agent to immobilize the enzyme on the electrode surface. Acetylcholine esterase activity is inhibited by pesticides or other neurotoxic compounds. This inhibition helps us to detect the pesticide residual. Although numerous electrochemical pesticide biosensors are based on generally the immobilization of the enzyme in the literature, an enzymeless biosensor based on GA has been developed in this study for the first time. Enzyme biosensors have high cost and needs special storage conditions. In this study, glutaraldehyde detected the carbaryl pesticide as sensitive as an acetylcholine esterase enzyme biosensor. The biosensor electrode was constructed with coating GA on glassy carbon electrode (GCE). Thus, it is a simple, low cost and practical method for pesticide detection in the water samples with low detection limit of 5x10(-9) mol L--(1).

Effect of surfactant types on particle size and morphology of flame-retardant zinc borate powder

    Ipek, Yeliz

Zinc borate is a boron-containing chemical material that is used to increase the flame retardancy of polymeric materials, dyes, cables, fabrics, carpets, and the internal parts of automobiles and planes. Commercially used zinc borate, which has the formula of 2ZnO·3B2O3·7H2O, has a particle size between 10 and 20 μm. However, recent studies have shown that nanosized flame retardants have more superior flame retardancy and less negative effects on mechanical properties than microsized flame retardants. Nanosized flame retardants disperse more homogeneously and even low quantities are sufficient to provide high flame resistance. In this study, nano zinc borate powder was synthesized by a wet chemical method and the effects of nonionic, anionic, and cationic surfactants on the particle size and morphology of the zinc borate particles were investigated. Chemical purity and physical structures of the synthesized zinc borate powder were analyzed by XRD, FTIR, TG-DTA, TEM, and Zetasizer. The analysis results showed that the zinc borate powder had a chemical formula of 2ZnO·3B2O3·7H2O. TEM and Zetasizer results indicated that the nano zinc borate powder, which had nanoscale particle size distribution with needle- and flake-like structures, was synthesized using nonionic, anionic, and cationic surfactants.
