Micromorphology and anatomy of six Onosma L. species, viz. O. argentata Hub.Mor., O. neglecta Riedl, O. proballanthera Rech. f, O. rechingeri Riedl, O. sericea Willd. and O. stenoloba Hausskn. ex Riedl from Turky were investigated. Stem anatomy revealed that cuticle layer ranged from 0.6 mu m in O. argentata to 1.7 mu m in O. proballanthera. Parenchymatous cells of O. neglecta and O. stenoloba possessed more intense starch than the other species studied. In leaf anatomy, the longest palisade parenchyma was found in O. neglecta, while the smallest was noted in O. argentata. Mesophyll structure of O. argentata, O. sericea and O. rechingeri was equifacial (isobilateral), while O. neglecta, O. proballanthera and O. stenoloba presented bifacial (dorsiventral) structure. Rugose nutlet ornamentation was observed in O. argentata, O. neglecta and O. sericea, whereas reticulate type was found in O. proballanthera, O. rechingeri and O. stenoloba. Onosma stenoloba could easily be distinguished from other species by its aesterotrichous indumentum, and in contrary, other species possessed haplotrichous type of indumentum. Micromorphological features of nutlet surface, anatomical features of epidermal surface (trichomes and stomata), and lamina mesophyll structure (dorsiventral and isobilateral) could be useful in solving taxonomic problem of the genus.

Çakilcioglu, Ugur; Paksoy, Mehmet Y.; Babacan, Ebru Yuce; Polat, Ridvan
The micromorphological and anatomical characteristics of three species of Chrysochamela genus have been comparatively presented by using light microscopy (LM) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The micromorphological studies are related to the epidermal and seed surface. In anatomical studies, cross sections of the stems and leaves were examined and biometric measurement of cell and tissues were made. The stem and leaf anatomy of the genus were described. In addition, the stomatal index rate and stomatal index of these species were calculated. The leaf is dorsiventral in mesophyll-type. Except its C. noeana taxon, stellate trichomas are coincided in other taxon. Stoma can be observed on both sides of the leaf. Whereas stoma index rates of this genus were found in the range of 0.7 - 1.2, stoma types were observed as aniocytic and anomocytic. Seed surface of the genus can be found in reticulate, verrucae or in verrucaerugose types. In conclusion, the presence/absence of trichome over stem and leaves, the presence/absence of collenchyma in middle the vascular region, the seed shape, epidermal cell shape, and the characteristics of anticlinal boundaries and periclinal cell walls were found to be the important characters for identification of the Chrysochamela genus.

Paksoy, Mehmet Yavuz; Polat, Ridvan; Çakilcioglu, Ugur
Kundmannia Scop. is a genus of the Apiaceae (Umbelliferae) family which consists of 463 genera and ca. 3500 species. Kundmannia belongs to the Oenantheae tribe and are well represented in Spain, France, Italy, Turkey, Syria and North Africa where they grow on calcareous or siliceous soils. In this study; fruit micromorphology and the vegetative anatomy of the Kundmannia species growing in Turkey were compratively examined for the first time. The anatomical sections were taken from the stem, ray, leaf and and petiole of the plants for taxonomic deduction. Various tissues of taxa were given comparative micro anatomical measurements according to the anatomical studies, lignified or non-lignified medullary rays in stems, stomata types (diacytic and anomocytic), stomata index ratio (0.58 - 0.7), fruit shape and fruit epidermal surface are considered as important anatomical characters. In the fruit micromorphology, the cells on the mericarp surface have seen as striate and rugulate while the surface between the two ribs in the species have observed rugulate or striate. Fruit micromorphology and vegetative anatomy of the genus Kundmannia has not been studied before. However, the anatomical structure of the genus has been elucidated in this study, for the first time.

This study aims to record accumulation of knowledge on plants which are used as food by local people of Elazig that has a rich culture and a very natural environment. Field study was carried out over a period of approximately two years (2010-2011). During this period, 92 vascular plant specimens were collected. The plants were pressed in the field and prepared for identification. A total of 62 food plants belonging to 28 families were identified in the region. There is no detailed information in the literature with regard to the use of brevipes for human nutrition. It is certained that wild plants being used for nutritional purposes by human beings are also used for medicinal purposes. Highlighting the importance of flora and ethnobotanical inventory studies in terms of the protection and use of plant sources, what is required is the cultivation of endangered plant species, establishment of seedbanks for these plants, recording of their natural habitat as well as conducting studies in order to raise public awareness.

Ethnopharmacological relevance: This paper provides significant ethnobotanical information on medicinal plants in Espiye in the Black Sea Region. Recording such data calls for urgency. This is the first ethnobotanical study in which statistical calculations about plants are carried out by means of FIC method in Northern (Espiye-Giresun) part of Turkey. This study aims to identify the wild plants collected for medicinal purposes by locals of Espiye which is located in the Black Sea Region of Turkey, and to identify the uses and local names of these wild plants. Materials and methods: A field study had been carried out for a period of approximately 2 years (20122014). During this period, information about medicinal use of 55 wild and 15 cultivated plants were collected. Demographic characteristics of participants, names of the local plants, their utilized parts and preparation methods were investigated and recorded. Through face-to-face interviews, we identified and recorded demographic characteristics of the respondents. We interviewed 128 persons who are over the age of 29. The plant taxa were collected within the scope of the study; and herbarium materials were prepared. In addition, the relative significance value of the taxa was determined, and informant consensus factor (FIC) was calculated for the medicinal plants included in the study. Results: We have found out in the literature review of the plants included in our study that 70 plant taxa are already used for medicinal purposes while 3 plants are not available among the records in the literature. The most common families are Asteraceae, Rosaceae, Lamiaceae, Malvaceae, and Ericaceae. We include in our study and report for the first time the medicinal uses of Alchemilla crinita Buser, Stachys sylvatica L., and Thymus leucotrichus Hal. var. leucotrichus Hal. Names of local plants in Turkey vary especially due to vernaculars. The plants that the locals of Espiye use are called with the same or different local names in various parts of Anatolia. Conclusion: We found out that locals living in the research area use for therapeutic purpose 70 plants taxa which belong to 36 families. Turkish citizens with different ethnic backgrounds took the questionnaire. These people use these wild plants in treatment of several diseases. Comparison of the data obtained in this study with the experimental data obtained in the previous laboratory studies on the wild plants which grow in Espiye proved ethnobotanical usages to a great extent. Literature review indicated that the therapeutic plants that grow in Espiye are used in different parts of the world for the treatment of similar diseases. (C) 2015 Elsevier Ireland Ltd.
