The efficacy of Bay leaf (Laurus nobilis) essential oil (LnEO) as a herbal anesthetic agent was evaluated with 2-Phenoxyethanol (2-PE) in Blue Dolphin Cichlid, Cyrtocara moorii. Fish were exposed to different anesthetic concentrations and the lowest effective concentrations (LECs) were determined according to deep anesthesia (AD<3 min) and full recovery (RF<5 min) times. LnEO showed anesthetic properties, and all applied concentrations of both agents induced AD in C. moorii. The LECs of LnEO and 2-PE for C. moorii were determined as 800 µl L-1 (AD; RF → 183 ± 6.3 s; 191 ± 2.6 s) and 600 µl L-1 (AD; RF → 171 ± 3.2 s; 239 ± 4.9 s), respectively. Significant differences were found between anesthetic agents in terms of deep anesthesia and full recovery times for the same concentrations (p<0.05). Induction and recovery times decreased with increasing in LnEO concentrations. On the other hand, anesthesia times were decreased with increasing of 2-PE concentrations, while recovery times increased. Induction and recovery times for LnEO were significantly dependent on concentrations and positive relationships were recorded between AD and RF, whereas the relationship was negative in 2-PE. Bay leaf essential oil has not been used as an anesthetic agent in fish until now. Our results showed that LnEO was an effective anesthetic agent with some minor side effects on C. moorii.

- MakaleYalnız künye2020Scopus SJRQ3The anesthetic effects of 2-phenoxyethanol on Munzur trout fingerlings (Salmo munzuricus Turan et al., 2017) at different temperatures
Akgul, E.; Can, E.
In this study, the anesthetic effects of 2-phenoxyethanol (2-PE, with %99 purity, BASF, Germany) on Munzur trout (Salmo munzuricus., a native species) originated from Munzur stream have been studied. 300 fish with the average weight of 4.42±0.62 g and length of 8.10±0.60 cm were used. To determine the anesthetic effects of various concentrations of 2-PE on Munzur trout fingerlings, the experiments were performed in two different temperatures (13 ºC and 18ºC) and five different concentrations (0.1, 0.2, 0.3, 0.4 and 0.5 ml L-1). 2-PE was used in this study as an anesthetic agent. In the anesthetic processing we practiced in all concentrations, except for 0.1 ml L-1 of 2-PE, loss of reflex (S5) was determined between 68 sec and 276 sec, and total behavioral recovery (R3) was determined between 58 sec and 208 sec. Induction times of anesthesia varied with anesthetic concentrations, decreasing with the increases of 2-PE concentrations. On the other hand, recovery times increased with decreasing of anesthetic concentrations. The lowest effective dose was determined as 0.3 ml L-1 at the temperatures 13 ºC and 18ºC. In this study, first time optimum anesthetic doses of 2-PE were determined for fingerling specimens of Salmo munzuricus which is endemic to Munzur stream and has an importance for aquaculture.

- MakaleYalnız künye2018Scopus SJRQ1Evaluation of anesthetic potential of rosewood (Aniba rosaeodora) oil as a new anesthetic agent for goldfish (Carassius auratus)
Kizak, Volkan; Can, Erkan; Danabaş, Durali; Can, Şafak Seyhaneyildiz
The aim of this research was to investigate the efficacy of rosewood (Aniba rosaeodora) essential oil (EO) as a new herbal anesthetic compared with camphor (Cinnamomum camphora) EO and commonly used chemical agent 2-phenoxyethanol (2-PE) on goldfish (Carassius auratus). The anesthetic efficacies of these herbal EOs and 2-PE were evaluated in goldfish with mean body weight of 7.36 ± 0.77 g. Fish were exposed to each anesthetic concentrations and the lowest effective concentrations (LECs) were established according to deep anesthesia (AD < 3 min) and full recovery (RF < 5 min) times. RD and CP showed anesthetic characteristics and induced AD. The LECs for each anesthetic were established at 250 μl L−1 for RD (AD; RF → 171 ± 2.28 s; 297 ± 7.69 s), 250 μl L−1 for CP (AD; RF → 129 ± 4.18 s; 291 ± 2.81 s) and 700 μl L−1 for 2-PE (AD; RF → 177 ± 2.35 s; 214 ± 4.93 s). At concentrations of 50, 100, 150, 200 μl L−1 for RD, 50, 100, 150 μl L−1 for CP and 400, 500 μl L−1 for 2-PE failed to induce AD in goldfish. There were significantly differences found among RD, CP and 2-PE concentrations in terms of induction and recovery times (p < 0.05). The fastest AD and RF were obtained by 300 μl L−1 CP (120 ± 1.94 s) and 600 μl L−1 2-PE (190 ± 4.34 s), respectively. Fish exposed to 300 μl L−1 RD and 800 μl L−1 2-PE took slightly longer to achieve AD than 300 μl L−1 CP. Induction and recovery times for EOs and 2-PE were significantly dependent on concentrations. Negative relationships was recorded between AD and RF for all anesthetics. No mortality or adverse effects occurred and fish stayed calm during trials. Results showed that RD was found to be an effective anesthetic as well as CP for goldfish and can be used at least 3-fold lower concentrations than 2-PE. In conclusion, rosewood (Aniba rosaeodora) EO, as a new potential anesthetic for fish, proved to be an effective natural agent resulting in rapid induction and recovery.

- MakaleAçık Erişim2018Scopus SJRQ3Anesthetic efficiency of 2-phenoxyethanol on broodstock of salmo munzuricus, a new trout species originating from munzur stream; [Munzur akarsuyu orijinli yeni bir alabalık türü olan salmo munzuricus’un anaç bireyleri üzerinde 2-fenoksietanol’ün anestezik etkinliği]
Can, Erkan; Başusta, Asiye; Karataş, Bilal
Salmo munzuricus is a newly-named species of trout that spreads through rivers flowing along the Munzur Valley National Park. The efficacy of anaesthetic 2-phenoxyethanol was evaluated in indigenous brown trout in the present study. Fish were divided into three weight classes: 100-200 g (W1), 200-400 g (W2) and 400-600 g (W3) and they were exposed to four concentrations of anaesthetic (0.2, 0.3, 0.4 and 0.5 mL L-1). The lowest induction time was identified in the group W3 while the highest one was in the group W1. The lowest recovery time occurred after 73.2±3.83 sec in the group W3 and the highest one was 136±31.46 sec in the group W1. The recovery times were increased with increasing the concentration of 2-phenoxyethanol in the group W1. However, recovery times in the groups W2 and W3 were significantly longer than observed in W1, generally. Besides, it was indicated that fish size affected induction times and recovery times. As a result of the present study, the most appropriate concentrations were determined as 0.4 mL L-1 at weights of 100-400 g while 0.5 mL L-1 at weights of 400-600 g for 2-phenoxyethanol in Salmo munzuricus broodstock.
