Medicinal plants have been used by humans for the treatment of various diseases for thousands of years from past to present. Members of the Lamiaceae family are among the most preferred medicinal plants due to the wide variety of secondary components they contain, particularly essential oils. In this review, Master’s and PhD theses and books based on ethnobotanical studies investigated between 1960 and 2021 as well as internationally recognized databases (PubMed, Scopus, Google Scholar, Web of Science, SciFinder, Springer and Elsevier) were used to determine the medicinal uses of Lamiaceae taxa among the people in Turkey. As a result of the study, it was found that a total of 221 taxa (192 species) belonging to 29 genera, 51 of which are endemic, have medicinal/therapeutic uses. The local names of these taxa, the usage which are used among the people, the diseases in which they are used, and the geographical regions given in the present study. The genera of taxa most commonly used for medicinal purposes by the local people are Salvia (37 taxa), Sideritis (25 taxa), Stachys (22 taxa), Thymus (16 taxa) and Origanum (13 taxa). It was observed that the most frequently used two methods while preparing these plants for use was infusion (61%), and decoction (24%). Studies conducted on National (TURK, BHP), Regional (EU) and International Pharmacopoeias (WHO) and various monographs (AHP, COMISSION E, EMA, ESCOP, PDR) have revealed that there are 29 taxa included in these pharmacopoeias and monographs whose purpose of use are similar to the diseases that local people are trying to treat. Diseases that people use plants for therapeutic purposes are grouped into 12 categories. It was determined that these plants were widely used for therapeutic purposes in gastric disorders as well as otolaryngology and respiratory system diseases. This review briefly discusses whether some taxa commonly used by the local people in the treatment of diseases can be useful in the treatment of the disease in question, in the light of scientific studies.

Antioxidant and Enzyme Inhibitory Properties, and HPLC–MS/MS Profiles of Different Extracts of Arabis carduchorum Boiss.: An Endemic Plant to Turkey

Uba, Abdullahi Ibrahim; Zengin, Gokhan; Montesano, Domenico; Cakilcioglu, Ugur; Selvi, Selami; Ulusan, Musa Denizhan; Caprioli, Giovanni; Sagratini, Gianni; Angeloni, Simone; Jugreet, Sharmeen

In this study, six extracts of Arabis carduchorum prepared from solvents of varying polarity (water, methanol, ethyl acetate, dichloromethane, and n‐hexane) were investigated for their chemical profiles and total phenolic and flavonoid contents (TPC/TFC) using HPLC–MS/MS and spectrophotometric/colorimetric assays, respectively, along with the assessment of their antioxidant and enzyme inhibitory effects. In general, the polar extracts (methanol, water, and infusion) showed higher TPC/TFC than the other extracts (range:13.73–26.62 mg GAE/g; 2.66–52.95 mg RE/g, respectively). The total antioxidant capacity of the polar extracts ranged from 0.90–1.85 mmol TE/g in phosphomolybdenum assay, while the free radical scavenging potential ranged from 4.36–32.13 mg TE/g and 12.58–67.73 mg TE/g in DPPH and ABTS assays, respectively. While the water and infuse extract inhibited only butyrylcholinesterase (2.68 and 2.39 mg GALAE/g, respectively), the other extracts were found to inhibit both acetyl‐ and butyryl‐cholinesterases (0.96–2.73 mg GALAE/g and 1.86–5.11 mg GALAE/g, respectively). On the contrary, all extracts exhibited anti‐tyrosinase (40.24– 59.22 mg KAE/g) and anti‐amylase (0.09–0.63 mmol ACAE/g) activities. Overall, this study highlighted the effect of solvent polarity on the extraction of bioactive compounds and the biological properties of the extracts of A. carduchorum; hence, the results obtained could be used to guide optimum extraction in future studies.

