Ortíz-Barrios, Miguel; Celani de Souza, Helder Jose; Petrillo, Antonella; Gul, Muhammet; Yücesan, Melih; Navarro-Jiménez, Eduardo; Alfaro-Saíz, Juan-José; Ariza-Ortíz, Andrés

Purpose – Clinical laboratory performance is critical in managing seasonal respiratory diseases (SRDs); however, prolonged waiting times can lead to patient dissatisfaction and nonquality costs. This challenge is particularly acute for pregnant patients, who face increased health risks from diagnostic delays. This study aims to improve waiting times before sample collection in clinical laboratories serving pregnant patients with SRDs by integrating Lean Six Sigma (LSS) and Discrete-Event Simulation (DES). Design/methodology/approach – The proposed framework was validated in a public clinical laboratory using the DMAIC (Define–Measure–Analyze–Improve–Control) methodology. DES was embedded within the Analyze and Improve phases to model patient flow and assess improvement scenarios before implementation. Findings – The integrated LSS–DES approach resulted in a significant reduction in waiting times. During SRD peak periods, waiting time before sample collection for pregnant patients decreased from 1.01 to 0.10 h per patient. These results demonstrate the framework's effectiveness and practical usefulness for decision-makers seeking performance improvements in resource-constrained healthcare environments. Originality/value – This study enhances existing literature by integrating LSS and DES to address laboratory performance challenges associated with SRDs. The combined LSS-DES used for pregnant patients during outbreak periods is novel. The study offers contextual innovation for a vulnerable population, methodological advancement through embedding DES within the DMAIC cycle, and practical laboratory validation. The framework is particularly valuable for low- and middle-income countries (LMICs), where scalable solutions are essential.

Multivariable assessment of ınfill strategies for enhanced mechanical properties in 3D-printed curved beams

    Arıkan, Volkan; Dogan, Akar

Purpose – This study specifically focuses on low-to-medium infill densities where the influence of internal geometry on structural performance becomes most dominant. This study aims to explore how different infill patterns and densities affect the mechanical response of curved-axis beams produced by fused filament fabrication-based additive manufacturing (AM), providing insights for optimizing lightweight and material-efficient components subjected to bending loads. Design/methodology/approach – Twenty-seven PLA-based specimens with varying curvature radii (500, 750 and 1000 mm), infill patterns (grid, triangular and trihexagonal) and densities (20%, 30% and 40%) were manufactured. Each was subjected to three-point bending tests following ASTM standards. The experimental approach focused on analyzing force-displacement behavior to evaluate stiffness, load capacity and deformation characteristics under static loading conditions. Findings – Increasing infill density enhanced the maximum force capacity of curved beams but reduced their displacement tolerance, reflecting greater rigidity. The trihexagonal (TH) pattern exhibited the highest displacement values, confirming its energy absorption capability, while the triangular (TA) pattern provided the greatest rigidity with lower deformation. The grid (GR) pattern showed intermediate behavior, with displacement capacity strongly influenced by curvature radius. Straighter beams generally displayed reduced displacement and higher stability, while more curved beams exhibited greater deformation. These results highlight the critical role of infill geometry and curvature in balancing strength, stiffness and energy absorption in three-dimensional (3D)-printed curved beams. Originality/value – Unlike prior studies that focus on high or near-solid infill levels, this work uniquely highlights the mechanical response of additively manufactured curved beams within the low-to-medium infill density range, where infill geometry plays a critical role. The study presents the first detailed comparison of how infill strategies interact with curvature in 3D-printed beams. It delivers practical design guidance for engineers working with curved structures in mechanical, aerospace and civil applications. Its novelty lies in demonstrating how trihexagonal patterns can optimize performance across various geometries, supporting enhanced structural resilience in AM.

AI-enabled human capital management (HCM) software adoption using full consistency method (FUCOM): evidence from banking industry

Yadav, Rama Shankar; Kaya, Sema Kayapinar; Pant, Abhay; Tiwari, Anurag

Purpose: Artificial intelligence (AI)-based human capital management (HCM) software solutions represent a potentially effective way to leverage and streamline a bank’s human resources. However, despite the attractiveness of AI-based HCM solutions to improve banks’ effectiveness, to the best of the authors’ knowledge, there are no current studies that identify critical success factors (CSFs) for adopting AI-based HCM in the banking sector. This study aims to fill this gap by investigating CSFs for adopting AI-based HCM software solutions in the banking sector. Design/methodology/approach: Full consistency method methodology and technology–organization–environment, economic and human framework are used for categorizing and ranking CSFs. Findings: The study identifies the technological and environmental dimensions as the most and least important dimensions for AI-based HCM adoption in banks. Among specific CSFs, compatible technology facilities, sufficient privacy and security and relative advantages of technology over competing technologies were identified as the most important. Implementation of AI-based HCM solutions requires significant outlays of resources, both human and financial, for banks. Originality/value: The study provides bank administrators a set of objective parameters and criterion to evaluate the feasibility of adopting a particular AI-based HCM solution in banks.

