Enhancing the potential of employing thermosetting powder recyclates as filler in LLDPE by structural modifications

    Kismet, Yilmaz; Wagner, Manfred H.

Potential of using powder coating recyclates as filler material for polyethylene compounds was investigated. Due to their strong adhesion to the metal surface during compounding at extrusion temperatures higher than 100 degrees C, the coating powder recyclates were chemically modified to facilitate its processing by extrusion and injection molding at higher temperatures. For this purpose, the coating powder recyclates were first hydrolyzed with addition of an alcohol as swelling agent. The deactivated recyclates were mixed at different ratios with the matrix polymer, a linear low-density polyethylene (LLDPE). The mixtures obtained were then compounded by extrusion and subsequently injection molded to plates to produce specimens for testing. The resulting samples were characterized mechanically by tensile, bending, and impact strength tests. In summary, the powder coatings recyclates can be processed as filler for thermoplastic material, without any adhesion problems up to 160 degrees C and 180 degrees C in the extruder and in the injection molding machine, respectively.

EFFECT OF DIETARY FISH OIL REPLACEMENT WITH PLANT OILS ON GROWTH PERFORMANCE AND GENE EXPRESSION IN JUVENILE RAINBOW TROUT (ONCORHYNCHUS MYKISS)

Kutluyer, Filiz; Sirkecioglu, Ahmet Necdet; Aksakal, Ercument; Aksakal, Feyza Icoglu; Tunç, Abdullah; Günaydin, Esra

An eight-week feeding trial was conducted to evaluate the effects of total (100%) replacement of dietary fish oil with alternative lipid sources in juvenile rainbow trout. Six iso-nitrogenous and iso-lipidic experimental diets were formulated: CO (14%) -cod liver oil; SSO (14%) -safflower seed oil; SBO (14%) -soybean oil; LO (14%) -linseed oil; SBO (7%) + LO (7%) -a blend of soybean oil and linseed oil; and SSO (7%) + LO (7%) -a blend of safflower seed oil and linseed oil. Growth performance [specific growth rate (SGR), weight gain (WG), food conversion ratio (FCR) and survival rate (SR)], growth hormones [growth hormone (GH-I), insulin-like growth factor-I (IGF-I) and insulin-like growth factor-II (IGF-II)], immune transforming growth factor-beta (TGF-beta) and antioxidant [superoxide dismutase (SOD), glutathione peroxidase (GPx), glutathione reductase (GR), catalase (CAT) and glutathione S-transferase (GST)] response, and heat shock protein 70 (HSP70) mRNA levels were determined in muscle and liver. Our data indicated that final weight, weight gain, FCR and SGR showed significant difference among the six dietary treatments (P<0.05) while there were no significant differences in survival rate between the rainbow trout from supplement fed groups and control group. HSP70 mRNA level expression in muscle was higher in fish fed SSO (P<0.05) while highest level in liver was obtained from fish fed SBO compared to the other treatments (P<0.05). There were no significant differences among treatments for TGF-beta mRNA expression level in muscle and liver. In conclusion, growth performance and expression levels of growth hormones, antioxidants, HSP70, except TGF-beta were affected by five separate lipid sources. In addition, LO positively increased growth performance of juvenile rainbow trout by means of preventing oxidative stress and HSP70 and, enhanced expression of growth hormone related gene.

Investigation of Some Antioxidant Enzymes Activities Depending on Adrenomedullin Treatment and Cold Stress in Rat Liver Tissue

Yildirim, Nuran Cikcikoglu; Yürekli, Muhittin; Yildirim, Numan

Purpose: The aim of this study is to investigate the compensating effects of adrenomedullin on liver tissue after cold stress treatment. Materials and Methods: Male Wistar rats were divided into four groups as control, adrenomedullin, cold stress and cold stress + adrenomedullin treated. Adrenomedullin was given by intraperitoneal injection (2 mg/g body weight) once a day for a week. For cold stress the rats were kept at 10 C for a week. Catalase, glutathione peroxidase and superoxide dismutase activities were measured in liver tissue. Results: Catalase activity was decreased significantly as compared to control in adrenomedullin treated group (p<0.05). There was no significant difference in superoxide dismutase activity (p>0.05). Glutathione peroxidase activity was increased in adrenomedullin treated group but this was statistically insignificant (p>0.05). All enzyme activities were decreased by cold stress (p<0.05). In Adrenomedullin+cold stress group, only the glutathione peroxidase activity was significantly decreased (p<0.05). Conclusion: It is concluded that cold stress induces decrease in catalase, superoxide dismutase and glutathione peroxidase activities in rat liver. Adrenomedullin treatment corrected only glutathione peroxidase activity while decreasing catalase and superoxide dismutase activities further. The discrepancy may be explained by different responses of antioxidant systems to oxidative stress. It can be concluded that oxidative factors may display unexpected effects on the regulation of glutathione peroxidase activities in the adrenonmedullin case.
