Ince, Olcay Kaplan; Ince, Muharrem; Yonten, Vahap; Goksu, Ali

This is the first study about removal of lead (Pb(II)) from energy drinks. In this paper, food waste, namely eggshell (hydroxyapatite) utilization, was used to remove Pb(II) from mineral water and energy drinks. Mineral water and energy drinks were chosen for removal of lead since the latter is severely hazardous to human health even in small amounts. Response Surface Methodology (RSM) was performed to optimize the application process by practice of the quadratic model united with the Central Composite Design (CCD) and quadratic combined program was utilized to study the most effective parameters on aforementioned liquids. Through the application of variance analysis (ANOVA) factors critical to removing of lead were identified for each experimental design response. Maximum adsorption capacity of eggshell was achieved as 923 mg g(-1) for Pb(II). The obtained optimum conditions were applied to drinks. Results showed that used adsorbent was quite effective in removing Pb(II) from drinks. (C) 2016 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

This study aims to explore the optimum conditions for P. eryngii var. ferulae in adsorption of sulfamethazine (SM) from synthetic solutions via reduction of chemical oxygen demand (COD). The optimum conditions were optimized using the response surface methodology (RSM) developed by the application of the quadratic model associated with the central composite design. For this aim, RSM was employed to determine the effects of some parameters on this adsorption process by fungal biomass as an effective and available adsorbent. The investigated parameters were initial concentration of sulfamethazine (70–235 mg L−1), solution pH (3–7), adsorbent dosage (0.3–1.5 g), and contact time (5–25 min). The significant factors on each experimental design response were identified from the analysis of variance. The results of RSM analyzes revealed that optimum conditions of initial SM concentration, pH, adsorbent dosage, and contact time for maximum COD removal (82%) were achieved as 400 mg L−1, 11, 1.46 g, and 15.4 min, respectively. The results showed that dead biomass of P. eryngii var. ferulae were an appropriate adsorbent for the removal of COD in the SM medium from synthetic solutions.

Yonten, Vahap; Tanyol, Mehtap; Yildirim, Numan; Yildirim, Nuran Cikcikoglu; Ince, Muharrem

This study investigates preparation of biosorbent Pleurotus eryngii immobilized on Amberlite XAD-4 and the optimal conditions for removal of Remazol Brilliant Blue R (RBBR) reactive dye from synthetic aqueous solutions. The process was optimized using the response surface methodology (RSM) developed by the application of the quadratic model associated with the central composite design. For this purpose, RSM was employed to determine the effects of operational parameters on this material as effective and available adsorbent. The investigated variables were dye initial concentration (10-60 mg L-1), solution pH (2-9), adsorbent dosage (0.1-0.5 g), and temperature (20-45 degrees C). The significant factors on each experimental design response were identified from the analysis of variance (ANOVA). The RSM indicated that optimum conditions of initial dye concentration, pH, adsorbent dosage, and temperature for maximum RBBR removal (98%) were achieved as 36.3 mg L-1, 2.0, 0.304 g, and 38.7 degrees C, respectively. The results showed that this biosorbent was an appropriate adsorbent for the removal of RBBR from aqueous solutions.

Optimization of Cadmium Removal from Water by Hydroxyapatite Using Experimental Design Methodology

Ince, Olcay Kaplan; Ince, Muharrem; Karaaslan, Nagihan M.; Yonten, Vahap

The presence of cadmium in water is a serious threat to the environment. The removal of cadmium using hydroxyapatite as an adsorbent was studied in an aqueous system. Hydroxyapatite was prepared to process the adsorption of cadmium from aqueous solution. Experimental design methodology and response surface methodology (RSM) with a quadratic model associated with central composite design was used to optimize the pH, initial heavy metal concentration, final volume, and adsorbent dosage for the removal of cadmium. Analysis of variance identified significant factors on each parameter. RSM indicated that a pH of 8.5, a sample volume of 166 mL, an adsorbent of dosage 0.57 g, and a contact time of 82 min were optimal for the adsorption of Cd(II). Under these conditions, the removal of Cd(II) was 895 mg g(-1).

Nickel, Lead, and Cadmium Removal Using a Low-Cost Adsorbent - Banana Peel

Ince, Muharrem; Ince, Olcay Kaplan; Yonten, Vahap; Karaaslan, Nagihan M.