Leading and lagging role between financial stress and crude oil

    Gençyürek, Ahmet Galip

Purpose: The crude oil market plays a key role in addressing the issue of energy economics. This paper aims to detect the causality relationship between the crude oil market and economy based on the financial system. Design/methodology/approach: This paper used the static and dynamic Hatemi-J Bootstrap Toda–Yamamoto and Diebold–Yilmaz connectedness index. The Hatemi-J Bootstrap Toda-Yamamoto approach allows researchers to use nonstationary data and that method is robust to nonnormal distribution and heteroscedasticity. The Diebold–Yilmaz connectedness index model provides researchers to detect the power of connectedness besides linkage direction. The analyzed period is the span from January 3, 2005 to October 3, 2022. Findings: The results show bidirectional causality in the full sample but unidirectional causality before and after the 2008 financial crisis. During the 2008 financial crisis period and the COVID-19 period, there was a bidirectional and unidirectional causality, respectively. The connectedness approach indicates that the crude oil market affects financial stress through investors’ risk preferences. Research limitations/implications: The Diebold–Yilmaz spillover index model is based on vector autoregression methods with a stationarity precondition. However, some of the five dimensions that constitute the financial stress index (FSI) are nonstationary in level. Therefore, the authors takes the first difference of the nonstationary data. Practical implications: The linkage between the crude oil market and the FSI provides useful information for investors and policymakers. For instance, this paper indicates that an investor wanted to forecast future value of the crude oil (financial stress) should consider the current and past values of financial stress (crude oil). Moreover, policymaker should consider the crude oil market (FSI) to make a policy proposal for financial system (crude oil market). Originality/value: Recently, indicators of economic activity levels (economic policy uncertainty, implied volatility index) have begun to be considered to analyze the relationship between energy and the economy but very little is known in the literature about the leading and lagging roles of data in subsample periods and the linkage channel. The other originality of this research is using the new econometric approaches.

Houari, Amin; Kouider, Madani; Polat, Alper; Amroune, Salah; Mohamad, Barhm Abdullah; Chellil, Ahmed; Campilho, Raul

Purpose: The purpose of this research is to evaluate the effectiveness of different repair patch materials in reducing the stresses at the crack tip of a 2024-T3 aluminum plate. This involves a numerical analysis using the finite element method (FEM) to estimate the reduction in the J-integral value, with the goal of identifying how various parameters related to the patch materials, adhesive properties and loading conditions influence the structural integrity of the repaired plate. Design/methodology/approach: The methodology of this research involves conducting a numerical analysis using the FEM to estimate the reduction in the J-integral value at the crack tip of a 2024-T3 aluminum plate. Three types of patches – metal, composite and functionally graded material (FGM) – were examined under tensile loading conditions, and Adekit-A140 adhesive was used to bond these repair patches to the aluminum plate. Findings: The analysis considered various parameters, including crack length, the nature of fibers in the composite material, the gradation exponent for FGM patches and the nature of the face in contact with the adhesive for the FGM patch. Additionally, stress analysis was conducted, examining the J-integral values for the plate, shear stress in the adhesive layer and peel stress in the composite patch. The findings highlight that modifying the nature of the repair patch used can significantly enhance the structural integrity of the repaired plate. Originality/value: The study analyzed J-integral values, shear stress in the adhesive and peel stress in the composite patch. Various parameters, including crack length, fiber type, gradation exponent and adhesive contact face nature, were considered. Results demonstrate that the J-integral value can be significantly reduced by altering the repair patch type, highlighting the effectiveness of customized patch materials in enhancing structural integrity.

Analysis of turbulent wall jet impingement onto a moving heated body

Coşanay, Hakan; Öztop, Hakan F.; Gür, Muhammed; Bakır, Eda

Purpose: The purpose of this study is to make a numerical analysis of a wall jet with a moving wall attached with a heated body. The hot body is cooled via impinging wall jet. Thus, a jet cooling problem is modeled. The Reynolds number is taken in three different values between 5 × 103 ≤ Re ≤ 15 × 103. The h/H ratio for each value of the Re number was taken as 0.02, 0.04 and 0.0, respectively. Design/methodology/approach: Two-dimensional impinged wall jet problem onto a moving body on a conveyor is numerically studied. The heated body is inserted onto an adiabatic moving wall, and it moves in +x direction with the wall. Governing equations for turbulent flow are solved by using the finite element method via analysis and system Fluent R2020. A dynamic mesh was produced to simulate the moving hot body. Findings: The obtained results showed that the heat transfer (HT) is decreased with distance between the jet outlet and the jet inlet. The best HT occurred for the parameters of h/H = 0.02 and Re = 15 × 103. Also, HT can be controlled by changing the h/H ratio as a passive method. Originality/value: Originality of this work is to make an analysis of turbulent flow and heat transfer for wall jet impinging onto a moving heated body.