MICROMORPHOLOGICAL AND ANATOMICAL INVESTIGATION ON SIX SPECIES OF ONOSMA L. (BORAGINACEAE) FROM TURKEY

Selvi, Selami; Polat, Ridvan; Babacan, Ebru Yuce; Rahman, M. Oliur; Çakilcioglu, Ugur

Micromorphology and anatomy of six Onosma L. species, viz. O. argentata Hub.Mor., O. neglecta Riedl, O. proballanthera Rech. f, O. rechingeri Riedl, O. sericea Willd. and O. stenoloba Hausskn. ex Riedl from Turky were investigated. Stem anatomy revealed that cuticle layer ranged from 0.6 mu m in O. argentata to 1.7 mu m in O. proballanthera. Parenchymatous cells of O. neglecta and O. stenoloba possessed more intense starch than the other species studied. In leaf anatomy, the longest palisade parenchyma was found in O. neglecta, while the smallest was noted in O. argentata. Mesophyll structure of O. argentata, O. sericea and O. rechingeri was equifacial (isobilateral), while O. neglecta, O. proballanthera and O. stenoloba presented bifacial (dorsiventral) structure. Rugose nutlet ornamentation was observed in O. argentata, O. neglecta and O. sericea, whereas reticulate type was found in O. proballanthera, O. rechingeri and O. stenoloba. Onosma stenoloba could easily be distinguished from other species by its aesterotrichous indumentum, and in contrary, other species possessed haplotrichous type of indumentum. Micromorphological features of nutlet surface, anatomical features of epidermal surface (trichomes and stomata), and lamina mesophyll structure (dorsiventral and isobilateral) could be useful in solving taxonomic problem of the genus.

MICROMORPHOLOGICAL AND ANATOMICAL INVESTIGATIONS ON CONRINGIA HEIST. EX FABR.

Selvi, Selami; Aladi, Hatice Inci; Paksoy, Mehmet Yavuz

The micromorphological and anatomical investigations on 6 taxa of Conringia Heist. ex Fabr. growing in Turkey were carried out. The anatomy of root, stem and leaves was examined in detail. In micromorphological studies stem and leaf surface of species was examined. Mesophyll type of lamina is dorsiventral (Conringia planisiliqua, C. persica, C. austriaca) and equifacial (C. clavata, C.grandiflora, C. orientalis). Stomata situated on both surfaces, are anisocytic and rarely anomocytic types. Crystals of calcium oxalate observed in only one species (C. grandiflora) was found to have cubic type parenchyma cells of the stem and leaf In micromorphological studies the surface of the stem and leaves were found to be glabrous. Epidermal surface of leaves was observed to be covered with waxy cuticular particles. Anticlinal walls of the adaxial cells are undulate and rarely straight and anticlinal walls of abaxial epidermis are undulate and rarely sinuate. Periclinal walls were found to be covered with upper waxy layer which was flat. A diagnostic key based on combined stem, leaf and leaf epidermal characteristics are presented. The leaf mesophyll structures, stem vascular bundles number, lignified or unlignified of sclerenchyma, epidermal surface and absence or presence of crystals were found to be important characters for the identification of Conringia species.

Giresun ilinde yayılış gösteren Hypericum L. (Hypericaceae) cinsinin mikromorfolojik ve anatomik özelliklerinin araştırılması

Cakilcioglu, Ugur; Selvi, Selami; Türkmen, Zafer; Hayta, Şükrü; Polat, Rıdvan

In this study the species Hypericum L. exhibiting distribution in and around Giresun were examined comparatively for micromorphological and anatomic characteristics. In anatomic examinations, cross sections from stems and leaves of the plants were examined and anatomic comparisons were made between the species. In micromorphological studies, epidermal surfaces of the stem and leaf and seed surface were examined. The micromorphological and anatomic characters were presented comparatively in tables. It was determined that the anatomic structure of the stem was almost identical in all species examined although the anatomic structure of the leaf was anatomically different. As a consequence it is seen that the characters such as structure of the stem and leaf, mesophyll type of the leaf, stoma configuration on the leaf surface (amphistomatic or hypostamatic), and canal types (type A, B and C) are the ones which will be used in systematic species discrimination.