Water pollution because of inorganic contaminants is a serious problem due to the acute toxicities and carcinogenic nature of pollutants. Recently, much attention has been focused on using natural and low-cost adsorbents, especially food residues, for removing toxic metal ions. Batch removal of nickel (Ni(II)), lead (Pb(II)), and cadmium (Cd(II)) from aqueous solution using a natural adsorbent is described in this study. Effects of various parameters on adsorption capacities such as pH, adsorbent dose, and stirring time were investigated by batch experiments. The maximum adsorption capacities for Ni(II), Pb(II), and Cd(II) ions were 1.6 mg g(-1), 125 mg g(-1), and 84 mg g(-1), respectively. Characterization of the surface modification was performed with FTIR measurements. FTIR spectra showed that chemisorption takes place at the surface of the adsorbent. The Freundlich and Langmuir adsorption isotherms were used to evaluate the equilibrium data. The characteristic parameters for each isotherm were determined. The Langmuir and Freundlich isotherm provided the best correlation for Ni(II), Cd(II), and Pb(II) using banana peel.

Adsorption of bisphenol A from aqueous solutions by Pleurotus eryngii immobilized on Amberlite XAD-4 using as a new adsorbent

Yonten, Vahap; Ince, Muharrem; Tanyol, Mehtap; Yildirim, Numan

The adsorption of bisphenol A (BPA) in a fixed-bed column was evaluated in this work. Fungus Pleurotus eryngii isolated from Tunceli (Turkey) immobilized on XAD-4 resin was used as an adsorbent for decontamination of BPA from aqueous solutions. The extent of BPA removal capacity was evaluated as a function of parameters such as pH, volume of the sample, and column bed height. Adsorption isotherms of BPA on immobilized P. eryngii were determined and correlated with common isotherm equations such as Langmuir and Freundlich models. The mechanism of adsorption of BPA was analyzed preadsorption (XAD-4+fungus) and postadsorption (XAD-4+fungus+BPA) using fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. The results show that adsorption ability of BPA by immobilized P. eryngii is possible and this system yields the best degree of BPA removal (90%) at pH 11 for an initial load of 120mgL(-1). Therefore, this material can be used as a very effective adsorbent for BPA decontamination in aqueous solutions.

Removal of Phosphate from Aqueous Solutions by Chemical- and Thermal-Modified Bentonite Clay

Tanyol, Mehtap; Yonten, Vahap; Demir, Veysel

The study investigated phosphate adsorption from aqueous solutions using chemical- and thermal-modified bentonite in batch system. The adsorbent was characterized by SEM, BET, and FTIR spectroscopy. Contact time, beginning phosphate concentration, pH of the solution, and the effects of the temperature on phosphate adsorption capacity were determined by a series of experimental studies. In a wide pH range (3-10), high phosphate removal yields were obtained (between 94.23 and 92.26 %), and with the increase in temperature (from 25 to 45 degrees C), phosphate removal increased. Langmuir and Freundlich isotherms were used to determine the sorption equilibrium, and the results demonstrated that equilibriumdata displayed better adjustment to Langmuir isotherm than the Freundlich isotherm. Phosphate sorption capacity, calculated using Langmuir equation, is 20.37 mg g(-1) at 45 degrees C temperature and pH 3. Mass transfer and kinetic models were applied to empirical findings to determine the mechanism of adsorption and the potential steps that control the reaction rate. Both external mass transfer and intra-particle diffusion played a significant role on the adsorption mechanism of phosphate, and adsorption kinetics followed the pseudo-second-order-type kinetic. Furthermore, thermodynamic parameters (Delta H degrees, Delta G degrees, Delta S degrees) which reveal that phosphate adsorption occur spontaneously and in endothermic nature were determined. The results of this study support that bentonite, which is found abundant in nature and modified as an inexpensive and effective adsorbent, could be used for phosphate removal from aqueous solutions.

Adsorption of the 2,4-Dichlorophenoxyacetic Acid Dimethylamine by Raw and Modified Bentonite

Yonten, Vahap; Kubilay, Senol; Battal, Peyami

The adsorption of the 2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid dimethyl amine on raw bentonite (Tokat, Turkey), modified bentonite with base and modified bentonite with acid has been studied using high pressure liquid chromatography (HPLC) and FT- infrared spectrophotometer. Sorption of 2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid dimethyl amine on raw bentonite, modified bentonite with base and modified bentonite with acid was compared solving in different solutions such as aqueous and aqueous-ethanol solutions based on adsorption isotherms. The effect of temperature, time and pH were observed on adsorption of 2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid dimethyl amine. Sorption mechanisms in soils, the effect of surface functional groups as well as parameters influencing adsorption were discussed. Then maximum adsorption of 2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid dimethyl amine capacity was measured on modified bentonite with base in pH 5 at 40 degrees C for 24 h. The modified bentonite with base used in experimental work played a major role than on the adsorption of 2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid dimethyl amine so, the modified bentonite with base has better characteristics than raw bentonite and modified bentonite with acid adsorbents. The Freundlich isotherms of aqueous-ethanol solution was better than isotherms of aqueous solution for much better to adsorb of 2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid dimethyl amine.
