THE “OTHER” KARAGÖZ: The Kurdish Qeregoz

    Çelik, Duygu

The traditional Ottoman shadow play Karagöz and Hacivat was broadcast in Kurdish on a Turkish state channel broadcasting in 2012. In this chapter, the author poses the question: are these Kurdish scenarios mere translations of the Turkish form, or did Qeregoz develop into a localized form of its own? Ultimately, the author contends that these plays in Kurdish represent a new staging style of the iconic form, and furthermore, the generous depiction of Kurdish life in Qeregoz on television had the effect of troubling a monolithic sense of “Turkishness.”

Kilam as theatre music in Kurdish theatre in Turkey

    Çelik, Duygu

This chapter focuses on the use of "kilams" in Kurdish theatre as theatre music. Kilams are the narratives, expressions, and structures of dengbêjî's, which are traditional one-person oral performances of the Kurds. çelik will look at the dramaturgical contributions of the kilams used in the plays she has selected. She will combine methods of performance analysis with the evaluation of play texts, play recordings, field diary entries and notes, as well as (non-standardised) interviews. In this way, the author aims to understand the concept of "theatre music" via an ethnodramaturgical performance analysis. The concept of ethnodramaturgy refers to the analysis of the political/artistic/anthropological identity that people/society creates via performing arts. The main goal of the proposed notion of ethnodramaturgy is to make the theatre of "the other" visible and analyse the ethnocentric monocultural structure in the field of theatre by deconstructing it. Here, the focus will be on Kurdish theatre and dengbêjî. For this purpose, three Kurdish plays in which kilams were used as theatre music will be discussed and their respective functions on stage analysed.

Travelling Theory and Women’s Movements in Turkey: Imagining Europe

    Gulcicek, Demet

Drawing on archival research, Travelling Theory and Women’s Movements in Turkey examines the imagination of Europe in the context of women’s rights movements in a self-defined non-European setting. It brings travelling theory, poststructuralist feminist theories and orientalist studies together to provide an original theoretical framework for understanding the complex and often contradictory imaginations of Europe. Such imaginations can be an object of desire, fantasy, hate and hostility in a non-European context. This volume sheds light on the manner in which local power dynamics are reproduced, negotiated and subverted during the travel of women’s and feminist movements. With a focus on the late Ottoman Empire, the book questions how ‘Other’ positions can be inhabited by the ‘Self’ and unpacks sexual and normative dimensions of demanding women’s rights in this context. As such, it will appeal to scholars of sociology, cultural studies and gender studies with interests in feminist theory and notions of European and non-European categories.