Traditional knowledge on wild plants in Uzumlu (Erzincan-Turkey)

Korkmaz, Mustafa; Karakus, Sinem; Selvi, Selami; Çakilcioglu, Ugur

This survey was conducted in Uzumlu district and its surrounding villages in order to determine the useful plants consumed for different ethnobotanical purposes such as animal fodder, ornamental plant, good, fuel, and dye by the local people living in the area between 2010 and 2011 summer vegetation periods. Totally 77 traditional uses of 64 plant taxa were determined at the end of the study. The biggest families with the numbers of taxa were Fabaceae (10), Asteraceae (9), Rosaceae (6), Salicaceae (4) Brassicaceae, Poaceae, and Liliaceae (3). All parts of 42 plants, stems of 11 plants, flowers of 6 plants, branches of 5 plants, seeds of 3 plants, fruits of 3 plants, aerial parts of 2 plants, fruit exocarp of 2 plants, and root of 1 plant were determined to be used for different purposes. In addition, local names and ethnobotanical aspects of totally 17 taxa (26.5 %) were presented firstly in this study. East Anatolia is a very important region of Turkey in terms of plant diversity, and many studies have been conducted on the traditional uses of plants; but, the least have been carried out in Erzincan province. Because of that, this study was conducted in the area.

Ethnopharmacological survey of medicinal plants in Ulukisla (Nigde-Turkey)

Paksoy, Mehmet Yavuz; Selvi, Selami; Sauran, Ahmet

This study aimed to identify wild plants collected for medicinal purposes by the local people of Ulukisla County, located in the Central Anatolia Region of Turkey and to establish the uses and local names of these plants. A field study was carried out over a period of approximately 2 years (2002-2003). During this period, 59 vascular plant specimens were collected. Demographic characteristics of participants, local plant names, plant parts used and preparation methods of the plants were investigated and recorded. Within the scope of the study, the plant species were collected; herbarium materials were prepared; and the plant specimens were named. In addition, the relative importance value of the species was determined and was calculated for the medicinal plants included in the study. A total of 59 medical plants belonging to 27 families were identified in the region. The most common families were Lamiaceae, Rosaceae, Asteraceae, Poaceae and Apiaceae. This study identified not only the wild plants collected for medical purposes by local people of Ulukisla County in the Central Anatolia Region, but also the uses and local names of these plants. Comparison of the data obtained in this study from the plants growing in Ulukisla with the experimental data obtained in previous laboratory studies showed mostly the same ethnobotanical usages. The plant flora of Ulukisla is threatened by such factors as grazing, expansion of new agricultural lands, and unsustainable picking of plants to generate income. Steps should be taken immediately to ensure the inclusion of relevant flora within conservation designations. Published by Elsevier GmbH.

DETERMINING DIFFERENT PLANT LEAVES' FRACTAL DIMENSIONS: A NEW APPROACH TO TAXONOMICAL STUDY OF PLANTS

Bayirli, Mehmet; Selvi, Selami; Cakilcioglu, Ugur

Fractal dimensions of leaves from Cercis canadensis L., Robinia pseudoacacia L., Amelanchier arborea (F. Michx.) Fernald, Prunus persica (L.) Batsch, Quercus alba L., Carpinus caroliniana Walter, Ficus carica L., Morus rubra L., Platanus orientalis L., and Ulmus rubra Muhl. were calculated. The values were then confirmed and compared by those obtained from box-counting method and the exponent values of density-density correlation function (first time in the literature). It is now proposed for the first time that there is a relationship between a fractal dimension of the leaf and a surface density of the image and was concluded that together with other measures, the fractal dimensions with surface density function could be used as a new approach to taxonomical study of plants.
